This is a very good property located away from other resorts. The beach is blocked at both sides of the resort. After a few ... days we started going to the Riu Cancun to eat as the buffets were much better. The Riu Caribe has 3 restaurants that take reservations. You have to make your request starting at 7 am. They have many tables at each restaurant but take limited reservations. We ate at the Mexican restaurant and there were only 5 tables being used out of probably 50 yet they tell people they are full. I wonder if they base how many people to let into the restaurants on how full the hotel is. The only brand name liquor I saw was Jim Beam and Bicardi Rum. Everything else was off brands.

Maybe its just me being hotel snobby. The rooms smelled like a old wooden cabinets, bed hard as a brick, and my friends ... toilets didnt flush. Food was buffet style so you did have some good stuff but not to die for. The asian resturant you need to make a reservation for was worse than chinese take out but the mexican resturant the food was good. If you are a picky eater like myself this is not the place to stay. The up side is there is a 24 hour bar open so you can always have a drink. Make sure you eat before dinner is cut off because your only chice of food in the middle of the night is a cold mystery meat burger and nachos. If you are looking for a quiet resort to bum around and dont plan on much partying then this is not the place for you.Upgrade stay at the RIU Cancun.

If you plan on going to Isla Mujeres take the ferry in the Cancun Downtown to the right from the hotel. It is cheaper and hours are longer.

NJ Oct 27, 2009
we stayed at the Riu Caribe for a week and our experience was pleasant throughout. none of our things got stolen (which we ... heard was a huge problem in many other hotels in Cancun) and all of the employees were friendly. the food was pretty good although a little bland, and the mixed drinks were on the weaker side but you can get as many as you'd like so it doesn't matter much anyway. our room was clean and very nice, although the bed was a bit hard. the pool was very warm especially after mid-day but it was certainly a relief from the sun. as far as the hotel itself, everything is open air except for the rooms which we appreciated but some may disagree. all in all a great vacation, and a great value.

Great hotel, but lousy Asian rest.
Carol D. W. Oct 14, 2009
I took this vacation because I was in much need of some stress free time. The hotel turned out to be better than what I ... expected. I understand a lot of people didn't like the lobby because it didn't have central air but I really didn't care or noone should either. YOUR ON VACATION! I was looking forward to working out but the fitness center was very ugly and outdated. That was a big disappointment. The restaurants that are inside the hotel were o.k. The one that is always open was great but the Asian restaurant was horrible. I ended up walking out and just going to the other one that doesn't need reservations. Other than that, I had a great time. The rooms were very clean, the staff was nice, the pool was great. And most importantly, the ocean view was beautiful. I plan on visiting Cancun every year so I obviously want to stay in different hotels but I wouldn't mind staying in this one again. We stayed at the GR Solaris in April and I probably like that one more but this one was really close to the shops and night life.

Lisa Oct 13, 2009
We thought the hotel was very clean and the views from the room were beautiful, we could see the pool and the ocean. The ... food was plentiful, and mostly buffet style. The service was remarkable. My husband would've preferred the speciality dinners to be served, however the Japanese Restaurant was buffet style, which for the price we payed for the hotel, air, and everything all inclusive, you really can't complain. The beach was unbelievable and huge, as well as the pool. We mainly stayed at the resort and went from the beach to the pool. The weather was fantastic and sunny. I would go back in a heartbeat. I would give it a five, however, the dining options at the Palace's are very hard to be, but then again, you pay more.

I surprised my boyfriend with this trip after I had just come back from an awesome stay at the Barceló Tucancun expecting to ... get about the same experience. I found a good deal with airfare and 3 night hotel stay. But I would NEVER EVER return to this resort. The best part of the hotel is the large pool and the sandy beach. On this side of the Cancun, all of the hotels have nice sandy beaches with calm waters. On the other side, where the Barceló is, a lot of the hotels' beaches are washed away and the waves are huge. You cannot even walk in the ocean up to your knees without getting knocked down. The worse part of the trip was the room. I stayed in a Jr Suite right in the middle of the pyramid styled main building and it was SOOO noisy. There was a 2 inch gap under the door didn't help with the noise. But you could literally hear every noise in the hallway, including the drunks getting into a fight at 2am that lasted for an hour! It also had out dated furniture which didn't make it seem too luxurious. I mean how much would it cost to get new bedspreads that didn't have cigarette burns? I could've dealt with the furnishings but what really topped off everything is that I got sick there! I'm sure you have heard of montezuma's revenge? Well both of us got it and we continuously got worse everyday. Went to the doctor a few days after I got back and he sent me to the ER! I didn't drink any of the water, but I know I got it either from the resorts frozen drinks or the Fountain machine in the Buffet. That machine smelled like a horse trough, I should've trusted my instincts and only drank can sodas or bottle water. Good luck if you choose to stay here!

Most of the reviews I had read prior to going were dead on. The staff is very friendly, unfortunetly the hotel shows its age. ... There is no airconditioning outside your room except the indoor restaurants. The lobby at night is extremetly hot, because everybody gathers to listen to music and have a drink. Being from Miami Florida I thought I could stand the heat, but it was was unbearable. The staff goes out of their way to put a show or have some type of activity every night for their guest. For the money its OK, but next time I"ll try another place that I won't have to wake-up every morning with a sore back.

The hotel was well kept and the staff was super friendly and very accomodating. This hotel is perfect for couples or families ... looking for a great vacation experience for a great price without compromising quality. As a self-admitting picky eater the buffet court (the Albatros) had options for everyone. However, the Mexican Restaurant (Maria Margarita) which required reservations left much to be desired.

You can take the bus for night life but if your a lazy vacationer (like me) its about a $5 cab ride. If your a heavy drinker you should definitely try the "Bar Leaper" package in the entertainment district as you get to bar hop to three different places (including COCO BONGO) for ALL YOU CAN DRINK Decent Quality Liquor. Coco Bongo is the equivalent of Ringling Bros Circus, Moulin Rouge (paris-not the movie) and Rocky Horror Picture show-simply fantastic.
