By David De Lalio

I love this time of year, because I can be in my house on the Colorado Front Range where it’s 60 degrees, while 2 hours up in the mountains fresh powder is falling and building a great snow base for the winter.  This is also the time of year when Colorado hotels and condos put their best deals out for the upcoming ski season.

Here’s the scoop on some of the best ski resorts and deals out west right now:

Rome’s best gelato shop

Those on a Europe vacation know that when in Rome, you should do as the Romans do. Luckily, what Romans do is eat some pretty awesome gelato.

Located in the heart of the historic city center, the popular San Crispino Gelateria is considered one of the best gelato shops in Rome. Gelato purists, San Crispino doesn’t bother with fancy toppings and they definitely don’t serve it on cones. But as the lines out the door prove, this is a-ok with the Romans.

In addition to being located next to the Trevi Fountain and right off via Veneto, one of the most affluent shop-filled streets in the world, San Crispino is walking distance to some fantastic Rome hotels, including the Residenza Dominziano, the Canova Tadolini Residenza and the Boutique Hotel Trevi. In addition to being close to popular tourist sites, all three Rome hotels offer the characteristic Italian elegance and ambiance.

Have your gelato and eat it, too, when you stay at select Starwood hotels
For an unbeatable Europe vacation to The Eternal City, book your trip by July 23 and you’ll find big savings at select Starwood hotels on sale throughout Europe. Enjoy luxury at a discount with the 5-star Westin Excelsior and Eden hotels, where you can save up to 40% off your stay with breakfast included.

Disney’s new World of Color debuts June 11

Disneyland World of Color

Whittling down a list of sights to take in when planning California vacations is no mean feat. But if you throw Disneyland into the works, you’ve got yourself a bona-fide game changer. Even if you’ve already been to Disneyland, you haven’t yet seen World of Color at Disney California Adventure, which opens today, June 11, and warrants a Disneyland vacation all on its own.

If you’re anything like me, the details will probably set your feet into giddy motion. World of Color is a 25-minute, nighttime-animation, laser and music extravaganza consisting of highlights from numerous classic Disney movies, all projected against an immense wall of water. Hard to imagine, I know, but check out this World of Color video for some sense of this gorgeous Disney spectacular (I’ve watched it  once, and I’m already sold.)

Great deals on California vacations

Now is the perfect time to book your trip to Disneyland to experience the World of Color — not only because you’ll enjoy the best of summer vacations, but also to take advantage of the latest Disney deal. Book now through September 1, and you can get a 5-for-3 Disneyland vacation for the price of a 3-day ticket. Think 5 nights at Disneyland is too much? If so, it might be time to wake you inner wild child.

Hawaii vacations come easier with new Continental flights from California

Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea Makena

Hawaiian vacation dream? Nope, just the five-star Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea.

If you’ve been putting off that long dreamed of and richly deserved Hawaii vacation, I’m about to give you one less reason to keep waiting: Continental Airlines recently launched a slew of new flights from Southern California to Hawaii.

  • Los Angeles to Maui: The new flight departs daily at 5:05 a.m. and arrives at 8:45 p.m. local time, with return flights leaving at 10:15 p.m. and arriving at LAX at 5:45 a.m.
  • Los Angeles to Honolulu: Continental has added a second daily flight between LAX and Honolulu, up from its single-flight service.
  • Orange County to Maui: Flights departing at 5:40 p.m. and arriving in Maui at 9:25 p.m. now take place 4 times a week, but will increase to daily service in summer to accommodate demand. Return flights leave Maui at 12:10 a.m. and touch down in Orange County at 7:45 a.m.
  • Orange County to Honolulu: The new daily flight departs Orange County at 9:00 a.m. and arrives in Honolulu at 12:45 p.m. Return passengers can hop a flight back to Orange county at 2:00 p.m., arriving at 9:35 p.m. California time.

And here’s a few more great reasons to make haste to Hawaii now: the Orbitz Summer Hotel Sale, which can help you score a third night free plus daily breakfast for two at select hotels, and super flight deals to Hawaii from both United Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines. Book your hotel and air together as well, and you can also benefit from great Hawaii travel package deals.

Vegas secret stays: Upgrading to all-star status

Monday, May 3rd, 2010

By E.C. Gladstone

Though you’d have a hard time finding a more democratic city than Las Vegas, the simple truth is, not all visitors to our Las Vegas hotels are created equal. Some do indeed get treated much, much better. Oh sure, everyone knows that big time gamblers get VIP status. But even those of us who are more moderate in our spending can find ways to feel like we’ve hit the big time. With Las Vegas hotel room rates still at the most competitive levels in years, it’s easier than ever to upgrade to exclusive club floors, suites and other semi-secret options.

Favorite Vegas secret stays

Wynn_Las_Vegas Encore at Wynn and Wynn Las Vegas: Both of these sister hotels have separate VIP entrances and registrations with private elevators leading to exclusive floors with subtle but significant details in the rooms. Between the two, I lean slightly towards the original Wynn tower suites with its rooms decorated in an updated Modern Regency palette, beds nothing short of exquisite, and marble-floored bathrooms with separate spa tub and shower (excellent water pressure, too), and every amenity imaginable. Overall, I’ve never experienced a room so elegant, ergonomic (in the truest sense) tasteful and comfortable. Tower suite guests also enjoy exclusive pool areas, with the nicest cabanas on the Strip.
