Las Vegas hotels By E.C. Gladstone

Even though Mother’s Day has come and gone, the occasion inspired me to want to pay tribute to our many great female performers, young and old. Las Vegas may host the world’s most beautiful women, but it also has many of the most talented. If you want to see a Grand Dame put on a show, I can’t think of any place with more choices than the Las Vegas hotels. The list is always changing, but take a look at who’s on the boards these days…

Cher, Caesars Palace

Cher’s own self-styled career tribute is as much a Bob Mackie fashion exposition as it is a concert. “Don’t I look great in person?” the age-defying diva cracks. “It only took me five hours to get this way!” With a full troupe of tight dancers and aerialists backing her, Cher’s Colosseum show is clearly meant to be crowd-pleasing though it also includes more video than you might expect. Still, her retrospective duet with Sonny on “The Beat Goes On,” her equally effective takes on Pat Benatar’s “Love Is A Battlefield” and Thelma Houston’s “Don’t Leave Me This Way” are all pleasant surprises. Despite rumors, Cher is staying at Caesars at least through 2010

Top people-watching dining spots on the Las Vegas Strip

Mon-Ami-Gabi By E.C. Gladstone

It isn’t one of the more promoted activities in Sin City, but take in the combination of sexy locals, celebrities aplenty, and visitors from around the globe, and the people watching at Las Vegas hotels has to be some of the best anywhere. Right now, while the weather’s warm but not quite blistering, the best place to do that is at one of the Strip’s many outdoor dining spots, most of which — along with the free entertainment — offer good quality at reasonable prices… Here are some of my favorites:

Mon Ami Gabi, Paris Las Vegas

In many respects, the Grand Mere of Stripside dining, Mon Ami Gabi remains the standard. After ten years, MAG remains well maintained, with a great staff and solid French brasserie food, but also a vegetarian sampler, several fish choices (even Skate), and over 10 different kinds of frites. A few weeks back I had a Steak Bordelaise at the bar that was, well, perfect. If you don’t want to wait for the patio or pavilion, the extensive interior (modeled after an idealized Parisian bistro — but thankfully not overburdened by the cliché Lautrec prints) is pleasantly romantic.

Best cabanas in Las Vegas

By E. C. Gladstone

Labor Day marks the "home stretch" of pool season in Las Vegas, and prime time for our competitively lavish cabanas. While renting a cabana might seem an extreme indulgence to some (prices rival those of rooms, going up on weekends and even up-per on holidays), it makes sense if you’re planning on a whole day at the pool with the family or friends. Typically you must be a hotel guest to reserve one, but you can invite a number of non-hotel guests (limits vary) along. And if an "adult/club pool" is in your plans, it may actually be a good deal since it includes admission fees for your whole party!

The best of them all include ample relaxation seating as well as reserved chaises, complimentary fruit/snacks and soft drinks, plasma TV, iPod-docking stereo, house phone, a safe for valuables and personalized service. Most also offer private massage service from their resort spa.

Here are my favorites:

• As far as cabana comforts, the Wynn resort is hard to beat — theirs are so luxurious you may want to move in!
Bellagio‘s popular 50+ cabanas are roomy and pleasant, as you’d expect for their famously refined pool area.
• Those at The Venetian & Palazzo are comparable — and they even have A/C units.
• With certainly the most magnificent pool area, The Beach at Mandalay Bay also has over 70 cabanas of several classes from $150/daily upwards.
• Anyone can reserve the Red Rock Resort‘s cabanas at their cool circular pool deck, and they include Nintendo Wii and several treats daily (but start at a steep $400).
• The Hilton, MGM, Mirage and TI–all nice pools—are also good options.

Mandalayrotui
Best deals:

Mandalay Bay‘s Private Garden Bungalows ($150 & up)
• The Golden Nugget‘s sexy & shady cabanas ($175 & up) are perched on two levels above their shark tank — you can take a tube slide straight down into the pool!
Excalibur‘s recently remodeled deck includes an adult-only pool with pleasant cabanas, a bargain at only $75-150.
•Both TI and the JW Marriott, Summerlin offer half-day options at $100 or less (does anyone really spend 12 hours at a pool anyway?) and even the Marriott’s not-too-shabby Grand Cabana maxes out at $225 on weekends.

Adult/club pools:

• The nicest party pool, MGM’s Wet Republic, also has the best standard cabanas — roomy and chic, with huge TVs, DVD players and Xbox game systems (their 4 VIP cabanas feature king beds and private Astroturf terraces)
Moorea at Mandalay Beach’s four open air "pavilions" are also gorgeous — and the Villa Rotui sky cabana, with panoramic views, rotating circular bed, stripper pole, wet bar and private pool is as cool as it gets.
Sapphire pool at Rio may not have the swankiest cabanas, but its definitely the most "adult" party pool — and the only one which will pick up your party in a limo!
• For Vegas’ biggest pool party, Rehab (Sundays at the Hard Rock Hotel ), renting one of their see-and-be-seen open cabanas is a good way to get you and 12 or so guests in faster — hope it’s worth $1,000 or more!
• And if you’re dead set on the swank spa-quality cabanas at TAO Beach (Venetian), the bleacher-style bed-bungalows at Bare Pool (Mirage), or the exclusive Venus Pool cabanas (Caesars Palace) on a weekend…then you don’t need my help!

I’ve been told to warn you: prices can vary for many reasons, and advance reservations are pretty essential.

Insider tip: There are a lot of amazing concerts and DJ events here Labor Day weekend, but one definitely stands out: Ice Cube at the House of Blues on Saturday, August 30. A true hip hop legend in a room that small? Holla.

Hollywood heads to Sin City for CineVegas film fest

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

Cinevegas
By E.C. Gladstone

The bright lights of Vegas are no strangers in the movie world. But usually you think of Vegas as a place movies are made — like Ocean’s 11 (and 12, and 13!), the recent What Happens In Vegas and 21 — rather than where movies are watched.

Think again. Vegas also has its own annual film festival, CineVegas, which I’ve attended for several years now. Helmed by Hollywood legend Dennis Hopper (Creative Advisory Board Chairman) and Sundance veteran Trevor Groth (Artistic Director), this year’s 10th anniversary fest, hosted by the  Palms resort’s Brenden Theatres from June 12-21, promises a broad selection of mainstream, independent and even experimental films as well as — in true Vegas fashion — a long list of parties and celebrations.

Must-see screenings include The Rocker (Rainn Wilson, Christina Applegate), The Great Buck Howard (John Malkovich, Emily Blunt), Choke (Sam Rockwell, Anjelica Huston), Catherine Breillat’s The Last Mistress and Abel Ferrara’s strip club comedy Go-Go Tales (Willem Dafoe). World premieres will include Dark Streets (Gabriel Mann, Izabella Miko) and Your Name Here (Bill Pullman, Taryn Manning). The festival will also feature documentaries including Gonzo (Hunter S. Thompson) and the U.S. premiere of Abel Ferrara’s Chelsea on the Rocks; a special selection from Mexican filmmakers including Gael Garcia Bernal’s directorial debut; shorts from Nevada helmers; and unique events like a screening of artist Takashi Murakami’s "Planting The Seeds"on the Wynn resort’s ethereal Lake of Dreams.

On Sunday, June 15, a special preview showing of Get Smart (Steve Carell, Anne Hathaway) at Planet Hollywood will benefit co-star Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson’s The Rock Foundation, with DJ hosting. James Caan, Anjelica Huston, Don Cheadle, Rosario Dawson, Viggo Mortsensen, Sam Rockwell, Bill Pullman and Bijou Phillips are among the many other celebs you can expect to see during the week.

And the parties? There’s at least one every single night of the fest, all around the Palms resort, at Planet Hollywood, Blush in the Wynn resort, TAO Beach at The Venetian, Sapphire Gentleman’s Club, The Beatles’ Revolution lounge at Mirage, and even on downtown’s Fremont Street. If you’re coming to town, you might want to take a break from the blackjack tables and check this out.

Vegas pool scene heats up and strips down

Thursday, May 8th, 2008

Baremiragepool
By E.C. Gladstone

In Las Vegas, we do everything to excess. Which is why we not only have some of the world’s most impressive pools, and the world’s hottest nightclubs, but also a combination of the two, Club Pools (or "Ultra Pools"). These private, adults-only destinations at Las Vegas hotels emphasize luxury and decadence to a pumping DJ beat, with specialty cocktails, stunning bikini-clad servers, and an infectious party atmosphere. If a top comes off here or there (some allow "European" sunbathing), it’s all in the name of fun.

There are several to choose from at hotels on the Strip — and the off-Strip Hard Rock Hotel‘s Rehab Sundays remains the one to beat. Still, I lean toward a few favorites (all "European" optional) at other Las Vegas hotels. More compact, the Mirage Bare Pool is very mod, very private, and very chill. … The Sunset Pool at Wynn Las Vegas is surrounded by roses and topiary, with in-pool day beds ("lily pads") and some of the most luxurious cabanas I’ve ever seen. … Moorea Beach Club at Mandalay Bay takes a different approach, emphasizing an exotic, sophisticated atmosphere — though their Villa Rotui sky cabana may be the coolest party space (rotating bed, stripper pole, panoramic views) in the whole town.

Other club pools to check out during your Las Vegas vacation include TAO Beach at The Venetian Hotel, Venus at Caesars, and Ditch Fridays at  The Palms, all of which offer different flavors of Vegas daylife. Ask your concierge about admission policies.

But the just-opened Wet Republic at the MGM Grand Hotel sets a new standard. With two salt-water pools (the only in LV), six spa baths, deluxe cabanas, a chic lounge and long bar area, it has the potential to dwarf all others in style, size, and fun!

Insider tip: For a different kind of secluded pool experience, visit the verdant, shady and elegant Venezia tower pool. Open to all Venetian property guests, it features European café service from Bouchon.

Have you considered shipping your luggage?

Thursday, April 24th, 2008

Stock_luggage_st_2By Samantha Chapnick

Unless your next vacation involves an all-inclusive nudist colony, chances are your flight is going to involve a rude luggage awakening. Several airlines have added fees averaging $25 for a second checked bag, and even more for oversize luggage.

So why not let someone else do all the schlepping if you’re going to have to pay for it anyway?

If you’re definitely going to have an extra bag, it can even be cheaper to use a luggage delivery service.

Here’s the lowdown:

  • A full-service luggage delivery service will come to your door, pick up your packed luggage, wrap and ship it, track it, ensure it gets to your final destination in perfect condition, and, if desired, do the same for the return trip.
  • Anyone can send a bag through FedEx or UPS for significantly less than a luggage delivery service, because you do not get the hand-holding. Just be aware that neither FedEx nor UPS consider this their main service, so they neither promote it nor encourage it. TRANSLATION: Don’t expect sympathy when you’re at a Las Vegas hotel and your clubs are in South Beach.
  • Luggage shipping is more logical for domestic travel. For international travel, you might have to deal with customs-related delays.
  • The most popular luggage shippers are: Luggage Free, The Luggage Club, Luggage Forward and Sports Express. They vary in the ease of use of their sites. I will be testing them out over the next few months and will report in with my findings.
  • The average bag (30 pounds) will be picked up at your door, wrapped, shipped domestically for 5-business-day arrival and tracked for about $50 through Luggage Free. This includes $1,000 coverage in the event of loss or damage.
  • SportsExpress is specifically geared towards sports equipment, with items like a large golf bag costing about $160 and skis $100.
  • FedEx and UPS are the best budget choices, with a 30-pound bag costing only $20.15 (including home pick-up, but it has to be packaged by you).
  • For advance planners, Luggage Free is the cheapest full-service option. It charges only $1.65 per pound for 5-business-day shipping.
  • Expect expedited shipping (1-2 day) to be at least double or triple the cost of the slowest shipping.
  • Most luggage shippers do not time guarantee delivery to international destinations because customs delay is possible. Only SportsExpress guarantees an international delivery date and will expedite a shipment (for free) to meet the stated deadline.

Business travel hotels: ‘New, cool, comfortable’

Friday, February 29th, 2008

Kimberlysuiteotb
By Lena Katz

I don’t know about you, but I don’t spend nearly enough time at the Four Seasons Wailea. Or the Banyan Tree Phuket. Or any Shangri-La, anywhere. I am a strictly business traveler, and sadly, those hotels don’t often fit into my itinerary.

And I’m a travel writer, so I can only imagine how much worse the plight is for a corporate type. You’re dreaming of Shangri-La, sleeping in a nondescript Kansas City hotel, and wondering, "Why is life so unfair?"

Apparently a lot of hoteliers have started to wonder the very same thing, because at the annual American Lodging Investment Summit in January, the hot topic was … drumroll … the resurgence of the "new, cool, comfortable" business hotel.

Whether in the Caribbean, Hawaii or the big city, that hotel category is starting to get a lot more attention, just because business travelers have such endless need of it. Road warriors get understandably tired of lumpy beds and instant coffee. They want a little something extra … and they’re about to get it.

The W Hotel Group (and its parent company Starwood) have probably made the biggest splash, with their well-publicized launch of the Aloft brand, a "vision" of contemporary, bright-and-styley city hotels that promises to revolutionize the concept of corporate lodging.

Hilton Hotels
has devised a (warning, cheesy pun ahead) tasteful promotion for its Homewood Suites chain: free personal grocery shopping for guests who want to utilize their en suite kitchens, and free beer, wine and "light dinner" (Monday-Thursday) for those who want to utilize the sit-around-and-do-nothing feature.

Meanwhile, other hotel groups are expanding their established business travel brand into under-the-radar destinations.

Cher plans long-term gig on Las Vegas Strip

Friday, February 8th, 2008

Cher_vegas
Cher
is the latest pop music legend to settle in for a long concert
gig at one of the top Las Vegas hotels.

Cher has agreed to perform approximately 200 shows over
three years at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace, where she will
alternate performances with Bette Midler and Elton John.

"I started in Vegas at Caesars, so I’ve come full
circle," Cher said in a prepared
statement. "I’m back and I plan to give my fans the best experience
yet."

Cher’s 90-minute show –
set to open May 6 — will include lavish costumes and state-of-the-art lighting
and special effects.

Cheap tickets for the show will be hard to come by — prices will range from $95 to $250.

New Las Vegas hotel, club add excitement to the Strip

Thursday, January 24th, 2008

If you’re looking for something new on your next Las Vegas vacation, here are two spots you may want to try.

The Palazzo Resort Hotel just opened in mid-January. With more than 3,000 suites, upscale shops and restaurants and a Canyon Ranch SpaClub, the Palazzo is "the new standard for luxury and sophistication in Las Vegas," Palazzo President Rob Goldstein says.

The Shoppes at the Palazzo features a two-story waterfall and shops including Barneys New York, Van Cleef & Arpels and Christian Louboutin. Celebrity chefs including Mario Batali, Charlie Trotter and Wolfgang Puck have restaurants at the hotel. And music mogul Jay-Z is behind the hotel’s 40/40 Club sports bar.

Elsewhere on the Strip, The Bank Nightclub at the Bellagio hotel says it caters to "a discerning audience with higher sensibilities." A glass-encased dance floor and custom-designed lighting aim to create an elegant atmosphere. The club also features European bottle service and VIP booths. The Bank is open Thursday through Sunday, 10 p.m. to 4 a.m.
