Family vacation

Pac Back

By Mark Verone

Family vacations can be exciting, relaxing — even educational — but they can also present some challenges. When it comes to getting through the airport with ease, entertaining kids on flights and packing enough (but not too much), it helps to have the right gear. My wife and I have taken a lot of family vacations with our kids, and we’ve learned a lot along the way. Here are some of the gadgets we’ve found make travel easier:

Pac Back: The FAA recommends securing your child in a car seat approved for air travel during your flight. But the FAA has no suggestions about how to carry that car seat on the long walk to the gate, while pushing your child in a stroller. The Pac Back car seat carrier enables an me to carry the car seat like a backpack, leaving my hands free for dispensing snacks and changing diapers. Without the Pac Back, my family of four might never have reached the gate, much less our destination. (more…)

Review of in-flight Wi-Fi from a first-timer

I am here

I am here

By John Banta

I’m off to visit my wife and in-laws in Wilmington, NC for the July 4th weekend and decided to try something new.

I’m writing this post from 30,000 feet aboard Delta Air Lines flight 1935 en route to Atlanta and must say, I am pretty impressed with the in-flight Internet access I am just now checking out for the first time.

After a quick registration process on a sign-up page and charging $9.95 to my credit card, I am now online for the duration of the flight. (more…)

AirTran plans in-flight Wi-Fi for all its planes

Wednesday, June 17th, 2009
Business travel By Joe Brancatelli

CONNECTIONS
AirTran Airways Logs on to In-flight Wireless: AirTran
Airways is equipping all of its aircraft for in-flight Wi-Fi. It claimed
the entire fleet of 136 Boeing 737s and 717s will be wired with
Aircell's Gogo Inflight service by the end of July, a record for speedy
installation.

  • Delta Air Lines, which began wiring its domestic fleet
last fall, has only reached the 150-plane plateau in mid-May.
  • American
    Airlines
, which wired its first planes early last year, has fewer than
    25 aircraft
    equipped with W-iFi.
  • It's taken almost a year for Virgin
    America
to have all of its 28 planes wired. But notice what you haven't heard
from any of these carriers? Whether travelers are actually using the
system on the planes and paying the $8-$13 fee charged for each flight.
As you'll recall, an attempt to wire international aircraft for
Internet failed miserably earlier in the decade because passengers
refused to pay up to $30 a flight for access to Boeing's Connexion
    service.

iPhone games to keep kids busy on the road

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009

IPhone By Sam Chapnick

Got a kid, an iPhone and a family vacation planned?

These are our family's favorite iPhone games for keeping kids amused on the road (we love them all, they are not in order of love):

I'm excluding any social media or games requiring an Internet connection.

All Ages:

Sketchr: Basically etch-a-sketch for the iPhone. At first it is a bit awkward to tilt the iPhone to get it to draw, but after learning to move it gently, this is a blast! Especially for nostalgic Gen Xers. Ahem…

Subway Lite: Another one of my absolute favorites, this taps into several developmental skills while still being fun and challenging for all ages — including adults. Like a slide puzzle, the goal is to try to get the subway car "home" by moving it along the track blocked by other vehicles.

Free PicPu: "A slide puzzle, oh I'm too old for those." That was my initial thought until I played this game. Using real photographs instead of drawings, it's hard to figure out exactly what goes where while getting them strategically into place. A great one to while away a delay in the airport or on the runway.

And the Klipsch Image X10 headphones winner is …

Wednesday, November 5th, 2008

Imagex10headphones
Congratulations, Jane Hudson — you’ve won yourself a pair of Klipsch headphones.

Last month, we asked travelers to share their tales about when they could have really benefited from a pair of award-winning Klipsch Image X10 headphones.

Although she had some serious competition, Hudson, of Connecticut, came through with what our judges thought was the most clever, compelling account.

Here’s her story:

GOWF. My oh-could-I-have-used-those-headphones story is all about GOWF. Well, that’s what it sounded like when the guy in the seat. across the aisle on the flight in from Hilton Head started talking. Bleating, actually, at the guy sitting right next to him. But anyone within a dozen rows could hear. "GOWF!" he said. "Ah love GOWF! Nothin’ like a beautiful day out playing GOWF. Ah grab mah GOWF clubs and head over to the GOWF course. Ah played yesterday. It was great, startin’ on the first hole with a 282-yard drive. It was a little to the left. … And on he continued, hole by hole, drive by drive, putt by putt until all 18 holes had been fully — and very loudly — chronicled.

Bennett Honson of Chicago was among the contenders. Here’s his tale:

"One and two and three and four," she chanted as she combined rapid hand clapping, knee slapping and finger snapping. My friend was practicing rhythm for a jazz guitar class during our three hour red-eye flight to San Francisco. The surrounding passengers glared and sighed conspicuously — unsure of what my friend was practicing but certain they didn’t like it. If the attendant hadn’t carefully instructed me to place my carry on baggage underneath the seat I would have immediately crawled there myself. If only I had had a pair of the world’s smallest, lightest and most comfortable headphones from Klipsch, I could have shut my eyes, claimed ignorance and traveled in peace.

Thanks to everyone for contributing.

Top iPhone apps for travelers

Friday, October 3rd, 2008

Iphonetravel
By Samantha Chapnick

Programmers and accessory makers have had a few months now to strut their newly pimped iPhone stuff. After having a ball testing them all, I finally had to sit down and write up my favorite choices for travelers who want to enhance their iPhone experience, become more productive or just bring procrastination to new heights.

FUNCTIONAL

First we’ll look at a few small apps that make everyday tasks easier.

Toodledo

Toodledo is a to-do list maker’s dream come true. It completely eliminates any excuse for not knowing what you had to do, whether you are at your desk or on the road. With almost every to-do list feature anyone could need (including folders, prioritization, multiple viewing options, a notebook, goal-setting, and even a guilt-inducing productivity analysis feature) AND three easy ways to synch on the road, it’s the most comprehensive, simple and free tool out there. With a pro subscription (less than $50 a year) you can collaborate with others, keep completed tasks accessible forever and have an encrypted connection. It also seamlessly hooks into iCal, Google Calendar, Jott, Twitter and other common programs.

I selected Toodledo not only because of its full feature set, but because of the flexibility of accessing it from your iPhone. You can simply go to the mobile version of the site. If you prefer not to have to be online (especially useful for fliers), download Appigo’s ToDo program.

Easy Task Manager

If you want a simpler task manager with all the basic features and no collaboration with others, Easy Task Manager is an easy choice. It is a full-featured to-do list with nothing extraneous — just tasks, prioritization, folders and notes.

Stanza

Stanza is a simple way to read great books and your own documents (all free) from your iPhone. At its most basic level, this fabulous program makes it easy to read books on your iPhone. While it doesn’t have the special screen contrast features of a specialized eReader like the Sony or Kindle, its scroll-free design, intelligent navigation and Open eBook standard makes it by far the best iPhone reader there is.

For business travelers who regularly read docs on the road, it offers another major benefit: By using the app in conjunction with the desktop version, almost any document can be converted to the ebook format. Translation: those cumbersome reports and pdfs suddenly become very iPhone friendly.

ABOVE AND BEYOND

These apps make such good use of the iPhone’s essence that they extend it beyond its basic uses. This is really where the device and apps shine.

Urban Spoon

Saying Urban Spoon is the way coolest, most awesome app I’ve used on the iPhone would really sum it up if I weren’t getting paid to write these reviews.

Imagine using a slot machine to decide where to go to eat and you basically understand Urban Spoon. Upon launching, it automatically detects your location (city) or you can enter it manually. Three columns appear: neighborhood, type of cuisine (e.g. Italian, Mexican) and budget ($ to $$$$). Under each is a lock, click any combination or all and shake the iPhone. The slots will spin (with an accompanying sound effect), and a suggested restaurant will appear along with a rating from other Urban Spoon users. Click the name and you’ll get details including full reviews from both popular media (e.g. New York Times) and users.

Beyond being one of the most unique interfaces out there, the content is actually very good. It almost always comes up with restaurants we like, and more importantly doesn’t seem to have any glaring gaps. It even helped us find two restaurants in Charleston, South Carolina that we didn’t know existed.
