Clubs and cabanas: Palms Casino Resorts' recipes for meeting other singles.

By Vince Font

Las Vegas is nothing if not wildly diverse. In fact, if you could look up “broad appeal” in the dictionary, the word “Vegas” would likely appear as its sole definition, and rightly so. Where else can you be guaranteed to find what you’re looking for regardless of who you are, where you’re from or when you were born? In truth, Las Vegas vacations can satisfy just about any quotient, whether that’s diversity, affordability or both. Here are three of the best deals in Las Vegas that cater to three uniquely distinct demographics: singles, sweethearts and seniors. (more…)

The lure of the Atlantic City Boardwalk: fresh air breaks between gambling. Credit: autiscy.

By Vince Font

If there’s anything that true gamblers find more important than getting the best odds, it’s finding the best casino in which to practice their passion. After all, being able to look around at glorious surroundings has a way of lessening the blow of losing your shirt, just as much as it has a way of accentuating the thrill of a comeback from the brink. In America, there are two gambling meccas: Las Vegas and Atlantic City. But if you have to choose between the two, which one’s better? Here’s a quick rundown on how Las Vegas vacations and Atlantic City vacations stack up. (more…)

Vegas: The ultimate bachelor/bachelorette party guide

Tuesday, June 8th, 2010

By E.C. Gladstone

There are many reasons Las Vegas hotels are among the world’s best vacation destinations. But for pre-wedding bachelor party and bachelorette party weekends, Vegas is virtually unparalleled. Still, like anything else, there are good choices and bad choices which can make all the difference in whether your celebration turns out memorable or mangled. Here’s my two cents:

Suites

Caesars Palace Rain Man Suite

Yes, every casino has one and two-bedroom suites — often the best option for a sleeping/party space — but  some resorts overtly discourage room parties, while others turn a blind eye and even promote them!

For bachelors, your best choices start with Hard Rock Hotel, Palms Casino Resort, and Planet Hollywood. At HRH, beyond the original Penthouse suite (with pool table, wet bar, bowling alley and pool table), there are killer suite options in both the new Paradise and HRH towers. Palms has its legendary Fantasy Suites (Half Court, Kingpin, G Suite, etc) and Sky Villas, which include VIP status all over the property; the best choice might be their Pool Bungalows — three two-floor suites with private jacuzzis, fireplaces, bars, and direct access/view of the pool deck. At Planet Hollywood, the Panorama, Mega and Apex suites are all underrated, swinging party pads with amazing views, cool décor and lots of TVs.

Bachelorettes would also enjoy many of the same — particularly the poolside suites in HRH’s Paradise tower, the Barbie Suite and Cabanas at Palms, and suites in the sleek modern Palms Place tower. Flamingo’s cute GO/Metro suites would be another fun choice.

Still, the ultimate at a something-for-everyone resort may be Caesars’ Forum Tower Emperor and Absolut Suites: The first is a semi-circular two-bedroom pad all focused on huge picture window, big flatscreen TV, surrounding couches, private dining alcove, pantry, with two big Jacuzzi tub bathrooms, all connected with Crestron touchscreen systems which integrate TV, DVD, CD stereo, ipod docks and lighting mode options. The latter, even more spacious, is a four-bedroom two-floor playground co-designed by the Absolut vodka company, with a dance floor living room and different “flavors” in every room, spa tubs and steam showers everywhere.

As a Lake Tahoe native, I’ve been lucky to grow up experiencing North America’s largest alpine lake straddling both Nevada and California. Best-known for its ski resorts, Lake Tahoe is also an extraordinarily beautiful summer vacation destination with an amazing 4th of July celebration. The 72-miles of lakeshore offer spellbinding scenery and rugged terrain, with almost perfect daytime temperatures and cool nights. If you’re looking for the perfect 4th of July vacation, there’s no more spectacular place to be than Tahoe’s Lights on the Lake celebration.

Vegas secret stays: Upgrading to all-star status

Monday, May 3rd, 2010

By E.C. Gladstone

Though you’d have a hard time finding a more democratic city than Las Vegas, the simple truth is, not all visitors to our Las Vegas hotels are created equal. Some do indeed get treated much, much better. Oh sure, everyone knows that big time gamblers get VIP status. But even those of us who are more moderate in our spending can find ways to feel like we’ve hit the big time. With Las Vegas hotel room rates still at the most competitive levels in years, it’s easier than ever to upgrade to exclusive club floors, suites and other semi-secret options.

Favorite Vegas secret stays

Wynn_Las_Vegas Encore at Wynn and Wynn Las Vegas: Both of these sister hotels have separate VIP entrances and registrations with private elevators leading to exclusive floors with subtle but significant details in the rooms. Between the two, I lean slightly towards the original Wynn tower suites with its rooms decorated in an updated Modern Regency palette, beds nothing short of exquisite, and marble-floored bathrooms with separate spa tub and shower (excellent water pressure, too), and every amenity imaginable. Overall, I’ve never experienced a room so elegant, ergonomic (in the truest sense) tasteful and comfortable. Tower suite guests also enjoy exclusive pool areas, with the nicest cabanas on the Strip.

Celebrate the Caribbean islands with festivals, events

When my husband and I visited Jamaica on a Caribbean vacation, we made a point of spending an entire day simply exploring by foot and by cab. We watched a local band perform, shopped at a farmer’s market, and ate jerk pork at a small restaurant populated by locals. We never felt crowded by other tourists.

Attending local events can really “spice up” a Caribbean islands vacation. Ever since our adventure, I tell any friend planning a Caribbean vacation to check out upcoming events for their destination.

Educational trips: Cooking with Las Vegas master chefs

Tuesday, April 6th, 2010

by E.C. Gladstone

While most visitors to Las Vegas Hotels don’t expect to learn much more than how to play craps or blackjack, they now have the chance to learn the tricks of the culinary trade from Sin City’s finest master chefs . At their signature Las Vegas restaurants within some of the most spectacular Las Vegas hotels, several master chefs are now offering creative cooking and dining opportunities, including cook-then-eat classes. As if the Vegas dining experience wasn’t fabulous enough, now it’s even more deliciously memorable than the extra inches to your waistline.

Pasta making at Las Vegas' Nove Italiano restaurant

Pasta making at Las Vegas' Nove Italiano restaurant

In the Palms at Nove Italiano–my favorite Italian restaurant in Vegas (see my post on Las Vegas’ Top 10 Italian Restaurants)–Executive Chef Geno Bernardo and his top chefs invite a small group into the kitchen on the last Saturday of every month. Bernardo demonstrates essentials like pressing pasta by hand, grinding sausage, and making ragu sauce, then invites his guests to an elegant five-course lunch of each recipe with wines to match. $75 per person.

Every few weeks, Scott Linquist, corporate chef of all Dos Caminos restaurants, visits the Las Vegas Dos Caminos in the Palazzo to conduct an intimate cooking demonstration in the rear of the dining room. Linquist manages to make it look easy and emphasizes ingredients as much as technique (much of which is surprisingly French-inspired). With assistance from his pastry chef, mixologists, and other staffers, he demonstrates varying bebidas, antojitos, platas y postres, and guests also get to make his famous guacamole recipe. The price includes an autographed copy of Linquist’s cookbook, and of course, a fantastic lunch. Next classes scheduled for May 8 and 9, $65 per person. (more…)

Las Vegas hotels

David Spade (Photo: Hard Rock Hotel)

With audiences from around the country and even the world, Las Vegas hotels have always been a great home for comics, who can play here more regularly than perhaps anywhere else in the world. A recent set by John Stewart at the Mirage reminded us just how great stand-up comedy can be, making you see everything and everyone around you in a different light, smiling at the absurdities of life, and even laughing a bit at ourselves. If you’re planning a Las Vegas vacation, or just looking for a good laugh, here’s a roundup of current and upcoming shows.

David Spade, Venetian

You know him from Saturday Night Live, Just Shoot Me, or movies like Tommy Boy and Joe Dirt, but returning to his stand-up roots, a (slightly) more maturing Spade riffs casually about relationships, growing older, Vegas absurdities and (of course) Hollywood. Good stuff.

Jay Leno, Mirage

After the huge Tonight Show era, it’s hard to remember that Leno was first one of our most consistent — and often edgy-stand up comedians. (more…)

Las Vegas hotels

CityCenter, the new giant on the Strip, may have its pros and cons in the competitive field of Las Vegas hotels, but one thing is for sure: it holds a treasure trove of incomparable dining experiences. There are so many that one leading critic in town thought the idea of summing them all up was practically impossible. Not me. Your tireless blogger has checked out nearly all the eateries in ARIA, Vdara, Crystals and Mandarin Oriental, and can tell which of the experiences foodies truly should not miss.

10. BarMasa/Shaboo, ARIA

The quality of fish is absolutely excellent at this outpost of New York’s fanciest sushi spot — but is it worth paying five times (at least) the price of what sushi would cost in many other top-notch Japanese restaurants in Las Vegas hotels? Only you, and your accountant, can answer that. (more…)

Ready, set, relax at new Las Vegas hotel spas

Las Vegas hotels

Several new Las Vegas hotels have opened since my last spa review (Top 10 spas), so I decided it was time for the difficult task of reviewing the new spas. Each unique in size, decor and treatment options, these luxurious spas all add something to the already impressive array of pampering and relaxation options in Vegas.

Reliquary, HRH at Hard Rock Hotel

Dramatically different, the Reliquary “water sanctuary & spa” takes designer Mark Neff’s gothic motifs to delicious extremes, centering on a coed Roman Bath that wouldn’t look out of place in Sherlock Holmes’ Victorian London. Locker rooms and the all-Cybex fitness area are more modern (check out the cool steam room lighting), with tall multi-option showers, plush fleece robes, thick Corinelli towels and other solid amenities. They even have iPod docks in all of the gorgeous treatment rooms — bring your own music if you want — and Tempurpedic memory foam tables. (more…)
