Location and rooms are nice, but...
Tripper Dec 17, 2009
Two of us stayed in an ocean front room for a week on vacation. The maid service was very inconsistent. Sometimes completely ... making beds and sometimes leaving off the comforter or pillows (we tipped everyday but it didn't matter). The valet parking and parking fee was terrible. It cost me $150 to park my car during our stay. Each time they brought my car up for me the windows, sunroof or seat was changed and on one occasion it smelled so badly of cigarettes that I was worried I would get fined when I returned the car ($250 for smoking in a rental). I stopped tipping them after that. The coin-operated laundry has no change machine so you have to hunt someone down to get change if you want to use it. The worst was the hotel's lack of good restaurants. The Shorebird was great for breakfast, but you have to cook your own dinner. It was good, but standing in line around a hot grill was not what I had in mind for vacation. The grill poolside had nice service but was mostly a bar. The Ocean House was just terrible. The staff was rude and hurried, and we sat unattended for 15 minutes. The server seemed offended at our order (we both ended up ordering the chicken). We waited another 25 minutes for our meals. This was by far the worst meal we had. The chicken was very dry and tasteless and was a very small piece on top of a scoop of mashed potato or in my case a scoop of rice. The waiter apologized saying everything was made from scratch, but didn't do anything about it. There is nothing good I can say about the Ocean House. We walked down to the HHV and found Sergio's to be very good. We also walked over to Moose Magillicutty's and it was good. (BTW: We never did find any Hawaiian Food in what is billed as "one of the most Hawaiian hotels".) The room we stayed in was nice and the beachfront view was also nice, but not peaceful. The Ocean House is right beneath the Ocean Front rooms and the Shorebird is just next to it so you can hear all the kitchen noise as well as all the talking and dishes clanking until midnight. Sleeping with the patio door open is not possible. The hotel is in a nice location but putting 2 restaurants right under the most expensive rooms was a poor idea. The free phone calls was a very nice perk and we had free breakfast everyday at the Shorebird, which was also very nice. Overall it is a nice hotel in a nice location aside from the previous items I mentioned, but not worth the price and aggravations.
Traveler type: Friends
For dinner go to Moose Magillicutty's just down the street and around the corner or Sergio's at the Hilton Hawaiian Village. Don't go to the Ocean House (although you may fair better then we did). The Shorebird is great for breakfast but only good for dinner if you don't mind cooking your own meal.

We traveled with a group of 13 people who all stayed at the hotel. Everyone was more than pleased with the Outrigger Reef. ... The location was perfect - on the beach in the center of everything and the price was very reasonable. The service was great. Hotel staff was able to help with any activities questions including bus routes, scheduling luau, etc. The rooms were very nice, clean, and comfortable. Every room had a balcony. My daughter received a free upgraded room since she was getting married; it was very large with 2 balconies. We did not use the pool since we were too busy going all over Honolulu and the entire island. However, the pool area did look very relaxing. If we travel to Hawaii again, we will definitely stay at the Outrigger Reef.

Outrigger Reef on the Beach - Classy!
Tharan24k Nov 10, 2009
The view of Diamond Head from the beach area and the restaurant are great! The food was very good and reasonable (for ... Hawai'i). Staff members are friendly and helpful. The hotel does not provide beach chairs or umbrellas - those you rent on the public beach. In November the beach is not crowded but during the high season it probably will be.

Take the 19, 22, or 23 bus to the Aloha Tower for shopping and dining. Aloha Tower is open only until 5:00 p.m. Return to the hotel from bus stop one half block to the right of the Aloha Tower mall entrance as you are coming out. Use the "E" bus.

Sug Nov 2, 2009
The Outrigger Reef has been beautifully renovated including the historic, soaring canoe house entrance. Local musicians play ... traditional Hawaiian music every night at the Grille and it sounds beautiful wafting up to our room which overlooked the pool courtyard. The location is excellent, right down the street from the new Waikiki Beach Walk Development(and all trolley and bus stops). Walk over to the Hilton Hawaiian Village for a luau and check out the beautiful sculptures all over the property. Try Eggs n Things on Saratoga Street for a "local" breakfast spot and the Yard House on Lewers for the best grilled cheese/tomatoe soup combo. We took the bus and/or cabs to Diamond Head, Iolani Palace, Hanauma Bay and Pearl Harbor (USS Missouri currently in drydock). Although cabs are usually expensive, plenty of cab drivers were offering fares off the meter that were usually just a couple dollars more than the bus. Rented a car for a day trip to the North Shore.

Another fantastic trip to Hawaii
Hawaii Joy Oct 27, 2009
This was my 2nd time staying at the Outrigger Reef & both visits were wonderful. Now that the hotel is done with their ... remodeling it's probably the best place to stay in Waikiki. The pool never felt crowded, chairs were always available. The pool area isn't as noisy as at some of the more resort-type hotels. We spent alot of time at the Shorebird Beach bar. Their lunch menu is great & the Mai Tai specials from Noon until 5 can't be beat. PLUS the view, it's just amazing. Sitting there & gazing out at the beach & Diamnond Head, well it doesn't get any better than that. We also had breakfast included with our room, so we ate here every morning too. Two days we got to witness the Vow Renewal ceremony that the hotel puts on. It looks beautiful & my husband & I plan to return in 3 years do renew our vows for our 25th anniversary. It was a great, relaxing vacation. The worst part of the whole trip, having to leave the hotel to come home.
Traveler type: Couples
Make use of the ABC Stores. They are all over Waikiki, with one just a short block from the hotel. They have large bottles of water for only .99 & they also have sandwiches & snacks. Coco Cove on Kalakaua also has a nice deli if you just want a sandwich so you can have lunch on the beach or by the pool.

My Husband and I loved the Outrigger Reef on the Beach!! We were on our 25th Anniversary and my Husband 5oth Birthday. The ... last time we were in Hawaii was 25 years ago for our Honeymoon. We loved our ocean veiw and the size of our room. The hotel was very clean and friendly. One of the things we really liked was having our breakfast included with our stay. We really liked were our hotel was located because one of our favorite things to do is to walk along the ocean front every moring after breakfast, then lay out on the beach for the afternoon. We only went to the hotel pool on the last day of our because we felt that the reason we came to Hawaii was to enjoy the ocean. We loved the fact that we were close to all the shopping and some very good restaurants. Our favorite place was the Ocean front restaurant that was right in our hotel it a very classy place and the service was bar none!!! We give the Outrigger Reef on the beach a 5!!

AlohaLani made us feel welcome the minute we arrived and called us before checking out which started our trip out right and ... ended it on a high note. We were in town for the ADA Dental Convetion and felt right at home in the Outrigger Reef on the Beach. We had a great time and would recommend this hotel to those who like the island feel while having that cosmopolitan flair.

Extra Person Charge Excessive
ToothWizard Oct 8, 2009
Despite two double beds in the room, an extra person fee of $50 was added to the room rate. Considering the expenses to the ... hotel were more toiletries and towels used, this was over-the-top excessive. For the six-day stay that amounted to $300 plus taxes. Besides the mandatory valet parking at the hotel, having a rental car was worth its weight in gold. Waikiki is what it is: crowded, expensive, and of course very touristy. At no time did I feel trapped and I could get out of the city whenever I felt like it and find my own slice of Hawaii. Trust me, there is way more to see, the island is not just Honolulu/Waikiki.
--The Satisfied Canadian, Vancouver, British Columbia Aug 7, 2009
The Outrigger Reef serves as the perfect hub for an Oahu vacation. Don't get a rental from the airport - use www.jcairportshuttle.com for a private ride to your hotel, then just pick up a rental as you need it from the Hertz desk at the hotel. With no car on your hands, it's easy to kick back and soak in the hotel's ameneties and service, and walk to the many Waikiki attractions as you wish. Then when you want to strike out, the great valet service will handle your rental car at a moment's notice. Suggest you book the rentals in advance if you can to ensure available cars.
--Pablo, Duncan, OK Aug 6, 2009
Don't get your souvenirs at all of the shops at the Beachwalk. You can go to the Flea Market next to Aloha Stadium or to the Alo Manoa Mall and get them for half the price. 8 shirts for $20.
