I am a 52 yrs. young widow who was traveling alone for the first time. I booked on Orbitz, with a total travel pkg. My adult ... son helped me with that. I went online and researched things to do in Honolulu/Waikiki. I kept a notebook that I traveled with. I read all the reviews and travel tips from other travelers. Got some really good ideas and suggestions from that and used the info to my advantage. The Honolulu/Waikiki area has a wonderful city bus system. Take advantage of this. It cuts the cost of things you would pay a tour co. big bucks for. I went to Hanauma Bay by city bus ($2.25ea. way for all bus trips.) Rent your snorkel gear there, $6-$10 there. If you have any problems with it you can swap it out there. $7.50 to get in. Nice beach and good snorkeling. Pack snacks to take in. Small vendors & snack bar there too. (Lockers for $3.00). Other bus trips I took were: Pearl Harbor, Arizona Memorial,(FREE). Aloha Stadium Open Air Market ($1.00). Foster Botanical Gardens ($5.00) Highly recommend the gardens. Pack a snack or lunch to take in or exit the park for lunch across the street at Zippy's. I hiked Diamond Head, great views from the top.($1.00) Make sure you buy a refreshing shave ice from the lunch truck after your hike, for your walk back to the bus stop. When you start using the bus ask for bus #'s at the concierge's desk. They want to sell you stuff but info is FREE! Go on a catamaran cruise at the Sheraton on the beach. Reservations needed for sunset cruise ($34.00)Maitai's included. (800)462-7975. This is great value for your dollar! So much fun. I easily walked everywhere lots to see. Check out the galleries in town take yourself on a walking tour of art. I enjoyed the beach, the warm aqua blue waters call your name to jump in. The pool and open air bar was lots of fun at Ohana West. I packed instant oatmeal and had coffee and breakfast in my room. Use The coffee maker for hot water, you can make lots of stuff with that. Great frig. and freezer in my room. brought leftovers back to eat later. Food Pantry right next door to hotel. Snacks,Fruit,Beverages etc. reasonable prices. Also check out the ABC Stores some have more groc. items than others. Cheap sandwiches and stuff for lunch. For dinners bring all your gift cards that you've stashed away. Cheesecake Factory, Chili's, Outback etc. See what's there. I ate very good for reasonably cheap. Some places I called for take out and ate peacefully some where else. Lots of drink specials all over town, keep your eyes open and check those out. Loved my hotel....you're in Hawaii every thing's perfect. I am the type of person that looks at everything like the glass is half full. If your elevator is slow talk to the people around you, make friends...you get talking the elevator arrives fast. Smile you're in Hawaii if you get on the Hawaiian pace of life all is good. Leave a small tip $2-3 everyday in your room for the maid with a note of thanks. She will jump hoops for the things you need....Extra coffee, creamer, towels, lotion etc. For the beach every day you can get a couple of beach towels at level M, return them and get fresh the next day. I was there 11 days and 10 nights...enjoyed every minute of it. When arriving at the airport catch the Roberts Shuttle. ($15.00 round trip) Great experience with that. Be patient Ohana West is one of the last stops. Enjoy the view and chat it up with other riders. They were on time to take me back as well.(tip your drivers). Hope all this info helps. I should write a book !

Ohana Waikiki West Review

My wife and I had a great time celebrating our honeymoon on the island of Oahu. We went to the beach, Paradise Cove luau, ... tour of Oahu, dinner cruise, Society of Seven show, the Magic of Polynesia, U.S.S. Arizona memorial, and the rest of the island. Most of the items were The only thing that could be better in regards to the trip was the hotel elevator. The elevator was very bouncy. The elevator felt like going on an amusement ride. Overall, my wife and I loved our trip to Honolulu! This trip to the Hawaiian islands was better than my first trip with the Navy back in 2001. My family and I will return to Oahu and other Hawaiian islands in the next 3-5 years.

3rd time's a charm
Waikiki beach lover Aug 31, 2009
This was my wife's and I third trip to Waikiki. First time was in 03 at a very nice Outrigger hotel (since turned into a ... timeshare/condo thingy), second time in 08 at a cheap but conincidentally a hotel on the same block which was behind the Ohana, and this year 09 we stayed here. Location is excellent as it's right behind the International Market and about 2 blocks from the beach. Actually, more like 1 block but you have walk on 2 sides of the same block and you end up right on the beach. The rooms themselves were clean and room service was done daily. Every room has a lanai (balcony with chairs) so you can enjoy the cool evenings. The beds were getting pretty worn but we were able to sleep. This shouldn't be a problem if you do activities during the day and are tired but if you're going to relax all day in the room then there are better places to do that. Ammenities were good, we had FREE in room safe, high speed internet, fitness center, unlimited beach towels, AND free pass on the Ala Moana trolly. The trolly takes you to the mall but also stops at several other hotels so you could ride around waikiki for free. The mall is also right across from the Ala Moana beach park (great for picnics, has almost no waves, free parking) and is just a couple blocks away from the marina (where most of the water sports like parasailing, jet skiing, fishing trips are booked and departed). The bad thing about this hotel is also its location. It is on the very busy street Kuhio. We had a room on the 5th flr facing the Kuhio and Ohua intersection. This hotel also has an open air bar on the 2nd flr but it is on the eastside at the Wailea intersection. That wasnt the problem. Right across the street on the backend of the International market was a new club that opened up. All you could hear till 2am was the pounding bass of whatever song they were playing. I like bass but not late at night. We got used to it and fortunately we were tired from our activities so it wasnt much of a problem. I would request an upper level floor if you needed quiet. They have 17 so its not a problem way up there. The other problem is not with the hotel but again, the location. The backend of the International Market is a hangout spot for a younger crowd. We stayed 7 nights and on 2 seperate occasions there were fights. Not to mention all the "ladies of the night" walking back and forth. Again, all of that is not a big problem if you are back in your room by 10p as most shops close that time anyway. The ABC stores are of course always open. The biggest benefits of this hotel is the value in price, ammenities and location, but in the same sense, the location can be noisy at times. They also have the Ohana East that's 1/2 a block away which is closer to the beach, at an even busier intersection in terms of cars and foot traffic but its very quiet at night. Overall we enjoyed our stay very much and the hotel and staff made up for any street annoyances. There are plenty of nice 5 star hotels for 3x the price but there are even more poorly rated hotels for the SAME price as staying here. This place is the best in this price range.

Don't book your activities online. There are a few good, cheap tour and activities companies in waikiki. The same tours and activities, just cheaper. I recommend Hawaii Tour & Travel. They have people handing out their peach/pink flyers all over waikiki. They are also in many of the discount books. Speaking of which, get all of them as they have many good coupons on transportation and dining. Also, don't buy your souveniers at the International Market, go to the flea market on Wednesdays and Saturdays at the Aloha stadium. All the same stuff just cheaper and you can haggle.

bh Aug 25, 2009
When we arrived, checked in, went to room. Room had not been cleaned. The Hotel needs to be rennovated. Very dated. ... Elevators were slow. Hotel was without power from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. one of the days. The hotel did not make other arrangements with sister hotels to accommodate guests. Location was great. However, there were prostitutes walking up and down the sidewalk across the street from the hotel bothering every guy who walked on that side of the street.

Nice stay for people on a budget
G W Aug 16, 2009
The hotel is in an excellent location, very central to everything. The staff is very helpful and friendly; however, the ... rooms are very basic. If you are staying in the economy room, expect the bare minimum. There was no table and only one chair, was a bit uncomfortable if you wanted to relax. The bathroom was small, the shower was shaped in a diagonal way where the water didn't directly hit you. But, for the price and location, it was a good deal. If you are spending most of the day/night out, great place. If you plan to relax in the hotel, think about a bigger, less noisy place to stay.

LM Aug 12, 2009
Check in was very quick and staff were friendly and helpful. The hotel is in a location that is close to alot of different ... things that you can walk to or take the trolley. The only complaints would be the bathroom in the room, it was very small and the shower walls were a little gross with stains on them and our balcony overlooked a parking lot. We also noticed security that was looking for smokers on balconies (which is not allowed) were on the grounds smoking themselves. But overall the room was plenty big and the price for the location couldn't be beat.

Overall, the hotel was adequate for our stay. We had good service, and the staff were friendly and accomodating. The ... location was good, many stores and restaurants nearby. We weren't in our rooms that much, since we were busy touring the island. Our room was very small, and if we would have spent any length of time there, it would have been claustrophobic. This hotel was just fine. We hardly saw it untill we wanted to sleep or shower but i'll start with the good things. Big ... comfortable bed, mini fridge, free wireless internet access in the lobby, very friendly staff, gym, balcony perfect for drying our wet towels and bathing suits, grocery store right next to it with 1$ nightly movie rentals, (i brought my laptop to watch them), denny's right across the street with free kids meals on tuesdays, free trolley rides that go to the mall but you can hop on them at any stop to get a ride back to the hotel or get off at any stop you want. Now for the negative, no microwave, small t.v. with very few channels, not the best place to walk around at night because there are "ladies of the night", all up and down the street and side street, kind of awkward when i was passing them with my young daughter, no jacuzzi, no bath tub, small shower fine for us girls but im sure men would have a hard time with it, the elevator is scary at first it stops abruptly, made me a little nautious. But mainly this hotel was just fine, better than a lot of the local hotels but not fancy. They do have security late night so that was good. Be prepared for ridiculously high prices on food at the grocery store, bring whatever you can, cereal is 5$,milk was 3$ for a half gallon. Another crazy thing is the airline actually charged for check bags and did not provide a meal or even peanuts on the 6 hour flight.

Be sure to take a Waikiki city tour by trolley and get off at as many cultural sites as you can set time aside to visit. And, by all means, sign up for several of the Oahu Tours; their drivers are FABULOUSLY KNOWLEDGEABLE and make the outings extremely worthwhile. If you want the best prices on souvenirs go visit the Aloha Stadium open on Wednesday,Saturday And Sunday. they have the worlds largest fleamarket, with mostly new things, but also homemade goods too. We just ask the front desk how to get there and on the back of the map they gave us had that and many more places to see. It was so easy. Just a few steps from hotel's front entrance and we caught a bus for just a couple of dollars each and it drops you off right there. The bus driver gives you a transfer paper and you can shop and before two hours is up you can get back on the bus with this transfer for free to get back to your hotel where you was picked up. How cool is that. And the International Market Place is just steps away from the hotel they also have great shopping and prices. Enjoy your trip.
