Standard room was actually a closet. Only one restaurant open. Mi Casa Su Casa never opened. Bacarra (sister resort) street ... level restaurant closed. Only two people working pool bar. Had to order own drinks due to lack of staff. Pool enterainer tried his best with what he had. Had games and activities in the evening. This resort has gone down hill since our visit in 2006. Beach was open which was a great thing. Housekeeping did a good job cleaning the rooms. Resort needs to upgrade to keep up with Palace Resort next door (beach Club) Staff needs to smile more.

unfriendly, hot pools, no beach
travelbuff Aug 1, 2009
Where to start. First off the pool is HOT. and the hot tubs cool. no way to cool down there except in your room. The room had ... a balcony that was closed in by the buildings sides, the view was about 3 feet wide. The food was disappointingly boring there was no variety at all. They used lunches left overs in dinner. The sports bar is a joke. There are no elevators, be ready to hoof it up to the sixth floor 5 times a day. And the staff acted like you were bothering them just by asking a question. And the best part is the beach is all of two feet wide from the water edge to the sea wall. I will not be going back. Just one good thing about the room was a very comfortable bed.

Great stay!!!!
Jessica Jul 11, 2009
I was really worried about arriving at the Avalon after reading some reviews on different websites. I was going with my ... friend and normally havent stayed in "nice" hotels before. Everything was SO clean and everyone was really helpful! I cant comment on the food since we didn't get the all inclusive plan and had our meals outside of the hotel. Though one night we did get room service and it was quick and tasty. Actually, a deal through Orbitz with our room allowed us to get 15% off (we forgot about that), and the next morning we were greeted at the desk with a refund from what we paid! I thought that was really great and not typical. The beach was very small like other people said, but that seems true for the majority of the hotels in the area. They had a lot of chairs above the beach to sunbathe around the pool. Always had clean towels and if they didnt, they would bring them to you! My one complaint was that to reach the beach you had to go down a somewhat rickety woodenstaircase, but it was doable. That really is my ONLY complaint though. What a great stay!

We HAVE A TIME SHARE IN CANCUN AND I HAD SET OUR FLIGHT A DAY EARLY (MY FAULT). AND AT THE LAST MINUTE TRUSTED ORBITS TO SET ... US UP FOR THE NIGHT. IT IS NOT COMMON TO SLIP AND FALL INTO GRADE A SERVICE. THIS WAS OR EXPERIENCE! I LOVED THE SERVICE BY ORBITZ AND THE AVALON WAS EVERYTHING THAT WAS PROMISED AND THEN SOME! YOU HAVE EARNED ANOTHER CLIENT AND I WOULD RECOMMEND YOUR SERVICES TO MY OWN FAMILY.

A great disappointment
Peggy Jan 6, 2009
My boyfriend and I booked a week stay at the Avalon Grand in Cancun at the end of December. What struck us immediately was ... the rudeness of the people checking us in. We asked some questions about the hotel and were told that they would get back to us with the answers--we never were contacted. Our biggest disappointment was the beach or the lack thereof..the main reason we went to Cancun was to relax on the beach and there was just a tiny strip of sand in front of the resort and no access to the beach from the property--and certainly no chairs or umbrellas of any kind. The pool was OK, but again in the morning, when we went to get towels, the towel stand wasn't manned and we had to go to the front desk and have them get us some, and they weren't very accomodating when they had to do this. We basically left the resort each day and headed out on our own to find a beach. When we returned in the evening, on a couple of occasions, we found our sheets changed, but the rest of our bedding laying on the floor in a pile and had to make our own bed. We basically spent as little time as possible at our resort. We have both been to Mexico on numerous occasions and have never been as disappointed as we were with this property.

Stayed in Cancun for the new years celebration 2009. Avalon Grand is very pretty and very well kept. Staff very friendly ... but not well organized at the front desk and restaurants. Great ocean views but hard beds and lots of stairs, food is very good. Eating out can get really expensive so go with the all inclusive plan at the hotel. The infinity pool is great to kick back and have drinks. Great town with friendly people felt very safe. Overall great experience in Cancun/Costa Maya planning to return for next new year 2010!

Avalon Grand Cancun was a very comfortable stay. The room was big enough for 6 people with a great view. The staff is great ... the room was alway clean and when we asked for something they didn't took more than 5 min. to provide us with what we asked for. The location is very good, near the club and restaurants and with it own beach (the sea was very strong to get in at the time we went). The food was exellent i think is the best food i had on the trip. I will highly recomend this hotel for anyone and i will defenetly will not dout to go and stay there again.

This was our second vistit to the Avalon Grand and both visits were great! The hotel is centrally located and the staff is ... amazing. Both restaurants on site have fabulous food with good variety. We enjoyed being able to just order our lunch from the bar right next to the pool. Their beach area is small, but we were able to play in the ocean with my mom watching us from the pool! I just can't say enough about the wonderful staff and if we return to Cancun we will return to the Avalon.

This hotel has lost it's spark

I've stayed at this hotel on at least 4 occasions before the hurricane that left this hotel out of service physically and ... spiritually for a long time. I think some things were never regained after the storm which are easily detected. The comfort is great, great location and amenities for being a 3 star hotel, and as all others in Cancun you get tired of the same old selections of food if you're staying a week. However, if you're goin for the beach, forget it, that was the biggest disappointment and was even more disappointed in the ONLY reservation needed restaurant that was incredible in the past. It was barely average, stating you need to wear dress clothes and even charged for a specialty coffee. Kelly's bar was completely dry, they use to have food here but no more, use to want to stay at the hotel for fun, there is none. The entertainment was minimal and just not the excitement and service of the staff that I remember making us want to return. Very say but doubt we'll go back, too much other competition. Price was very good but would rather pay a bit more for something else.

The Avalon Grande was a nice family environment. The entertainment was interesting. The staff was friendly. The food was ... horrible, the first time I visited this hotel there was more of a variety of food. During this visit there was only traditional mexican food. The sports bars hour were limited. The front desk also neglected to inform us that there is a $6.00 connection fee for each phone call made from the room.

Avalon Grand - Great for 1 week
Shaun Feb 17, 2008
The Avalon Grand feels like a smaller boutique hotel. There are two pools with one hanging over the ocean. There was NO ... beach access which was a little disappointing... as everyone already knows the beaches have disappeared back into the ocean! The rooms are clean and well kept -- except for the 19 TV that was on it's last legs. The hotel is located close to LaIsla shopping center and Downtown. The food service was good but staying two weeks in a smaller AI was not a good idea.

Great hotel for the money! Better than I expected. About 5 blocks from the major mall. Breakfast buffet was free and ... above average. Pool and view of ocean was pretty, but NO beach at all. Room was larger than most we have stayed at with tile shower and modern raised sink bowl. Room was a little dark as there were only 3 smaller windows. We found staff to be pleasant. But when we asked for an extra suitcase stand it never arrived. No elevators, all steps! We were on the 2nd floor, so very acceptable. All in all- excellent, safe, clean value for the money. Would stay here again.

The Avalon Grand was a good hotel. The room was amazing. Stay away from listening to what the hotel offers unless you are ... interested in time shares. We went with no plans on buying anything and they suckered us into listening to a two hour presentation. We even told them from the beginning we weren't interested in buying anything.
