The Hilton is well-situated (just a short 2-block walk to the 6th Street entertainment district). It's a nice, new place. I ... was just disappointed that there was apparently an extra charge to use the fitness center (tho I never had the time anyway).

False Alarm
algop Jan 18, 2010
Someone discharged the fire extinguisher on the 19th floor, which is where my room was located. The automatic emergency alarm ... went off instructing everyone to leave via the stairwell. I was about to start down the stairs--because the doors lock from the stairwell side once entering the stairwell means a very long descent--when a fireman explained what had happened. That was a close call; walking down 19 floors would have been no fun at all. This happened around 2:00AM.Also, when I checked in they had me registered for three rooms, not one. That was easy to fix and a telephone call to [...] assured that I wasn't to be charged for three rooms. The valet parking was $26.00/day, a hefty hit; roughly 25% of the cost of the room.

Nice hotel, but the valet service sucks.
eyang Jan 17, 2010
I enjoyed my stay at the Hilton very much. However, there was one service about the hotel that was severely found lacking and ... that was the valet service. There would be several valet personnel loitering out front and instead of promptly taking service of the car each time I pulled up at the front, they would continue to chit chat and then saunter over at their leisure. Also, they had the audacity to change the safety features of my vehicle. Car seats and mirror adjustments, I understand, but to disable the auto-door/ignition lock safety features without even giving me any notice? Definitely not acceptable. If I had not realized that the auto-door lock feature had been disabled, I could have left my vehicle vulnerable to being stolen. I found it very difficult to believe that a top-chain hotel as the Hilton would provide such poor valet service, but I have personally experienced it myself. I would be very hesitant to stay at the Austin Hilton again if I took my car with me just because of the bad valet service.

An inconvenient trip
Zealoot Sep 19, 2009
The Hotel had a flooding on my floor that triggered the alarm the last night, the initial guidance when we had to go down the ... stairs was poor, we didn't know where to go / gather and we didn't know what happened. I had to wait for hours in the lobby before I could queue to get another room but I couldn't get to my initial room to gather my belongings before so the room was useless. When could go back to my room in the AM I had to pack and leave. I tried t convince the staff that it was unacceptable and that I wanted my night to be re-reimbursed. They only offered to wave the internet charges and after 30 minutes of discussion they agreed to offer me breakfast. I think this is a terrible service, an hotel that is not capable to provide you with a room where you can sleep for the totality of a night should not charge you for that night.

Business in Austin Sep 19, 2009
The location is perfect for sixth street. Otherwise my experience was poor at this hotel. First theres the dining. The hotel ... has two restraunts. One is a mid price cafe and the other an "up scale" steak and seafood restraunt. The cafe closes after lunch and I got in a dinner time so no input there. I ordered a forty dollar steak (ala carte) in the restraunt. It was overcooked, overseasoned, and mid quality meat at best. It was what I would expect to get get for fifteen dollars at somewhere like outback or lone star. I got there fifteen minutes after they opened and the staff was unprepared for service and seemed confused as to service (I got my bread after the main course was served for example). Next the gym. The hotel has a health club onsite. It looked nice, but it costs extra to use even the cardio machines. Its a sliding scale, but I believe it was ten dollars for a one time use. I declined. Internet costs an extra thirteen dollars per day and is slow. The hotel is in need of renovation. the seventies feel is not retro, but a failure to make upgrades and replace fixtures over the years. The walls are also paper thin. I was awakened at 3:00 am by a couple having a normal volume conversation in the room next door. They weren't yelling but it still sounded like they were in the same room as me. Speaking of waking up at 3:00 am, my second night the fire alarms went off at 3:30 in the morning and all guests were forced to evacuate their rooms and were not allowed to return until 5:00 am. No comps were given for this experience. Leaving aside the fire alarm incident, which I could chalk up to a techinical glitch, this hotel is simply not up to standards. They have pretensions of a five star hotel, and in all fairness the hotel staff were generally friendly and competent under difficult circumstances. However a substandard (for the price) restraunt, extra charges for what should be basic amenities such as internet and gyms access are not what I expect from a hotel touting itself as an upscale hotel. And the rooms are outdated and nothing special. There are plenty of cheaper places with equally good locations to the convention center and sixth street. This hotel is not reccomended.

The hotel location was excellent for downtown nightlife. I do have two complaints: 1) Parking beneath the Hilton.. ... Navigating through the maze of parking is difficult, there are some aisles that are marked as exits but have no exit. In addition, the driving lanes are very narrow and way too many dangerous blindspots. 2) The fitness center receptionist was uninviting. She never smiled while checking my room card and did not say goodbye as we were leaving.

The staff was very helpful and polite. The hotel was very clean. I was disappointed in the gift shop. It was a high end ... boutique, without the usual last minute necessities that a travler might need. While the UPS store/business center had extended hours (7-9) I felt that those hours were limiting.
