Summer vacation in Chicago: Fabulous festivals

Monday, May 25th, 2009

Chicago hotel Maybe it's the joy of surviving yet another long winter, or maybe people in Chicago just love an excuse for food and fun… Regardless, once the weather gets warm, the Windy City heats up with tons of summer festivals. Music, food, art, ethnic heritage — you name it, it's here, making Chicago a great choice for a summer vacation.

Most of the biggies highlighted here are downtown in and around Grant Park, so you can book a Chicago hotel in the Loop/Millennium Park/Grant Park area and walk. If you want to experience summer in Chicago like a local, though, hop on the El and try one of the many neighborhood fests. Retro on Roscoe is a fun event in a cute Northside neighborhood, Lakeview Music Fest features food and music in the shadow of Wrigley Field, and there are many others.

57th Street Art Fair June 5-6: Painting, sculpture, photography, jewelery, ceramics and much more. Billed as Chicago's oldest juried art fair, this one happens in President Obama's old neighborhood (Hyde Park). FREE.

Chicago Gospel Music Festival June 6-7: The first of many multi-day concert events held in Grant Park throughout the summer, this one features more than 50 acts on three stages. FREE.

Chicago Blues Festival June 12-14: Same idea as Gospel Fest, with a different genre. Eddie C. Campbell, Bettye LaVette and Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings are the headliners. FREE.

Food festivals add spice to summer vacation

Summer vacation By Lena Katz

From sea to shining sea, America’s getting ready to celebrate all that tastes great this summer. Whether you’re in the market for a Hawaii vacation, an East Coast summer home or a quick family-friendly hop to a Tampa hotel, an awesome array of food festivals will add extra flavor to your holiday. Here are my top 10 picks for 2009.

In the Pacific Northwest, Bite of Oregon August 7-9 showcases organic/sustainable produce, great seafood, and craft beer — the latter in the brand-new Oregon Brewed Craft  Beer Garden. And may we just say…it’s about time? Oenophiles note, Oregon’s Willamette Valley wine region may well be the wine snobs’ next “it” place — so don’t just sip, take notes!

Down south, the LA Wine Fest June 6-7 showcases primarily California Central Coast and Napa wineries, with contingents from the Loire Valley and Australia, as well as a number of boutique-label tequilas. In keeping with Los Angeles “get ready for your closeup” mentality, the festival includes “lifestyles” vendors like Italian gastronomy site AcademiaBarilla.com, but very little in the way of actual food.

Indoor water park adds splash to Chicago family vacation

Travel By Dannelle Sibley

There are lots of indoor water parks in the Wisconsin Dells, just 3 to 4 hours from Chicago. But we decided to stick closer to home for our family vacation and visit CoCo Key Water Resort, which bills itself as Illinois’ largest indoor water park.

The water park is attached to the Sheraton Chicago Northwest in Arlington Heights, less than 30 miles from downtown Chicago. By staying overnight, we were able to request early check-in, and overnighters are allowed to visit the water park starting with the time you check in until the water park closes. Then the next day, you get to visit again from open to close (at no extra charge), so we got two days of water park fun.

With in-and-out privileges, we were able to take an afternoon break to let the kids eat lunch and take a nap. After nap time we played in the arcade and then hit the water park again. On the first day of our family vacation we went to the water park three times. The kids wanted to visit Parrot’s Perch — an interactive area with slides and a huge bucket that dumps hundreds of gallons of water every few minutes — one more time before bed. This was great because we didn’t have to worry about whining, fussy kids protesting to leave to go home — we just went upstairs to our room.

The next day at the crack of dawn, the kids were up and ready for breakfast. The hotel offers breakfast, and booths are equipped with TVs. After breakfast we hit the water park. Since we arrived at 2 p.m. the day before, going in at 10 a.m. was an added bonus. We were the first to arrive. I must say that comparing the 2 p.m. arrival to the 10 a.m. arrival was about the same in terms of cleanliness and maintenance. Everything was clean and shiny, and the staff was great. I wasn’t worried about the safety of the kids in the water. I fell into the water while trying to get into my inner tube, and I was immediately surrounded by four lifeguards. (The kids thought that was extra funny.)

Familyvacations At the CoCo, CoCo Cabana

Also, by arriving at 10 a.m., we were able to get a cabana. It had room for up to six people and included tables, chairs, a TV, phone, wireless Internet and a safe — ours for the entire day at the water resort. This is a great perk to have on the day that you check out. It's the perfect place to relax when the kids get a little tired or take a break for a quick meal. Prices for the cabana range from $50 to $200, depending on the day of the visit.

After sliding down tubes — and being soaked by the huge bucket of water — you can grab a bite right there in the water resort: Hot dogs, fries, pizza, root beer floats, ice cream, tropical beverages, and snacks all are available.

The best part is that we didn’t have to wait for summer to feel warm weather. The temperature inside CoCo Key is never below 80 degrees.

If you can take more excitement on your family vacation, the new LegoLand Discovery Center is just a short drive away in Schaumburg, so you can make your close-to-home getaway a splash and build a staycation that the kids will love.

Chicago vacation: Party all night at Looptopia

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

Chicagoblog
It bills itself as "trippy" and "ethereal" among other things. But one thing’s for sure: If you like art, nightlife or just big parties, you need to book a Chicago hotel room — now!

The city’s second annual Looptopia is Friday, May 2. This arts extravaganza takes over the Loop with 300 artists at 100 venues showcasing music, visual art, interactive activities, theater and more. You’ll find music from the DePaul University A Capella Choir, dance from Jezebelly Tribal Bellydance, children’s story readings, a performance by Cirque du Soleil… in short, something for everyone. The fun starts at 5 p.m. and goes until early the next morning.

Several Chicago hotels are hosting events. At the Palmer House Hilton, there’s a musical comedy act at 10 p.m. and songs from Broadway shows at 11 p.m. Then from 1 a.m. to 5 p.m. you can make your own art (like a t-shirt or mask), while enjoying music and performances. W Chicago City Center will have video games, board games and Killerspin (professional table tennis) from 6:30-9:30 p.m.

There are plenty of Chicago hotels right in the Loop, so you can be in the middle of all the action. So book your last minute trip, and rest up while you can!
