Top 10 bargain travel destinations for fall

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

Fall is shoulder season, the period between summer and holiday season known for low cost travel and fewer crowds at many vacation hot spots. This year, the Orbitz Insider Index reviewed average hotel costs in 10 popular shoulder season destinations, identifying which give travelers the most value this fall.

Dublin and Bermuda top the list, offering the highest year-over-year percentage savings. But, thrifty travels should set their sights on a fall vacation to Las Vegas, San Juan, and once again, Dublin, all of which offer average hotel rates under $100 per night. (more…)

Las Vegas Hard Rock Hotel Rocks Anew

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009

By E.C. Gladstone

Perhaps more than any of the other Las Vegas Hotels, everything about the Hard Rock is focused on attracting the young and gorgeous. That isn’t the type of property where “aging gracefully” is an option, especially since (slow economy or not) many others would love to snag their hot and happening clientele. So their new expansions- Paradise Tower up and running, HRH tower coming first quarter 2010 — almost seem overdue.

In fact, the new towers are actually the capping numbers on an album of hits the HRH has been playing ever since the luxury-leaning Morgans Group took over in 2006.

They built a big 3,000-ish capacity new (Rogue) joint for big shows, while opening Carey Hart’s intimate rock bar Wasted Space; they put sexy go-go dancers right on the casino floor and added a smart-designed Poker Room that gets good marks from novices and pro players alike; they got designer Mark Zeff to test out the new tower’s aesthetic with some gothic suites in the original building, and added 65,000 more square feet of meeting space; they replaced aging AJ’s Steakhouse with the new hip Rare 120, while bringing James Beard Foundation-awarded Italian chef Marco Porceddu in to revive Ago (Nobu remains intact); They even added new retail, including a sprawling John Varvatos boutique.

Las Vegas hotels set the mood for Valentine’s Day

Monday, February 9th, 2009

Bellagio_chocolates By E.C. Gladstone

Some people scoff at the notion that the festive and frenzied Vegas Strip can be romantic, but perhaps they need to stop and smell the roses — literally. Valentine’s Day visitors to Las Vegas hotels can celebrate their special someone in so many ways — sultry, secluded, sentimental or sassy. Let me offer just a few suggestions.

A Romantic Meal

Fine dining is everywhere in Vegas — but some restaurants are better situatated for a cozy tete-a-tete than others. Guy Savoy (Caesars Palace) and The Mansion by Joel Robuchon (MGM Grand) would certainly be first choices if you want your darling to know money isn’t an object. Other romantic rooms include the breathtaking Alex (enter from South valet), Bartolotta and Daniel Boulud at Wynn, Aureole and Fleur de Lys at Mandalay Bay; Prime, Olives and Le Cirque at Bellagio, Valentino or B&B Ristorante at The Venetian, Michael Mina’s recently revamped Nobhill Tavern (also MGM — request a secluded booth), the newly redecorated Andre’s (Monte Carlo), DJT at Trump, Hank’s (Green Valley Ranch), The Range (Harrah’s) and downtown, Vic & Anthony’s Steakhouse (Golden Nugget). Many of the above even have secluded wine cellar tables…

A View To A Thrill

If seeing the stars and the Strip are in order, there are many fine view options, starting of course with the Stratosphere’s Top of The World restaurant and including The Capital Grille (Fashion Show Mall), Eiffel Tower Restaurant (Paris),Voodoo (Rio), Nove and Alize at Palms. The newly remodeled Binion’s Ranch Steakhouse downtown is said to have a cool view, too. Don’t forget to request (i.e. demand) a window seat with your reservation.

Something Sweet?

Nearly every restaurant is guaranteed to have some amazing chocolate desserts on offer — but if chocolate fondue is your particular quest, may I point you in the direction of some cool varieties at Cathouse (Luxor), Dos Caminos (Palazzo), Koi (Planet Hollywood), or, on a more casual level, Ethel’s Chocolate Lounge in the Fashion Show Mall? For fine chocolates, almost every major resort has good choices, but I’d start at Jean-Phillippe (Bellagio), Payard (Caesars Palace), Vosges (Forum Shops) or Ethel’s.

Show MeLas-Vegas-nightclub

Should a show be in your sights, my first “date” choices among the regular shows on the Strip would be Cirque Du Soleil’s aquatic-exotic "O" (Bellagio),the dramatically dark Phantom (Venetian) or tastefully seductive Crazy Horse of Paris topless revue (MGM Grand)… Among the performers in town for the weekend, my personal picks would be either Chris Isaak or the Valentine’s Love Affair (soul veterans including Zapp, Rose Royce, Jojo from Mary Jane Girls, Temprees, Honeycone, William DeVaughn), both coincidently at the Orleans hotel… And if a bottle of bubb in the club is more the mode, take yourselves to XS (Encore), Blush (Wynn), Tabu (MGM) or Cathouse. On short notice, check out one of the Top 10 Las Vegas lounges I recently blogged about, particularly Fontana (Bellagio), Parasol (Wynn), Koi and Striphouse (both Planet Hollywood), West Wing (MGM), or Japonais (Mirage).

 Las-Vegas-spaAh, There’s The Rub

Hopefully, your celebration is lasting longer than the evening. If so, one of the best activities I can recommend (in a “family” blog, anyway) is sharing a couples spa treatment. You’ll be seeing a complete review of Vegas spas here soon… but in the meantime, some with great couples treatment packages include the spas at Encore, Trump, MGM Grand and Ritz-Carlton. The Four Seasons, THEHotel, Bellagio, Red Rock, JW Marriott and Venetian are other properties with highly regarded spas.

Get A Room

Maybe this should be the first piece of advice, not the (next to) last, but I hate to assume… Anyway, if I can persuade you lovers to indulge in a one-bedroom suite, my strongest suggestions would include those at Red Rock, Palms Place, Planet Hollywood (Bellagio fountain views!) and Golden Nugget (Spa tower).

Insider Tip: Elton John just announced his Red Piano show at Caesars Palace will close April 22, so don’t miss a chance to see it. And splurge for good seats, it’s worth it.

Las Vegas hosts more hot Halloween events

Wednesday, October 29th, 2008

Lasvegasstriplvcva
By E.C. Gladstone

As I suspected, despite our hard times, Las Vegas has come up with even more ways to celebrate Howl-O-Ween this year. So many, that for those of you coming in to town for this fright-filled weekend, I thought I had probably warn you: sleep now, while you can!

I mentioned the Beaux Arts Ball on Thursday 10/30 at Studio 54 already, but now can tell you that it will not only feature America’s Best Dance Crew (MTV) Super Cr3w, but also perfomers from American Superstars, Chippendales, Crazy Horse Paris, Fantasy, Folies Bergere, Jubilee, Le Reve, O, the Rio’s Show In The Sky and Zumanity. Wow! Also that night, Tryst (Wynn) will have a comic-book heroes & villains party, and Hawaiian Tropic Zone (Planet Hollywood) will be giving away a free “Booob Job” to the winner of its tricks-or-treats contest.

On Halloween (Friday 10/31), Korn’s Jonathan Davis performs at LAX (Luxor), while coincidentally, his former band mate Rob Patterson performs down the strip at ROK Vegas (New York New York), where Carmen Elektra — his fiancée — hosts. … Wilmer Valderrama (remember him from when he actually acted and didn’t just party?) hosts a Veuve Cliquot "Yelloween" At PURE (Caesars Palace)…the cast of Phantom hosts a masquerade ball at Lavo (Palazzo). …  Randy Gerber’s sexy Cherry club (Red Rock resort) hosts a Halloween Fun House with costume prizes and — more importantly — $100 bottle service (if you don’t know what a deal that is — trust me). … And if Tera Patrick isn’t your taste in adult entertainers, Jesse Jane hosts TheDirty.com’s party at Prive (Planet Hollywood)

Also that spook-tacular evening, Criss Angel performs the official opening night of his long-awaited Cirque du Soleil show Believe, If you’re lucky enough to be among the invited, well, boo-ray for you!

Last but ab-so-lutely not least, DJ Paul Oakenfold returns to his amazing Perfecto residency at Rain (Palms resort) Saturday night 11./1. Only a few weeks in, and this multimedia, multi-performance extravaganza has established itself as the only party that matters.

Of course, check my previous blog post for many more Vegas Halloween tips. Have a frighteningly good time this weekend!

Insider tip: Also over the weekend, Amy Smart hosts a "Get Out The Vote" party Saturday and Nelly celebrates his birthday, both at the Palazzo resort’s Lavo (the club too intimate for the celebs to hide)

Scares on the Strip: Hot Halloween events in Las Vegas

Halloween events in Las Vegas
By E.C. Gladstone

Are you obsessed with Halloween? Well then, get yourself to Las Vegas. Because in a town that loves to dress up, Halloween is arguably the biggest holiday of the year, and we have so many events — lasting throughout October and into November — that I can’t even possibly list them all here. But I’ve got some highlights, at the Las Vegas hotels and beyond:

Dressing for excess

Love Jones, the Hard Rock Hotel’s great little lingerie store, is featuring a special Halloween collection. For other sexy costumes, check Déjà Vu boutique, 4335 Tropicana across from the Orleans Hotel & Casino.

Haunted houses

Fright Dome at Circus Circus‘  Adventuredome is a well-established month-long attraction scary enough that they strongly discourage kids under 12. Five haunted houses and performances as well as rides of course … Down the south end of the Strip, Monster Mayhem Haunted Village has appeared at Town Square mall, offering three haunted houses along with arcade games and carnival fun (not to mention Town Square’s popular locals bars Blue Martini and Yard House and many restaurants nearby). … Out in Red Rock Canyon, the Bonnie Springs ghost town has become "Bonnie Screams" through 11/2. … There are several more around town, and even the Las Vegas Springs Preserve has an outdoor "fright zone."

Cheap thrills

Mandalay Beach, which features free movies Friday nights on a floating screen, will be showing the original Saw on Halloween. … Kids under 12 get in free to "Haunted Reef" at Shark Reef Aquarium (also at Mandalay Bay) on Halloween.

Nightclubs and bacchanals

A solid week of crazy Halloween parties starts Saturday, October 25, with the legendary annual Fetish & Fantasy Halloween Ball which is definitely not for the prudish! On Sunday, October 26, the Palms resort’s week of events starts with a sexy (Spearmint Rhino girls) costume party at Playboy Club, continuing Tuesday (October 28) with Girls Next Door’s Holly Madison and Bridget Marquardt hosting DJ J’Roc’s "Trick ‘Em and Treat ‘Em" at Moon. … Also Tuesday, MGM Grand , Studio 54’s annual "Nightmare On 54th Street" week of parties starts with a very cool dance tribute to Michael Jackson’s Thriller (free drinks for ladies dressed for the ’80s); becomes the 42nd annual Beaux Arts Ball on Thursday (October 30), and even stretches into an after-hours party the morning of November 1. … Other nightclub and lounge promotions going on up and down the Strip include a spiked cider party Tuesday at Buse in Four Seasons and Mingle and Mayhem on Thursday at Blush, Wynn.

And on Halloween itself (10/31), Harrah’s outdoor Carnaval Court will have a Ghouls Gone Wild party from noon onward. … SushiSamba is doing a very cool Spooky Kabuki event, with a Japanese-inspired costume contest, Japanese candy, a very cool Dracula dessert and special cocktail (guaranteed coolness). … Adult film star Tera Patrick will be hosting (and Djing!) Tao Nightclub’s Taolloween (guaranteed hotness!). … Other celebrity hosts include Tila Tequila at Christian Audigier (T.I.) and Wilmer Valderrama at Pure (Caesars Palace). … Over at Palms resort, all four clubs (Moon, Rain, Playboy, Ghostbar) are hosting big prize-winning costume contests ($$$), so you can expect a crazy parade there! And just when you thought the freaks might go back to the underworld.

Insider tip: Halloween is just the start of a crazy Vegas weekend. Saturday, November 1, Fabulous Fest brings an incredible all-night array of top DJ talent to the Orleans Arena including Armin Van Buuren, Deadmau5, MSTRKRFT and a lot more.

Las Vegas is for car lovers

Friday, October 10th, 2008

Barrettjackson
By E.C. Gladstone

Even while gas prices threaten change our attitudes, Americans continue to love our cars, and nowhere is that love evident more than here in Las Vegas.

This October 15-18 — for the first time in Vegas — the Barrett-Jackson collector car auction is taking place at Mandalay Bay, offering for display and sale an incredible array of rare vehicles. Check out Carroll Shelby’s first race car, a ‘57 Thunderbird, a ‘73 Pantera, a rare Porsche from Nicholas Cage, a ‘34 Ford owned by Toby Keith, even one of JFK’s Lincoln Continentals. Evel Knievel’s last Harley will also be auctioned.

An equally impressive selection — truly one of Vegas’ great attractions — is on display at Imperial Palace, where the 250 cars of The Auto Collections span 100 years of automotive history, including some very rare and celebrity-owned vehicles, most of which are also available for sale! As many know, the Strip also has a Lamborghini showroom at Palazzo, and Ferrari-Maserati dealership at Wynn, if you’re in the market (great merch at both places too).

Just want a taste of life in the fast lane on your Las Vegas vacation? Try Rent-A-Vette, or Dream Car Rentals, who can put you in a Ferrari, Lamborghini, Porsche or even more rare rental cars to cruise (slowly) down the Strip.

Already have your own sports car, but nowhere to really open it up? The Las Vegas Motor Speedway hosts Midnight Mayhem on select Friday nights through December, where amateur drivers can race their street legal cars on the track. Also  at the speedway, the Mario Andretti and Jeff Gordon racing schools let you ride in, or actually drive, a NASCAR or BMW formula car. Of course, the Speedway features real competitions too, like the NHRA Las Vegas Nationals this Oct. 30-Nov. 2.

If that’s a little too real, try Fast Lap or Pole Position indoor kart racing, both just off the Strip near the Palms resort, and open late … or the NASCAR cyber speedway (coasters and simulators) and café at the Sahara resort.

Insider tip: Unfortunately, Shelby Automotive’s factory tours and Carroll Shelby museum (6755 Speedway Blvd.) are closed for remodeling in October — but reopen this November.

Is Las Vegas a big sports town? You bet!

Tuesday, October 7th, 2008

Lasvegashotelssportsboo
By E.C. Gladstone

Despite the fact there are no major teams here, Las Vegas is a big sports town. And I’m not talking about our triple-A Blue Jays farm team The 51s, or our Sin City Rollergirls, though we love ‘em both. I mean world-class stuff, like our UNLV teams, PGA/LPGA golf tournaments, NASCAR and NHRA meets, National Rodeo and Pro Bull Riders finals, and of course XFC and boxing. I’m sure I left something out.

For everything else, our sportsbooks have them covered. There’s no better place in the world to bet on everything from horses to college hoops, though now that it’s football season, the NFL contests are the big draw.

Nearly every casino has one — but which are the best? Depends what you’re looking for. Serious bettors tend to flock to the cavernous Las Vegas Hilton Superbook, with over 20 giant screens — and one massive 15×20 screen — 300 seats (racebook desks with private screens as well as sportsbook loungers), a lengthy list of wagers and contests, and both an inexpensive deli and buffet are located adjacent. Bally’s has another well-established Book, with 10 huge screens, a big bar and plenty of seating options. Caesars Palace also has a big following, with the advantage of being set smack in the middle of the casino floor.

When it comes to comfort, though, the Bellagio is hard to beat — elegant and luxurious throughout, its sportsbook area (right next to the poker room) resembles a hip club, and the racebook desks have ergonomic stuffed chairs. Then there’s the Palazzo Sports Book Lounge (formerly the 40/40 Club), with white leather couches on bleacher-style terraces facing a theater-size plasma screen. With ultralounge style service and private gaming tables, this brings game watching to a decadent level. Alternatively, MGM Grand’s Book features VIP Skyboxes. And the Mirage beats most for both size and comfort — 10,000 square feet with a huge bar and food from California Pizza Kitchen, Carnegie Deli and BLT Burger steps away.

Other properties with notable sports books include Mandalay Bay, Wynn, Rio … downtown, Golden Nugget’s Book is smaller but stylish … South Point’s spacious and serviceable Book is open 24 hours. Stations Casinos (including Red Rock and Green Valley Ranch) have launched Sports Connection, which allows betting through your phone or computer (within Nevada) to their Book. Several properties also offer separate Sunday afternoon or Monday night viewing parties with drink specials and prizes, including Sapphire Gentleman’s Club.

Want to complete your sports-themed visit? Book one of the suites at Planet Hollywood filled with different players’ memorabilia (contact the hotel for specifics) or, for a budget alternative, stay at the Vegas Club downtown (rooms are clean and spacious) with a variety of collectibles on display off the casino. Grab a bite at New York, New York’s ESPN Zone, Blondie’s at Planet Hollywoood (cute cheerleaders) or Dan Marino’s at Hooters. And when you win that parlay? Splurge at sports memorabilia shops in Bally’s, Forum Shops at Caesars, Planet Hollywood or Rio!

Insider tip: At the Sam’s Town and Suncoast Monday night parties, the first hot dog and beer are free. And South Point’s Book offers Vienna Beef franks for only 75 cents. So even if you miss your bet, at least you won’t starve!

Vegas update: New restaurants, shows, hotels and more

Friday, September 26th, 2008

Lasvegascrissangel
By E.C. Gladstone

It’s amazing, but it’s true: while so many parts of the U.S. are experiencing economic challenges — slowing down, tightening belts, watching budgets — Las Vegas continues to explode with so many new offerings (even though some things are on hold even here), it’s hard to keep up! So I just had to step back and take a quick inventory of everything new we’re going to see in Sin City before the end of 2008:

Restaurants

I’ve already detailed all the new nightclubs and lounges, but at Lavo and SushiSamba, the food is as good as the scenes (both Palazzo). Other new restaurants include Tender Steakhouse (crazy selections of beef, game meats, oysters, caviars) and T&T Mexican at Luxor, Kerry Simon’s new must-go at Palms Place, addictive BLT Burger (Mirage ), sexy sushi/sake spot Koi (Planet Hollywood), Yellowtail at Bellagio, Brand Steak at Monte Carlo, and a totally redesigned dining room and menu at Border Grill (Mandalay Bay).

Entertainment

On the entertainment front, the big news is Cirque du Soleil’s new Criss Angel BeLIEve show at Luxor, and — proving that old is new again — Donny & Marie at Flamingo. Other new shows include Raw Talent Live (a streetwise futuristic Latino dance production, at Sahara), Scarlett-Princess of Magic (about time we had a female magician, at Planet Hollywood ) … and watch for Terry Fator moving to Mirage, Danny Gans bringing a new show to Wynn and Gordie Brown returning to Golden Nugget.

Gaming

Not to forget Vegas’ "raison d’etre," there are a few new things in gaming as well, including the Hard Rock Hotel’s superswanky poker room, Planet Hollywood’s cool, tech-loungey sportsbook, the first totally automated poker tables in Nevada at Excalibur, and a dedicated New Slots area at Golden Nugget to try tomorrow’s hot machines today.

Shopping

New retail includes EDIDI New York handbags (Palazzo), Paige Premium Denim (Venetian’s Grand Canal), and Kira Plastinina (Fashion Show).

Hotels and resorts

There are even several new Las Vegas hotels opening up, including Aliante in the Northwest, Summerlin’s Element (an eco-friendly Westin Starwood boutique), Henderson’s 80-acre M Resort, Eastside Cannery on Boulder Highway, and by the end of the year, right in Strip central, Steve Wynn’s sure-to-be-magnificent Encore.

Last but definitely not least, the Mirage will debut a new, very impressive volcano in December, with an event that should not be missed!

Insider tip: It isn’t cheap, but for those with hearts of gold (and wallets to match), Andre Agassi’s annual Grand Slam for Children charity gala on October 11 at Wynn is going to feature Sheryl Crow, The Killers, David Spade, Rod Stewart and many surprise guests.

Las Vegas is a cultural desert (but in a good way)

Friday, September 12th, 2008

Bellagio_las_vegas
By E.C. Gladstone

Ever since 1955, when Noel Coward graced the stage at the Desert Inn, there’s been an ongoing debate about whether or not culture could thrive in the freewheeling, easy-dealing Sin City. Surprisingly, when art collector Steve Wynn opened the Bellagio with its own Gallery of Fine Art, the discussion only became more heated.

But the upcoming performance of legendary operatic tenor Placido Domingo at Planet Hollywood’s Theatre for the Performing Arts on September 15 seemed like a good time to review the more refined pursuits of our little oasis.

Small by museum standards,  Bellagio’s Gallery nonetheless continues to present worthy exhibitions. The current American Modernism review includes many rarely seen canvases by Georgia O’Keefe, Max Weber, Hans Hoffman, Marsden Hartley, Arthur Garfield Dove and Arshile Gorky in an unusually relaxed and intimate setting. Visitors to the property should also enjoy three free attractions: The Art Of Richard MacDonald in the foyer of the ‘O’ Theatre, the glorious Dale Chihuly glass sculpture in the hotel lobby, and the ever-changing floral displays at Bellagio’s Conservatory & Botanical Gardens.

If science or history are in your sights, Luxor has a newly expanded presentation of Bodies The Exhibition and the Tropicana houses an exhibit of genuine S.S.Titanic artifacts. Forum Shops, Fashion Show Mall and the Grand Canal Shoppes all have a wde variety of retail art galleries worth exploring (Peter Max, Peter Lik and more).

Anyone here the first week of the month (or any) should try to attend First Fridays downtown, a regular open house and fanciful block party of our city’s downtown galleries on and around Charleston Boulevard. Golden Nugget is certainly the preeminent place to stay downtown — though it’s actually the budget-priced historic El Cortez casino which has a free First Friday shuttle.

Farther afield on the west side, the Las Vegas Philharmonic is celebrating its tenth year; Bosendorfer Pianos of Las Vegas displays the largest selection of the uncommon instruments in the country; and the Las Vegas Art Museum is presenting a selection of contemporary art owned by local collectors, including works by Basquiat, Hirst, Hockney, Murakami, Price, Ruscha and Warhol (LVAM is hosting a celebratory gala at the elegant Wynn resort on September 27). Summerlin’s Red Rock Resort and JW Marriott are two fine places to stay nearby.

So feel free to continue the debate about Las Vegas culture over a plate of fine cheese and a glass of excellent wine at any number of excellent restaurants up and down the Strip… we’ve already made up our minds!

Insider tip: Though it is a retail store, Bauman Rare Books (Palazzo) displays astounding historical literary works, political documents, and even some artworks — but Las Vegans may be most intrigued by their impressive collections of Western Frontier maps and rare food, wine and cocktail books.
