Dishonest Front Desk Clerks
experienced traveler Oct 26, 2009
The hotel does not have its complete name on the building making it a little difficult to find. I am unsure how the mistake ... was made (either by me or them) but I had 2 rooms reserved for 4 people for 2 nights at this hotel. The rooms reserved were Single rooms, which can only be used for 1 person. When I arrived to the front desk I asked to pay for an upgrade to larger rooms. The front desk clerks informed me it would be impossible, because they were 100% full for the night. During the check in process The clerks realized that our group of four would not fit in the rooms we reserved and the only way to correct the situation was to sell us another room. The hotel provided a double room for a PREMIUM price. I asked how this room became available now, when just five minutes ago they were 100% full. The clerk said they had a last minute cancellation. I have a hard time believing this story. The night was not terrific. The windows and walls are very very thin. We did not get much rest at all. The guests in other rooms, people walking down the hall and street noise was enough to wake us up on a frequent basis. The morning was not much better. When I say the walls are thin I mean they are paper thin. When the person next door was in the shower it sounded like they were in my shower. Everyone in our group had similiar complaints about the noise. Again we asked the front desk to pay for a larger second room and drop the 2 single rooms, they declined telling us they could only provide the same 3 rooms for our second night. I ended up going to a internet cafe to check for available rooms at other hotels so, we could drop our PREMIUM price double room and found this hotel online with available double rooms. When I presented this information to the front desk they told me they are unsure why they were showing availability. We ended up cancelling the third room that night and found a better deal somewhere else. I feel like the front desk clerks were not helpful or respectful of our situation. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone. On a positive note the rooms were neat and mostly clean.

Nice small room in the new annex.
Tom the World Traveler Oct 22, 2009
We were put into the new annex which is very quiet indeed, but you have to ask the desk clerk to buzz you through the main ... door which was an annoyance, your magnetic key will work for the back door. It was a pink tiled room, nicely appointed but small by American standards, they give you one little piece of soap that you must transport into the shower with you and two pillows for 2 people period, no room clock and in room wi fi is outrageously priced, the staff were professional but not really friendly. Free Wi Fi in the loby, the location of this hotel can not be beat,I walked out and to the left and there was the cathedral and square and orchestra music playing at two of the square resteraunts, It blew me away, their breakfast buffet is absolutely fabulous served in a beautiful room probably the best part of staying at this hotel. We had no view what so ever which I didn't care about anyway, why pay a hundred or 2 hundred extra. You will have your fill of Gondolas which are priced at 80 Euros or about 120 dollars for a 40 minute ride. I said no thanks, and around San Marco it is like a train of gondolas, try up by the Rialto bridge if that is what floats your boat, no pun intended.
Traveler type: Couples
The best resteraunts require reservations but if you show up at 7 pm when they open they will take you usually, Italians eat late at 8 or 9 PM, we had a great meal up by the Rialto Bridge outside on the Grand Canal, the rest. was Tratoria Tre Spiedi the food at most Resteraunts will nock your socks off. It is good.

Great Location on Piazza San Marco!
riccibru Jul 21, 2009
The hotel is next to Piazza San Marco. Great location. We had 2 rooms located in the new annex. The room were recently ... renovated, tey were very clean. The A/C was very good. We had 3 day vaporetto (boat Bus) passes, which we got when we took the vaparetto near the train station. The vaporetto line stops are alog Piazza San Marco. We used the vaporetto to go: up & down Grand Canal, Murano, Burano, Rialto bridge, and anytime we got lost we found Gran Canal and took the boat back to piazza San Marco. We visted, Sam Marco Basilica % museum, The Dodge palace & museum, went up San Marco Bell tower. Rialto bridge, Santa Maria Gloriasa dei Frari Church. We took many walks and visited many other churches. In Murano se visited, the glass museum, the church nearby, glass blowing exebition, shopped and had a great seafood luch at a local trattoria.

It was okay. The location was great. The room that we stayed in was small. Only one drawer to put clothes in, had to have ... mine in the luggage the whole time. Bathroom shower was really small.. I barely fit and Im petite compared to my husband. Staff in the lobby was sometimes friendly. Breakfast could have been better or had some variety to it. Bed was hard and stiff. Do not open windows.. people are loud outside. If you only care about sleep and showering, then get this hotel, if you want to something more comfortable then get a better hotel.

I do not recommend this hotel to anyone. The staff is extremely uncooperative - they act like they are doing you a favor... ... The elevator dates back to 1950's and it doesnt stop in any specific floor. We were 11 and we had to carry our bags up and down the stairs since the elevator stops in the 1/2's floor (complicated) I was sooo excited because of the pictures and I had seen it in the background of a TV show on cruises from Royal Caribbean (a couple getting a Gondola in front) The only positive thing is the location, but there are plenty of other choices around St. Marks Piazza. Our group had 5 rooms and ages ranged from 14 to 70 yrs and we all agreed, no way we will recommend this to anyone, even our worst enemy

Hotel Cavalletto Experience
Ruel Jun 11, 2009
PROS: Rooms for 3 and 2 are very large and can seemed to accommodate extra people. However, they won't allow it even though ... we offered to pay extra. we had to get another room for the 4th person. So for 2 families with 4 members each, we find it cheaper to get 2 rooms for 3 and one double.. and let one kid from each family share the double room. So for large family(ies), I suggest to plan on how to make the best of manipulating number-of-people-per-room vs dollar-value, then just do your own room assignments when you get your keys. Rooms for 2 are of decent size. Passports are required when checking in -- so dont expect to be able to sneak in an extra person to save some EURos. Bathrooms are nice and clean; water is abundant and soft. The location is very close to St. Marcs square, just few steps away from the main square. Many small decent restaurant around the area (tho not cheap). Close to many fine shopping stores. The hotel is close to the main pier for tour-ferries,water-taxis,shuttle-boats, and etc. Walking distance to the Grand Canal and REALTO bridge area (10-15 mins) where other restaurants and stores are located. You wont get lost if you don't miss the signs and directions (back and forth) to Realto/Grand Canal and St. Marcs square; directions are posted on building walls along inner-street intersections. Hotel/Airport Taxi: Water-taxi can be called from the hotel and boarded on the side of the hotel; no need to walk to the main pier (it is like calling a land taxi cab and be waiting for you in front of the hotel within 5 - 10 mins). At Cavalletto, the water-taxi will be waiting for you by the launch-dock which is just about 15 steps from front desk area - very convenient but different experience. Water-taxi to the airport is about 100 EUR per taxi, (not per person) -- extra charge for those with large luggages. We paid 140.00 EUR for 6 people with 8 large check-in luggages and 6 hand-carries. WARNING: Water-taxi traffic to the airport could be heavy if you will be flying out by mid or late afternoon. Unloading luggages when you get to the airport dock could take time for each taxi. So, planned to get to the airport as early as possible. Remember no cars in inner Venice so your only option is water-taxi to the airport or to the nearest train or land-transportaion depot. Breakfast is decent and included. BRING CONVERTERS FOR THOSE WITH LAPTOPS or other US-made electronic gadgets -- plug-converters are available for 10.00 EUR deposit and refundable. Warning: their converters can't be used for the US standard 2-prongs-with-one-large-prong plugs, but will work with 2-same-size-prongs; if you have US-3-prong-plugs, then might as well bring your own converter (US-to-EUR-3-round-parallel-prongs.) Free Wi-Fi internet connections. GONDOLA RIDE: Better to buy your condola tickets from the hotel desk so not to be hassled with bargaining with the condola operators; and so you will be picked up from the hotel-launch-dock instead of falling in line along the public launch-dock. Standard rate is 100 EUR "per gondola" (30-45 mins) and can accommodate up to 6 passangers (=16.66 EUR per person) CON: Elevators don't stop on every floor, so some might have to get-off the elevator and drag/pull/roll-down their luggages to their floor (about 3-4 steps down/up.) Elevator is so small - 6 people max. They provide shampoo but no conditioner. Some rooms have the old-venician setups so door locks are still using the old-key-hole type locks which is very inconvenient for those so used to the slide-card-type keys. However, some rooms are using the modern slide-card keys tho. Corridors are narrow; but remember, most buildings in Venice were made many years ago and just renovated to house hotels and other modern stuff. You will experience both the venician and modern atmosphere in this hotel; they really put good efforts to bring the western convenience into an old-setting. Overall: This is a Best Western hotel. And ...

Lots of nice dining places around the St. Marcs square which is only about 100 feet away. Then got to the Realto Bridge area for dining experience along the grand canal. The grand canal/realto bridge is just about 10-15 mins walk from Hotel Cavalleto. You will see lots of interesting sights along the way. You will experience to walk the hidden old streets of Venice, cross the small bridges that connect the islands (that comprises Venice); and see the hidden small businesses, stores, and old churches along the way. You can't get lost as long as you follow the signs that will lead you to Realto Bridge and back to St. Marcs square. San Marco Hotel Cavalletto review
NPG Jun 4, 2009
The hotel was okay, rooms were a bit small, but well appointed. The staff was pretty mixed. Some were really good - the ... bartender / night guard was excellent; however, when I arrived there was an extremely surly young guy with a chin-strap beard there to (un)welcome us to the hotel. There was an issue with my room at first, but the hotel was very accomodating to quickly move me into a room that was satisfactory. The overall experience was in-line with the mid-range price we paid.
