Top hotels for family vacations in Myrtle Beach

Family vacation By Robin Gallagher

I love family vacations at Myrtle Beach because there are endless things to keep my kids busy: miniature golf, arcades, amusements, indoor play areas, and water parks to mention a few … oh yeah, and the beach! There are also beautiful golf courses where my husband can sneak away, and I can hit the Tanger Outlets for upscale shopping at discount prices in the evenings.

In addition to being jam-packed with activities for adults and kids, the area is affordable for families who want to spend quality time together with out spending a ton of money. Here are some of my favorite places to eat, sleep and play on the cheap:

Luxury Atlanta hotel opens

HOTEL HOT SHEET

The New Hotels Keep on Coming: With hotel occupancy plummeting and room rates falling precipitously, logic would lead you to believe that the hotel industry would stop opening hotels. But that's not how it works in lodging, when projects put into the pipeline years ago keep gushing out. So get out your scorecard and make note of this week's new openings. … There are four new Hilton Garden Inn properties: a 224-room Hilton Garden Inn at Toronto/Pearson Airport; a 140-room hotel in Ridgefield Park, New Jersey; a 105-room outlet in Tifton, Georgia; and a 115-room hotel in Fontana, California. … There are two new Courtyard by Marriott properties: a 218-room hotel adjacent to the New York Avenue Metro Station in Washington and a 92-room hotel in Denton, Texas. … Meanwhile, InterContinental has opened a 100-room Candlewood Suites in Manassas, Virginia, and a 100-room Hotel Indigo in San Jose, Costa Rica. …. The 125-room boutique Moonrise Hotel has opened in St. Louis. The hotel has a rooftop terrace; introductory rates start at $159 a night. … Just what we needed: another luxury hotel. This one is the 151-room St. Regis Atlanta in Atlanta's Buckhead neighborhood. … And not even Brighton, the famed if faded British seaside resort, can resist the lure of the chain hotels. Two of the city's best known properties now sport brand flags. The Royal York is a Radisson and the Lansdowne Place is now a Park Inn.

Free, discounted activities for your Fort Lauderdale vacation

Fort lauderdale hotels By Samantha Chapnick

My family still hasn't found a Fort Lauderdale hotel or Miami hotel, for that matter, that's free. But combine these fabulous freebies with the cheap airfare being offered and you'll have a Florida vacation even Sam Walton, of Wal-Mart fame, would condone.

NATURE
Fort Lauderdale is home to many small nature enclaves and parks, all free and all wonderful. My family's four favorites are

1. John Lloyd Beach State Park: One of the best ways to live the cheap life luxuriously is to stay at one of those budget Fort Lauderdale hotels way off the beach, and then spend your days in this park with several miles of tranquil beach, mangrove, cafes and playgrounds. With a $5 car entry fee (or with a $78 yearly pass you get in free), that beats the resort fee at most ocean-front hotels any day. Showers, picnic tables and restrooms are all available.

2. Secret Woods Nature Center: Appropriately named, this teeny sanctuary is a few feet from the airport, making this perhaps the world's most peaceful — and noisiest — butterfly garden in the world at the same time. When there is no plane flying overhead, all you can hear are the birds and wind in the trees.

Skiing, scenery in Banff and Lake Louise

Tuesday, May 26th, 2009

By Vicky Alkhovsky

When looking for a good spring ski vacation destination, the Canadian Rockies quickly came to mind. I’d always wanted see Banff, so staying at Lake Louise and skiing nearby was the natural choice.

Though the traditional blues and greens of Lake Louise are spectacular, there is a grace and serenity to the quiet, snowy landscape visible from the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise at the base of the lake.

Sights along 1A in Banff National Park speak for themselves in the language of breathtaking beauty. Several inches of fresh snow enhanced every view. Check out my photos:

Summer vacation in Chicago: Fabulous festivals

Monday, May 25th, 2009

Chicago hotel Maybe it's the joy of surviving yet another long winter, or maybe people in Chicago just love an excuse for food and fun… Regardless, once the weather gets warm, the Windy City heats up with tons of summer festivals. Music, food, art, ethnic heritage — you name it, it's here, making Chicago a great choice for a summer vacation.

Most of the biggies highlighted here are downtown in and around Grant Park, so you can book a Chicago hotel in the Loop/Millennium Park/Grant Park area and walk. If you want to experience summer in Chicago like a local, though, hop on the El and try one of the many neighborhood fests. Retro on Roscoe is a fun event in a cute Northside neighborhood, Lakeview Music Fest features food and music in the shadow of Wrigley Field, and there are many others.

57th Street Art Fair June 5-6: Painting, sculpture, photography, jewelery, ceramics and much more. Billed as Chicago's oldest juried art fair, this one happens in President Obama's old neighborhood (Hyde Park). FREE.

Chicago Gospel Music Festival June 6-7: The first of many multi-day concert events held in Grant Park throughout the summer, this one features more than 50 acts on three stages. FREE.

Chicago Blues Festival June 12-14: Same idea as Gospel Fest, with a different genre. Eddie C. Campbell, Bettye LaVette and Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings are the headliners. FREE.

Three tips for a successful camping family vacation

Family-vacation-2 By Alistair Wearmouth

My wife’s first comment after I returned from my first solo camping trip with our then three-year-old was, “You look exhausted.” Which was absolutely true. But beyond my sorry physical state after one night (yes, just one!), both of us couldn’t have been happier.

Sure, taking younger kids camping is a ton of hard work — imagine setting up camp, getting a fire going, making sure the kids don’t jump in the fire, getting everyone fed, exploring the woods, breaking down camp… you get the idea — but it’s easily one of life’s more rewarding experiences (in my opinion). For those looking to plan a similar family vacation, here are a few tips to make your trip into the great yonder a little less backbreaking:

HOTEL HOT SHEET
Recession Be Damned. The New Properties Keep Opening: The number of new hotels opening would be overwhelming even if the economy were still roaring along. Now it just seems, well, chaotic. But here we go.

  • Hilton has opened a new 175-suite Embassy Suites in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota, and a 135-room Hilton Garden Inn in Suffolk, Virginia.
  • Marriott has opened a 118-room Fairfield Inn in Schertz, in suburban San Antonio.
  • Starwood has opened side-by-side properties in Arundel Mills, Maryland. One is a 147-room Element and the other is a 142-room Aloft hotel. It has also added a 91-room W Hotel in Doha, Qatar.
  • Overseas, citizenM, a prefab, high-tech hotel concept, has opened its second property. The 215-room hotel in Amsterdam's financial district complements the original citizenM, located within walking distance of the passenger terminals at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport.
  • Kempinski has opened a 98-room lakefront resort in the High Tatras Mountains of Slovakia.
  • Marriott has opened a 118-room Renaissance hotel in Paris near the Eiffel Tower.

Colorado vacation offers family-friendly adventure

Thursday, May 21st, 2009

Family-vacation-1 By Monica Randle

Our family vacation last summer was a trip to the mountains of Colorado. My son was 2.5 at the time, and although we knew he wouldn’t be able to participate in most of the traditional mountain activities, we were determined to find kid-friendly adventures we could all enjoy. At first I thought the modifications to our trip would have to be extreme, but we soon found out that there are a plenty of Colorado adventures that suit parents and kids alike.

During our stay out West, we rented a condo in Vail that provided easy walking access to the city center. In the city center we were able to rent bikes to ride around town as well as take trips up the ski lift to check out the view from Vail Mountain. Although our home base was Vail, we took many road trips to visit other areas of the state.

  • Canon City: We rode the Royal Gorge Route Railroad from Canon City (about 3 hours from Vail) for a 2-hour round-trip ride to see this beautiful gorge looking up from the railroad track that runs along the river.

Food festivals add spice to summer vacation

Summer vacation By Lena Katz

From sea to shining sea, America’s getting ready to celebrate all that tastes great this summer. Whether you’re in the market for a Hawaii vacation, an East Coast summer home or a quick family-friendly hop to a Tampa hotel, an awesome array of food festivals will add extra flavor to your holiday. Here are my top 10 picks for 2009.

In the Pacific Northwest, Bite of Oregon August 7-9 showcases organic/sustainable produce, great seafood, and craft beer — the latter in the brand-new Oregon Brewed Craft  Beer Garden. And may we just say…it’s about time? Oenophiles note, Oregon’s Willamette Valley wine region may well be the wine snobs’ next “it” place — so don’t just sip, take notes!

Down south, the LA Wine Fest June 6-7 showcases primarily California Central Coast and Napa wineries, with contingents from the Loire Valley and Australia, as well as a number of boutique-label tequilas. In keeping with Los Angeles “get ready for your closeup” mentality, the festival includes “lifestyles” vendors like Italian gastronomy site AcademiaBarilla.com, but very little in the way of actual food.
