A great escape in middle of the action
Veggie Jul 21, 2009
Up the hill in the Hollywood Heights neighborhood, this hotel is quiet yet still close to all the action of Hollywood. The ... hill is steep and twisty and fun to walk down (and back up) or you can get a quick ride from the staff at the Magic Castle Hotel. Our room had a view of the hill with some pretty amazing houses. The pool is big, deep and gorgeous, with fantastic views of the city. Just up the hill a little further is Yamashiro Restaurant, which served the best sushi I've ever had, an amazing dessert (brulee poached peach with vanilla sponge cake, roasted pecans, creme anglais and caramel crust), and Elijah Wood was sitting on the front steps when we arrived. It's a very nice place where you can show up dressed however you please. Our room was a suite with two double beds, small kitchen, large sitting room and long balcony with a plastic table and chairs. The balcony overlooked the distant Griffith Observatory and had views of the rising sun. The bathroom had two sinks and tub/shower combo with good space. Toiletries supplied were ample and better quality than most hotels. The linens were excellent, beds comfy. This is an old hotel, and it shows its age here and there. However, this is no bland, stark Days Inn, and the character of this place is charming and satisfying. At the top of the driveway, there is a pretty close view of the Hollywood sign. The one-way road to the top of the hill is narrow and twisty. Google Maps doesn't realize many of those streets on the hill are one-way, so take care in planning. It's easy to get around on Franklin, Highland and La Brea, anyway. The staff at the hotel were pleasant and helpful and made us feel welcome and at ease. The breakfast is ample, with croissants, muffins, scones, fresh fruit (plums, peaches, kiwifruit, apples, bananas, pears), hot (packets) and cold cereal, granola, yogurt, bread/toast, juices, milk, coffee (flavor shots available), several varieties of tea, and packets of hot chocolate and spiced apple cider. In the evenings, cucumber water was in the Magic Castle Hotel lobby. My 9-year-old daughter was an instant addict. Minibar snacks were available, and the staff would deliver them to your room if you desperately needed a granola bar or a bag of M&Ms and couldn't be bothered to walk down the hill. This hotel is walking distance to Hollywood Boulevard and short driving distance (about 5 minutes) to Universal Studios. Another short drive is Griffith Park and Observatory, which was beautiful itself, and provided good views of the city and Hollywood sign. Longer drives are Santa Monica, Venice, Malibu and Long Beach, from half an hour to Santa Monica, up to an hour to Long Beach, depending on traffic. I would have liked Internet access in our room, but not having it was probably better for getting us up and doing things. Free wireless was available in the Magic Castle Hotel lobby, however. This was one of my favorite hotel stays, and I love to travel and do so often. I would stay here again if I were in need of a Hollywood-area hotel or wanted a central location from which to tour LA.

Go to Miceli's for dinner. There is one on Las Palmas, which is walking distance from the hotel, or one just over the hill in Universal City, a very short drive and a great place to stop after a day at Universal Studios, which is what we did. The staff is friendly and musical--the servers sing big band tunes with live accompaniment, and they are very good. I wouldn't normally like that sort of thing, but it was fun and relaxing. The decor is gorgeous, and the food couldn't get any better. There is a lot to choose from and the portions are large. A great place.

A hidden gem!
Staci B. May 3, 2009
This was our first trip to L.A. and I must say one of the things that made our trip perfect was the hotel. We had a great ... city view as well as a fabulous view of the Hollywood Hills. The accomodations were clean and comfortable. They had a nice, friendly and very accomodating staff. Finally, one of the best things about this hotel was the location. We only had to walk a short distance to Hollywood Blvd where all the action seemed to be. We were totally happy with our choice of hotels.

Hollywood's best kept secret
Michael Jul 31, 2008
It is located higher than the Magic Castle but as a guest you can use the short cut, so it's good morning exercise before and ... after breakfast. The selection for the breakfast is very good, with wonderful muffin and cookies. Maybe sitting space is not enough for 2 hotels, nut everyone seem to manage it somehow. Choices of food is great. They proper cutlery, plates and napkin (fabric). Room is quiet and you can rest peacefully after busy day. You get free snacks and drinks as a part of your mini bar, detergent and softener for laundry and dish washing detergent, sponge, kitchen towel and cofee. Price including all these is a great deal. Carpet was bit on the dirty side. Hope they wash or replace them soon. Small details should not affect the guest from choosing this place.
