From New York to the Canary Islands, we showcase honeymoon spots where gay marriage is legal. Credit: Stagedoorjohnny.

By Matthew Link

In June 2011, gays and lesbians and straights jammed the streets of Manhattan for an impromptu street celebration as New York became the sixth U.S. state (in addition to Washington, D.C.) to fully legalize same-sex marriage. It now stands alongside Massachusetts (passed in 2004), Connecticut (in 2008), Iowa (in 2009), Vermont (in 2009), New Hampshire (in 2010), and Washington D.C. (in 2010) as the natural spots for gays and lesbians to plan their weddings and/or honeymoons.

With so much changing month to month in the gay marriage world, we spotlight which states and countries actually have full gay marriage (as opposed to the 50-plus places that just civil unions or domestic partnerships), and what the gay scene is like in each place for travelers. (more…)

Vacation without the kids: Start with a romantic stroll by Disney's BoardWalk Inn.

By Jill E. Cooper

Renowned for its theme parks and family fun, Walt Disney Resort might be one of the last places that come to mind for a romantic getaway. But it’d be a mistake to write off Disney as a spot to reconnect with your partner. It is, after all, one of the world’s most popular honeymoon destinations.

Go there to rev up the romance – and please, for once, leave the kids at home. (more…)

You needn’t have had past romantic beach vacations ruined by the presence of gallivanting kids to favor the occasional adults-only resort. And you certainly don’t have to have a dislike of children. In fact, some of the most frequent customers of adults-only summer vacations are parents themselves, just looking for a bit of quiet romance far from the din and cacophony of family life. Downtown Disney date nights: Hot days, hotter nights

Love is in the air: Be seduced by the Cirque performers' aerial feats at La Nouba in Downtown Disney.

By Deborah Bowen

How often do you hear the phrase, “I had the BEST margarita … at Disney!”?  One trip to Mexico Pavilion and you’ll hear it plenty.

Too often people make the mistake of dismissing the Walt Disney World Resort as a “kids’ place.”  So take my advice, grown-ups: Explore your inner child during the day then turn that Disney magic into date night once the sun goes down.

Start your rendezvous with a good meal at Paradiso 37 in Downtown Disney. With a diverse menu that trots the North, Central and South Americas, the restaurant sparkles at night, when couples gather at lakeside tables for live music and libations from the unique tequila tower. Entrees are gussied-up comfort food, from Mac and Cheese Bites to Colombian-style Crispy Hen and Chargrilled Filet Mignon. Desserts indulge sweet tooths. Split rich Tres Leches cake or outrageous Chocolate Stack: chocolate cake and chocolate mousse layered on warm caramel, topped with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream and sprinkles. (more…)

Meet me in Madrid: Orbitz launches major Europe sale

Fall in love with the Gran Via and other European destinations during our Europe sale through June 5.

By Valerie Moloney

Europe, we’re in lust with you — you of haunting ruins, rustic food, couture and ancient art. What we would sacrifice to walk with your kings, your artists, your ingenues.  As a destination, you cannot be sampled in one itinerary — nor would we want you to be.

The timing couldn’t be better for a Europe vacation, what, thanks to Orbitz’s sale on flights and major Starwood hotels through June 5. If we don’t strike now, there’d be tons to regret — like that first pint of creamy Guinness in Dublin’s Temple Bar — and we just couldn’t have that. (more…)

Split the difference: The two sides of St. Maarten

Hugged by hills and the Caribbean coastline, Radisson Blu Resort shows off French beach style with flair.

By Vince Font

St. Maarten is a tiny island with a big, big heart. It’s even got two alternate name spellings — St. Martin for its French-run half, and Sint Maarten for its Dutch-run other — which in my opinion has always been the sign of somewhere truly unique. But St. Maarten’s got a lot more going for it than alternative spellings, as anyone who’s ever been there can attest. Looking for Caribbean beach vacations that’ll take you someplace you’ve never been? Take a closer look at what this 37-square-mile paradise of St. Maarten, where it’s not land mass that matters, but what you do with it that counts. Here are two great places to start for all budgets, starting with the affordable Captain Oliver’s Resort and rounding off with the posh Radisson Blu Resort. (more…)
