Free things to do in Washington, D.C.
Friday, August 14th, 2009

By Samantha Chapnick
I love Washington, D.C. It’s one of the few major cities where you can live the high life for less, thanks to the affordably priced Washington, D.C. hotels, free Smithsonian museums, and plethora of civic sites. Here are my favorite ways to do D.C. for free, or almost free.
I’m assuming you already know that most of the major museums (e.g. Natural History, Air & Space Museum, National Zoo) are free and open to the public. So let’s get beyond them to the lesser known spots.

University of South Florida Contemporary Art Museum

Free beer, beaches and baboons. What more could you ask for on a Florida vacation? Here are my top picks for free (or almost free) things to do in Tampa.
ARTS & CULTURE
University of South Florida Contemporary Art Museum (FREE) — Recently honored with a substantial Andy Warhol Foundation Gift of 150 photos produced by the artist, this museum curates exhibits more about stimulating dialog than having pretty pictures. Come to see cutting-edge exhibits from lesser known artists.

Delta cuts fares on some New York shuttle routes
Thursday, June 11th, 2009
AIRPORT REPORT
Fliers Can Eat for a Fin in Two Big Airports: Philadelphia and New York/LaGuardia now have $5 menu-item programs
at some of their food-service outlets. About 50 restaurants are
offering specials under the banner of Wow! $5 Chow! The grub ranges
from a chicken sandwich and a large beverage at Chick-Fil-A in
Philadelphia to dessert and coffee at Todd English's Figs in LaGuardia.
- Fighting a steep decline of passengers on its Air Shuttle routes between New York/LaGuardia, Boston and Washington/National, Delta Air Lines has cut some one-way fares as low as $129.
- The Northwest Airlines name and brand has disappeared at two more airports — Albany, New York, and Knoxville, Tennessee — and Northwest flights have been moved to Delta Air Lines gates.
- Marriott has opened a 187-room Courtyard hotel in Toulouse, France. It is located about three miles from the airport and the home of Airbus.
- British Airways says it will launch flights to Las Vegas
from London/Heathrow beginning on October 25. BA will use Boeing 777s
configured with business-class, premium-economy and coach cabins.
Washington, D.C.’s freebies provide fun for family vacations
Wednesday, June 10th, 2009I've gotten to know Washington D.C. as a tourist, as a political junkie and wannabe journalist during college, and as a resident, and one truth has become clear to me: Washington, D.C., is “the” place for recession-proof family vacations. If you have a family and want to travel during these tough economic times, there is no better place to visit for the day or for the week. Sure, getting here will cost you, and if you don’t have family nearby, there might be a hotel bill too, but once here, there are plenty of free things to do.
There are plenty of reasons to love D.C. and its surrounding communities. Let me give you a few of my favorites while considering a trip here.
Museums
I didn’t realize growing up that most museums outside of Washington and around the country actually charge you money to visit their collections. Culture in other cities can come at a steep price, but in Washington, your federal taxes take care of the entry fees and the privilege of seeing some of the greatest artifacts and artistic collections ever assembled under one roof. The best known Washington museum, The Smithsonian Institution, is more than just “a” singular museum — it's actually the world's largest museum complex and research organization, composed of 19 museums, 9 research centers, and the National Zoo — and it's all free. Take a look at some of my favorite Smithsonian offerings:
- National Air & Space Museum: Featuring spaceships, planes, rockets and missiles, the Air and Space Museum will send you in orbit.
Caribbean vacation bargains
Monday, June 8th, 2009I get out to the Caribbean a fair bit, admittedly. But I haven’t even come close to fully discovering its myriad island nations and tropical hideaways. So when I started compiling this list of hints to help you save money and increase fun factor on your next Caribbean vacation, I turned to my friends and colleagues. And they in turn delivered secret spots and local favorites all over the Caribbean. Check out these budget-friendly and fabulous finds, and you may decide that the tropics can fit into your summer plans after all.
Barbados has released one “wow”-worthy travel deal after another, all year long. Hotel chains from the Divi (Divi Southwinds Beach Resort or Divi Heritage) to the Hilton Barbados to the uber-posh Fairmont Royal Pavillion are currently running great rates on Orbitz. But to eat and drink on the cheap, skip the hotel restaurant and head to a local hangout like Fisherman’s Pub or Oistin's Fish Fry, where a full plate of flyish fish & cou cou (no that is not a typo; it is their national dish) and cold island-brewed Banks beer will run you around $10 US. If you plan to make a grownups' night of it, hit up the James Moore Bar — a full bottle of Mount Gay Rum & Coca-Cola costs about US $5.
