  • The Canada Line has opened and slashed mass-transit travel time between Vancouver Airport and downtown Vancouver to 25 minutes. The airport station is in the Link Building between the domestic and international terminals. The train serves nine stops in Vancouver and four in suburban Richmond.
  • Mexicana has shifted its check-in operations at Los Angeles International Airport to the upper/departure level of the Tom Bradley International Terminal.
  • Hertz has signed up Andrews Car Rental, an agency in Sri Lanka, as its franchisee in the island’s capital of Colombo. (more…)

Atlanta Gay Pride 2009 moves to Halloween weekend

by Antoinette Bierman

While most Gay Pride festivals take place over summer, Atlanta is fixing to add a little spookiness to its LGBT festivities this year as it moves Pride to Halloween weekend. The festival returns to Piedmont Park after a dismal stint at the Civic Center in 2008, and the weekend-long celebration is sure to live up to high expectations. Below are my tips for the best events during Pride.

ATLANTA HOTELS:
If you’re traveling from out of town there are numerous Atlanta hotels to choose from with gay-friendly accommodations located close to the festivities. The W Atlanta Midtown is adjacent to the park and offers a chic, urban atmosphere. If you prefer the quaint and unique environment of a boutique hotel, consider the Hotel Indigo located across from the Fabulous Fox Theatre. For travelers who want to stay in the heart of downtown Atlanta the Glenn Hotel features a rooftop bar and a short walk to the Georgia Aquarium.

PARTIES, PARADES & ENTERTAINMENT
Entertainment is always exciting at Atlanta Pride, but the earlier you arrive, you can maximize your time checking out everything that the Pride Committee has planned. Check out Stride Into Pride, a weekly bar crawl Wednesday nights through Oct. 28; and be sure to check the updated bar schedule at atlantapride.org for the specific details on which bars the crawl will hit. From the eyes of Emma: Kashmir, India

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

by Emma Simmons

In the fall of October 2008, I traveled to Kashmir, India with my photography mentor, John Isaac, to assist a photography workshop through the Maine Media Workshops.  Kashmir was a place I wasn’t sure I would be so lucky to experience at my age due to the current turmoil which has happened in the past years.  In the past few years John had traveled back and forth roughly fifteen times for his book “The Vale of Kashmir.”  It was John’s stories and descriptions of the landscape, both beautiful and serene that inspired me to join him on his next journey.

For photographers like myself, it is hard to describe an experience, a special place, or a culture with only words.  Instead, I allow my photographs to speak for themselves. Spending eight nights on a beautiful houseboat on Dal Lake in Srinigar, Kashmir, we spent our days waking up at sunrise to the call of prayer and enjoying a nice cup of Kashmiri tea before venturing around the beautiful country.  Whether it was the floating market that was its own little oasis on the Dal Lake at 5am, or driving up into the high mountains and stopping in small rural towns, I was completely taken aback by the sincerity and kindness of the people whom I photographed in their natural surroundings.
