Purfect location for Michigan Ave shopping, 1 block from Hancock tower and Water Tower Place. Also 1 block from Rush street funky shopping, restaurants and clubs...We ate at Hugos Frog bar on Rush Street, very good. Also in past, Bistro 110 is about 2 blocks away near Michigan Ave-very good.

Excellent overnight trip. Hotel was very nice-a small gem. One block from North Michigan Ave and one block from Rush Street ... puts you right in the Middle of shopping, restaurants and night clubs. We didn't try the Restaurant connecting to the Hotel or the room service. Only thing I wish they had coffee makers in the room--We drink lots of coffee. They due however offer free coffee in the morning in the hotel bar/lounge-which by the way is beautiful. The room was very nice-medium size, well decorated. The bathroom must have been recently updated---the tile work was simply beautiful. We would definitely stay there again. Staff was very warm and friendly. Paid $119 nite/good deal.

We spent most of our time out with family or at meetings so we were not looking for hotel amenities. They were renovating the ... air conditioning system so there was plastic covering in the halls and some noise at times, but we had such a bargain price I wouldn't complain about that.

We booked the trip several weeks in advance, but when we arrived at the hotel were informed there were "no vacancies." They ... arranged a "complimentary" stay at their sister 1-star hotel but we never received the refund that was promised. Four months and several letters later, still no refund . . . don't risk it!

Can't beat this historic hotel less than a block from the Mag Mile. Very friendly and courteous staff. My room wasn't ready ... when I arrived at 10:30am but they took care of my luggage and called me on my cell as soon as the room was ready. Though the room was small, it was pleasant, clean and had all the amenities I could have wanted. Will certainly go back!

We purchased the "GO Chicago" card and enjoyed a tour of North Chicago, the Museum of History, and the Architecture boat ... tour. We walked for miles in this beautiful clean city, where everyone, particularly the woman at the tours office, was friendly and helpful. The parks, the Marine Pier, the Magnificent Mile, and the eating establishments, especially the "Grand Lux Cafe", were all pleasant surprises. That Lakeshore is a thing of beauty. Thank you, Chicago.

Repairs incomplete
Chicago weekender Nov 1, 2009
The heating system was not working in our room. When we called the front desk to ask for another room, the person sent an ... "engineer" to fix the problem. Shortly after he "fixed" the system (he shut it off) it leaked and the carpet was soaked. We asked for another room and were told that they would send someone again. We finally got another room, with attitude from the front desk staff. The concierge was most helpful in recommending a wonderful restaurant for brunch. Only way to get ice was to call room service.

Buy a CTA pass good on CTA trains and busses. Also, stop at one of the nearby Walgreen drugstores to buy snacks and pop, otherwise you are at the mercy of the refrigerator in your room.

If you plan on going to Gino's East for pizza (famous in Chicago and right around the corner) tell the concierge first. She gave us a pass that let us bypass the hour and a half wait and go straight to a table just because we were guests at the Whitehall! And it turned out we got a free appetizer with the pass. Pretty good deal fro just staying somewhere and the pizza was really really good!
