This was the perfect location for us!
World Traveller Nov 30, 2009
I treated my brother to a 6 day trip to Honolulu, Oahu. We arrived at the hotel and were immediately greeted, registered, ... upgraded and sent off to our room. It had a view of the ocean even though we only booked a street room. The staff couldn't have been nicer, nor more prompt when I called for extra pillows. The hotel is one of the originals on the beach, which is why we booked it. We wanted the flavor of a well travelled hotel with lots of history set right smack dab in the middle of Waikiki. We loved our stay. Walking right out onto the beach was a plus for us, strolling across the street to the International market for our souvenirs made our shopping easy. Dukes Canoe Club offered fabulous lunch and breakfast, while the other three restaurant choices added equally wonderful choices. Loved it, loved it, loved it!!!

Great hotel.. the back side is right on the beach! A lot of the hotels do not face the beach. Small pool, but hey.. the ... beach is a few steps away! Some of the road noise from the main strip was a little loud for our tastes, but coming from a big city it didn't bother me one bit. Rooms were clean, the staff is very nice. Right on the main strip with a lot of shopping and food!

Enjoyed the trip & overall very pleased. Nov 26, 2009
Very nice 'partial ocean view', but couldn't open balcony door due to the noisy a/c units on roof next door to hotel. No ... chaises available for guests after 8:00AM and the jacuzzi/sun deck area closed most afternoons from 3 or 4PM til sunset for entertainment outside. Very nice staff, very nice room, the noise of the 2 restaurants interferes with enjoying pool area. Great hospitality room for changing/showering even after check-out. Free long-distance phone calls to anywhere in US from your room!!! Best location to walk to most attractions, restaurants and shopping. No rental car service available in hotel--had to go to the Hyatt just one block away. Would prefer a quieter resort in the future.

Take a stroll one block north of the hotel to Kuhio and there are many less expensive restaurants along that street. Also don't miss having a sunset Mai-Tai @ the Rumfire Bar just 2 hotels over from the Outrigger on the Beach.

This is a city hotel, right on the beach. There is something going on in the street all of the time. I could hear the music ... until 2 am. I enjoyed it , but it could be too much for people looking to relax. They do charge to use the computer and print your boarding pass though. I have not see that before, even at much less expensive places.

It was a great trip. The hotel location was great. It was right on the beach and everything else was within a very short ... walking distance. We did the hiking, dinner cruise, luau, helicopter tour, and everything was great. The only thing missing on our trip was someone to feed us grapes while sunbathing. The one downside I can think of was hearing street noise and elevator noise from our room at night, but that wasn't a big problem. If you get in a full day of activities, falling asleep through the noise won't be much of a problem.

Their beach is the best, however the hotel does not provide lounge chairs or umbrellas - those you must rent from vendors on ... the "public" beach. The view of Diamond Head is incredible. Swimming and learning to surf is great. This was our first time to Hawaii and we'd do it again at an OutRigger Hotel! Restaurants were superb. Staff is friendly and helpful.

Hawaii Fan Nov 3, 2009
I wanted to stay in Waikiki for the last night of our trip to enjoy one last sunset on Waikiki beach. I forgot since the last ... time we visited, how crowded and totally overrun it was with all the tourists trying frantically to spend their money in all the crowded shops. The shops so crowd the entrance to the hotel that we missed it three times and they charged us $25 to park the rental car. Room was small but clean. Tub was a joke (a half tub that a "little person" wouldn't even be comfortable in. But hey, who takes baths anymore) Safe didn't work, so I gave up and took a chance that my jewelry would be safe. But it was adequate for the price I spent through [...]. It was OK for one night, but not for me. Only one positive thing I can say about Honolulu is, don't rent a car if you're only planning to stay in and around the city. Busses go practically everywhere you want to go and all the shopping, eateries, entertainment and nightlife is within walking distance (if that's what you're into). If you want quiet tranquility and peace, go to the outer areas of Oahu. They are there, you just have to look.

International Market was right across the street from this hotel. Vendors practically pounce on you when you near their cart. They all have the same things, so shop and barter.

This is our second time at Outrigger on the Beach. If you like to people watch, enjoy easy access to an outstanding Waikiki ... beach area and activities, and a fun restaurant/bar site; this is the place to go. Rates are reasonable, rooms are clean, staff is friendly; and there is adequate security due room key card requirements for the elevators. Pool area is small and often crowded, but clean and has food and beverage service. Lounge chairs at the pool tend to be 'saved' by people upon opening at 8am, as they continue to keep a towel on their chair throughout the day, even if they aren't using it. Pool is 4ft plus, great for adults but not kid-friendly, if that is something you are needing. Room cleaning can be a bit pokey, as sometimes we were out all day and returned to someone cleaning our room at 4:00 pm, just as we are wanting to shower and prep for the evening despite removing our 'do not disturb' sign. This was fairly consistent throughout both of our stays. Rooms at the end of the hall can be a bit noisy with street noise at night, but all in all this is a great place if you are looking to stay somewhere that isn't super expensive, is clean and accomodating, AND in a great location for the International Market and restaurants.
Traveler type: Family
There is a site to rent beach umbrellas and lounge chairs on the beach, right in front of the hotel. They open at 8am. If you decide to rent these for the day and want a premium spot (front row), you may need to get in line as early as 7:30am. They fill up fast!

This was my 3rd trip to Waikiki. It was the best location and hotel yet. The staff are very friendly and helpful. We did ... have one day where internet was not available and they sent me across the street to a partner hotel. I thought my computer was messed up. There is wireless in the lobby and ethernet in the rooms, their ethernet is just a step above dial-up. Some of us are computer dependent. One snafu for us was that we were there for a family wedding and they did not get all the family on one floor as was requested, we booked several months in advance. One other little pet peeve, with the time change, or even without it, I get up early. Its a pain to wait for the beach guys (umbrellas and lounge chairs, towels) to open at 8am which is noon where I am from. Lots of people standing in line starting at 7am, couldnt they even try to accomodate the early birds? The location is very central to the amazing street acts at night. Just go accross the street and you are right in the middle of all of it! This was the first staff of bell persons that were helpful and efficient in getting shuttles, cabs etc when we asked. Just the best place I have stayed in Waikiki.

We requested King rooms, City View. We were not dissappointed. Great View for price paid. We could see the OCEAN, pool and ... the city all from room 1005. The one drawback to the Outrigger was that the room had an ajoining door, single door not insulated, and you could hear the guests in the other room. Every time the room next door opened their door the ajoining door would rattle....blow dryer in the A.M. Nice, clean hotel but...It was noisy. All staff were very attentive and helpful. Valet parking only at a cost of $25 per day, plus tip....way too much especially considering you have paid for a room.

Dine at the revolving restaurant called Top of Waikiki. The food is amazing. We first chose this place as a final goodbye overlooking all of Waikiki and Honolulu, with little thought that the food would be as good as the view. In my past experience, "frou-frou" restaurants always left me hungry and wanting more, but the portions here were hearty and for once in these kinds of restaurants, I actually had a take home box! And on another note, POKE, POKE, POKE! If you haven't had it, try it, and the best place to get some is a supermarket called Don Quijote. Look it up, for sashimi lovers, this is something you'll die for!
