Vegas Strip Stars A-Z

Monday, October 5th, 2009

By E.C. Gladstone

So many new shows have been opening on the Strip and in all the Las Vegas Hotels, that it seems almost impossible to keep up. I have to confess that despite my Strip-hound reputation, even I haven’t had a chance to see them all. While I do, I figured the least I could do is give everyone a quick encyclopedic list of everything I have seen and would recommend (with a few I’m about to see, based on strong tips).

The uniquely dark and disturbing show, "Freaks"

"Freaks" courtesy of Harrah's Entertainment

A is for affable but accomplished tiger tamer Dirk Arthur, of Xtreme Magic (two shows daily, Wed-Mon, Tropicana) as well as Australians—specifically Human Nature, the show-stopping Motown tribute singers from down under (8 PM Sat-Thurs, Imperial Palace).

B
is for The Beatles LOVE (two shows nightly Thurs-Mon, Mirage), Cirque du Soleil’s pop rock celebration. B is also for Bette Midler, whose frolicky fun Showgirl Must Go On revue appears intermittent weekends at Caesars Colosseum. Added to this list is the provocatively pungent Blue Man Group (Two shows nightly, Venetian ) and Bite, the topless vampire rock musical you’ve always wanted to see (10:30 PM Fri-Wed).

C is for Cher (who trades off with Bette at the Colosseum in her fashion-filled career review) and the elegantly erotic Crazy Horse of Paris (two shows nightly Wed-Mon, MGM Grand).

D is for David Copperfield, certainly the most esteemed magician in town, performing intermittently at  MGM Grand. (more…)

Las Vegas Hard Rock Hotel Rocks Anew

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009

By E.C. Gladstone

Perhaps more than any of the other Las Vegas Hotels, everything about the Hard Rock is focused on attracting the young and gorgeous. That isn’t the type of property where “aging gracefully” is an option, especially since (slow economy or not) many others would love to snag their hot and happening clientele. So their new expansions- Paradise Tower up and running, HRH tower coming first quarter 2010 — almost seem overdue.

In fact, the new towers are actually the capping numbers on an album of hits the HRH has been playing ever since the luxury-leaning Morgans Group took over in 2006.

They built a big 3,000-ish capacity new (Rogue) joint for big shows, while opening Carey Hart’s intimate rock bar Wasted Space; they put sexy go-go dancers right on the casino floor and added a smart-designed Poker Room that gets good marks from novices and pro players alike; they got designer Mark Zeff to test out the new tower’s aesthetic with some gothic suites in the original building, and added 65,000 more square feet of meeting space; they replaced aging AJ’s Steakhouse with the new hip Rare 120, while bringing James Beard Foundation-awarded Italian chef Marco Porceddu in to revive Ago (Nobu remains intact); They even added new retail, including a sprawling John Varvatos boutique.

Nashville hotels

(Courtesy: Nashville Convention & Visitors Bureau)

By Rhonda Osborne

My parents used to pack the family into our car and head out on the road for a 1- to 2-week family vacation each summer as soon as school let out. With family located in Kentucky, this meant an opportunity to drive down to Tennessee for part of our trip as well. It was always a special treat if we were able to go to Nashville during this time.

Now as an adult living in Memphis for work, I am fortunate to go to Nashville almost monthly for business and leisure trips. Nashville sure has changed from when I used to go as a kid, but it is a perfect travel destination for me still today. With all of the history of the city and its constant growth, I’m able to enjoy my old favorites and always find new gems.

Vegas trots out the talent

It’s another fascinating phenomenon of Fun City: while most travel destinations might react to a slower season by offering less options, Las Vegas hotels, it seems, are actually offering more — at least when it comes to entertainers. New production shows and residencies have opened all over town in recent weeks (two, Human Nature and Mitsuri at Imperial Palace alone!), and this August-September, as usual, there’s a parade of big names coming through.

Rockers of all stripes are rushing the stages in the next few weeks: August 19, Kings of Leon hit Hard Rock Hotel…on Aug. 21, Green Day take Mandalay Bay while Traffic veteran Dave Mason makes a rare intimate lounge appearance at Santa Fe StationToby Keith scoots into Red Rock Aug. 29.

Tribute bands, performers help Vegas celebrate the ’60s

Thursday, July 9th, 2009

By E. C. Gladstone

Maybe it’s all an elaborate celebration for the Las Vegas Hilton’s 40th Anniversary, but suddenly the music of the 1960s is bursting out at all the Las Vegas hotels. The biggest entertainment buzz right now is for Human Nature (at Imperial Palace), the unlikely Australian boy band who has remade itself as a Motown tribute soulful enough to get Smokey Robinson himself to present them. With sharp suits, solid singing and more moves than U Haul, they dance in the aisles, they dance on the tables, they even get you to dance! Equally adept at covering the Temptations (“The Way You Do The Things You Do”), Supremes (“You Keep Me Hangin’ On”) and even Jackson 5 (“ABC”), the quartet is most showstopping when they sing a capella….

If you’re looking for a more home-grown rendition, Detroit, Michigan’s, own Jin-Jin Reeves leads Hitzville, a less slick but equally sincere Motown revue with two other female and four male singers down the street at the Planet Hollywood-adjacent Harmon Theatre (a.k.a. Krave). A woman who really knows how to sell a song, Jin-Jin and her crew cover many of the same classics with their own stopless style (though it’s better when they don’t try too hard to mimic), mixing in other soul artists like Aretha Franklin, Tina Turner, the O’Jays and Drifters

Jersey Boys (Courtesy: Kirvin Doak)

Though it’s obviously a more elaborate production with a real narrative, Jersey Boys at the Palazzo (transplanted from Broadway) is also at heart, a tribute to one of the‘60s biggest vocal groups, the Four Seasons. Within a fence-bound ever-changing set, the men who portray Frankie Valli, Bob Gaudio et al tell the group’s exhilarating and emotional story from all perspectives, while pulling off note-perfect recreations of the band’s unique harmonies and even instrumentations (all of the music is played live onstage) though hits like “Sherry,” “Walk Like A Man,” “Rag Doll” “Oh What A Night” and more. While mature themes and language make this show iffy for the pre-teen set, virtually anyone older will be blown away…

Divas of the desert: Las Vegas ladies sing!

Las Vegas hotels By E.C. Gladstone

Even though Mother’s Day has come and gone, the occasion inspired me to want to pay tribute to our many great female performers, young and old. Las Vegas may host the world’s most beautiful women, but it also has many of the most talented. If you want to see a Grand Dame put on a show, I can’t think of any place with more choices than the Las Vegas hotels. The list is always changing, but take a look at who’s on the boards these days…

Cher, Caesars Palace

Cher’s own self-styled career tribute is as much a Bob Mackie fashion exposition as it is a concert. “Don’t I look great in person?” the age-defying diva cracks. “It only took me five hours to get this way!” With a full troupe of tight dancers and aerialists backing her, Cher’s Colosseum show is clearly meant to be crowd-pleasing though it also includes more video than you might expect. Still, her retrospective duet with Sonny on “The Beat Goes On,” her equally effective takes on Pat Benatar’s “Love Is A Battlefield” and Thelma Houston’s “Don’t Leave Me This Way” are all pleasant surprises. Despite rumors, Cher is staying at Caesars at least through 2010

Music festivals make summer vacation rock

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009

Summer-vacations Summer vacation season is right around the corner, and nothing says summer like outdoor music festivals. Whether the music sounds better outside or the combination of fresh air and festival food just makes everything more fun, music festivals are popular from coast to coast. A handful of the biggest festivals are highlighted here to help you with your summer vacation planning.

Bonnaroo: Calling Bonnaroo a music festival is possibly the understatement of the year. The four-day event June 11-14 on a huge Manchester, Tennessee, farm invites people of all ages to camp on site and enjoy music, comedy and much more. There's a space that shows movies 24 hours a day, a market with artisans and national vendors, a beer tent where you can taste brews from around the country, and a kids area with games, sports and recycling art projects. All of this wrapped up in a mission of environmental sustainability. (There's even a community garden this year.) But if you really are looking for music on your summer vacation,  Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, Elvis Costello, Phish and Wilco are among the headliners. (Tip: Nashville is the closest airport, and the festival has organized shuttle service.)

Summerfest: More a marathon than a sprint, this Midwest favorite stretches over 11 days and features names like Bon Jovi, Keith Urban, Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson and Kid Rock. This festival's prime lakefront location in downtown Milwaukee and plentiful food vendors add to the atmosphere. A fireworks show opening night helps get things started. June 25-July 5.

Las Vegas hotels: Top 10 casino lounges

Tuesday, January 27th, 2009

Vegas-hotels1
By E.C. Gladstone

I don’t need to tell you that there’s no shortage of places
to get a drink in Las Vegas hotels — in fact, most every casino resort has
several options to choose from, any time of the day or night. But just as a
wine cooler is not the same as a handcrafted mojito, some bars and lounges are
a bit more worthy than others. Whether you’re looking for a business meeting
place, a low-key romantic room (note to Valentine’s Day procrastinators) or
just a stylish spot with no cover, no line and no attitude… these are the best
property picks. IMHO, anyway.

10) Rush Lounge, Golden Nugget: An almost Hollywood-worthy
stylish lounge in perhaps the least expected place. Frankie Moreno’s house band
is also reportedly among the best in town.

9) Tempo, Zen, Las Vegas Hilton: Inside the casino-side Tempo lounge
is an ultra-Mod escape you would never expect at the Hilton. Also have to give
a shout out to the vintage Benihana Village Zen lounge, which really is quite
relaxing.

8) Cleopatra’s Barge, Bradley Ogden lounge, Caesars Palace:
Despite several more modern options here, my heart belongs to Cleo’s vintage
kitsch
, complete with artificial smoke and cheesy lighting. The casino-side
lounge of Bradley Ogden’s A-list eatery is also a sweet spot.

7) Fontana, Sportsbook, Bellagio: The Fontana lounge not
only offers world-class entertainment, but also one of the best views of the
fountains
from its balcony. The Sportsbook bar is elegant enough to be suitable
for any occasion.

6) Liquidity, Tender Steak lounge, Luxor: Liquidity is a
cool mid-mod designed bar with rainfalls everywhere you turn, and DJs at peak
hours (try the “jaded mojito”). Right off the casino, Tender’s clubby, comfy
bar serves classic cocktails like Moscow Mules and Old Fashioneds. Done.

5) The lounges at Delmonico and Cut, Venetian / Palazzo: Two
restaurants win out here — Delmonico’s lounge has its own pianist during happy
hour, and you can order Emeril’s great apps. Cut, by Wolfgang Puck is the definition of mod luxe,
and also has a fantastic bar menu and handcrafted cocktails.

4) Parasol Up/Down, Wynn Las Vegas: Truly one of the property’s gems,
this split casino bar overlooks the Lake of Dreams in two linked but distinct
identities, so evocative of a mid-century international fantasy, you expect
Audrey Hepburn to glide in at any second (try the Viking martini or cucumber
& lavender mojito). New sister hotel Encore’s Eastside Lounge is a sweet escape, too.

Las-Vegas-hotels
3) The lounges at Koi, StripHouse, Planet Hollywood: While
the Heart bar on the casino floor has some intrigue and energy, I lean toward
the great lounges in restaurants Koi (a room which evokes the inside of an
oyster
–great saketinis) and StripHouse (a noir-style bar decorated with
vintage erotica). Both unique.

2) West Wing Bar, MGM Grand: The definition of hidden gem, MGM’s
West Wing Bar (beyond Centrifuge) is New York sleek and sexy (leather loungers
for two!) with a menu of caipirinha varieties. More accessible, Rouge sets a
high mark for an open-walled lounge. (try the Stoli Lychee)

1) eyecandy, Mandalay Bay: Virtually everything a lounge could
or should be–a cool dance floor with go-go platforms and side banquettes,
comfortable bars with original cocktails by master mixologist Tony Abou-Ganim
(try the Pineapple-Ginger Mojito, or “Pure Joy”) and a variety of private lounge
areas
too. Fantastic.

Honorable Mentions: Napoleon's and Eiffel Tower Restaurant
bar at Paris; Stir at Platinum, Rojo at Palms Place, and the Gaudi lounge at
Sunset Station (still the most improbably gorgeous casino center bar anywhere).
