This was a mixed business/pleasure trip. We did conferences and sightseeing and shopping. The location could not have been ... better. Everything about our stay way absolutely convenient and friendly, clean and comfortable. The Amalfi offers room service/delivery from Harry Carey's Italian Steakhouse-probably the best burger I've ever had.

We went to Chicago to attend a wedding and thought we would see a few sights while we were there. The Amalfi hotel is a very ... service orientated property. Their people are very responsive, informative and helpful. Convient location made it easy for us to catch a cab or walk to our destinations. Executive breakfast and complimentary happy hour were nicely done.

Amalfi and Chicago trip
Peanut Nov 15, 2009
Great staff, and clean rooms. Very helpful in sending us to great pizza place and walk to Sears (Willis Tower). Weather was ... sunny and high 50's and 60's. Harry Carrey's across the street had great filet and key lime pie. 10 pin (bowling) with 27 lanes a block away. Definately invest in City Pass and CTA bus pass as they are less expensive than buying a daily pass. Saw Blue Man Group and it was great, very interactive with audience and great show. you can even get front row seats but be prepared to wear poncho so you don't get the colors all over you. So much to see. Aquarium is great for kids (Fantashea) show. Museum of Science and Industry wsa also great and interactive Kid stuff. Mellenium park was beautiful and loved the sculptures along with many shops on Michigan avenue.

The staff was helpful; they helped us with some public transportation schedules. The rooms were great - very clean & the bed ... was perfect. We enjoyed the cocktail hour, especially the Amalfitinis (the hotel's signature drink). The fitness center was the only thing that wasn't fabulous, but it was certainly equipped enough for me to get the job done.

Great spot for a getaway!
EandJandA Sep 28, 2009
I booked this hotel as part of a surprise birthday trip for my husband and was hoping, based on the reviews I had read, that ... it would be great. I wasn't disappointed! Upon entering the hotel, we were immediately able to check in, which can often prove to be a time-consuming task, in my experience. We had the keys to our room within a couple of minutes and were on our way up to our room. The lobby and hotel common areas were clean and stylishly decorated, as was our room. As we entered the room, the first thing I noticed was the beautifully inviting king-sized bed. Though the room was not especially spacious, it was not cramped, either, and a window that spanned one entire wall helped it to feel open and bright. Aside from the large bed and window, other nice details included a comfy armchair, flat-screen television, stack of current magazines and i-pod base. The bathroom was another pleasant aspect of our stay...extremely clean and well-stocked with Aveda products, towels, vanity mirror and hair dryer. The dual shower head felt wonderful after a long day of exploring the city. Because I am pregnant, I didn't sample any of the cocktails or deli meats/soft cheeses offered at the complimentary reception held on the 6th floor in the evenings. I went with my husband , though, and heard people raving about the "Amalfitinis," as well as the snacks. My husband liked being able to have a drink and a few light bites before venturing out for the evening. The Continental-style breakfast offered in the morning wasn't really much different than what many hotels offer. Plenty of yogurts, juices, coffee, bagels and other pastries...it would be great for a family with children, as I'm sure it would save $20-30 from being spent on similar items at the Einstein Bros. down the block. Overall, our stay at the Amalfi was extremely positive. It was nice to actually look forward to returning to our room each evening. We both agreed that we felt well-rested and refreshed after sleeping in the supremely comfortable bed. The staff was friendly and helpful, yet not overbearing. My only 2 (minor) complaints are the early (to me) housekeeping rounds and the high (to me) authorization that the Amalfi put on my bank card to cover "incidentals." Had I been aware of either beforehand, I don't think they would've been an issue for me, though. The first morning of our stay, Saturday, housekeeping came by right at 9 and knocked. To me, that seemed early, although I know it would be fine for some, but my husband and I had both just woken and were still in our pajamas. Had I known that they began their rounds at 9 or sooner, I would've been sure to put up the "Do not disturb" sign, as we like to sleep in on the weekends when we're away from our young child. The other surprising thing that I encountered was a $50/day authorization on our bankcard, totaling $100. Not really such a big deal, but I wasn't expecting it and would've likely used a credit card instead to cover the "incidentals" (things like the $7 bottles of water and $5 Snickers bars offered in the mini-bar in our room, I assume) so that our actual cash wouldn't be tied up during the trip. The concierge or desk attendant who checked us in didn't mention that an authorization of $50 would be placed on the card, which I think would have been an appropriate bit of information to share. Again, not really such a big deal, but helpful to know ahead of time.

Definitely purchase the 3- or 7-day CTA pass, depending on the length of your stay. The Amalfi is very conveniently located near at least 2 train stops (blue and red lines), making it just a hop, skip and jump away from wherever you want to go. $14 for the 3-day pass just could not be beat...it freed up the money we had been planning to use on taxis for restaurants and other entertainment!

Dont waste time, gut or money at the Billy Goat Tavern. Rotten pre-maid hamburger patties...yummy! But to be fair, the bun wasnt all bad. There is a great West African restaurant though right outside the El Wilson stop on the red line. The main guy working there was extremely nice and eager to please, especially considering we were 3 white guys in an African restaurant(not a racist statement but we were not the "regular" customers), but he treated us extremely well.
