Great Vacation for Couples!
Anniv Trip Nov 2, 2009
Loved the hotel. The pool and ocean were fabulous. Great sandy beach location. Hot tub and outside tiki bar overlooking ... ocean were perfect. Great and helpful hotel staff. Premium liquors were poured in liberal quantities. Clean rooms, pools. Food was very good. We liked the child free atmosphere as we were traveling for anniversary. We would definately return to this location.

Do not get sucked in by time share (or whatever they are selling) people that pull you aside while "your rooms is getting prepared" upon check in. If you say yes to an appointment to view thier property they will hunt you down. We made a reservation and then cancelled it and they were very determined. We were more determined not to go - but if you don't have thick skin they could suck up a few hours of your precious vacation time.

Stay away from Market 28. Alot of drunk troublemakers there. We saw three people getting arrested in one day and the deals are not worth the hot bus ride or cab ride. Go to the fleamarket if you want to haggle and deal. The fleamarket is closer and just as cheap with plenty of selection. STAY AWAY FROM MARKET 28......

If you have realistic expectations you will not be dissatisfied! It is not the Ritz, but do you really spend that much time ... in your room while in Mexico anyway?? Rooms clean, Staff was terrific, drinks were good! Food good. Pool nice, and best beach in area! what more can you ask for? Noticed that this was the only hotel in both directions that actually had guests! Hotels on both sides were almost empty! Over a week stay, the guests flow changed from wild to more conservative, so be prepared for both! Just enjoy!! it's Mexico!

Like a retirement home with a good beach
FW Hank Sep 21, 2009
I tried not to believe all the bad reviews that i had read about this hotel. Well, from the minute i walked in and was handed ... a damp towel to wipe the sweat that was dripping off of me in their lobby; i became worried. After listening to the welcome tour in the hot lobby, we went to our hot room with furniture that looked like it was made in the 70's. We had a wonderful view, a great jacuzzi.....and not much else. The bed is small and hard. The TV has basic cable. We got the gold package with jacuzzi on the 6th floor. Our champagne was not on ice and our welcome basket was a couple of fruits and some stale cookies. The A/C in our room was fixed however pretty quickly, But the rest of the hotel was very hot. The outside late night snack area was unbearably hot. Plus all you could order was a hamburger or cheeseburger or some stale nachos. Most importantly, The bars dont open up until 10am and they close at 2am. We had the lights turned off on us while we were having a drink at the bar and were basically told to go to our room. I felt like i was in a retirement home. I like a nice bloody mary ,a red beer ,or screwdriver with breakfast while on vacation and i want it served to me. This will not happen here. Other resorts allow you to drink all day and keep their lights and a/c on all night. The beach is great however. It is small, but has nice sand and clear blue water. Be very Careful getting to the beach as there is a dropoff that is kind of dangerous and some rocks near the dropoff. The food is very bad and i lost weight while on vacation. Every other time i went to Cancun at other resorts , I gained weight because the food was so good i wanted to keep eating. So if you just want a good tan, want to stay sober, and lose weight while feeling trapped in a retirement home in the 70's....this is your place. Nice staff

Great Beach Getaway
Z Sep 8, 2009
We visited the Golden Parnassus over Labor Day Weekend and had a great time. This was our first time at an all-inclusive ... resort and we felt we got a good deal overall. Plenty of activities if you like that sort of thing. We brought a stack of $1's and I'd recommend bringing 10-15 for each day your there. We tipped the maids a few dollars each day, the waiters at dinner, and any bartender if we were going to be getting more than 1-2 drinks from them. We're early 20's and had plenty of fun, I'd say there were two main groups of people: people in their 20's and then the 40+ crowd Room: Our room was nice. Fairly standard but nice hotel room, nothing special but definitely more than sufficient. The cleaning staff does a great job. Beach: The beach front by the hotel is great! There's a bar right on the beach. There are 10-12 thatched shade providing poles and plenty of lounges. It is only 50 ft or so from the hotel steps to the water and the beach is approx this wide all along the hotel zone. The sand is soft and there are many water sport providers right on the beach (NOT included with hotel) for parasailing/etc. The water was great but the slop of the beach and the waves are NOT conducive to good boogie boarding. Pool: We thought the pool was very nice. No swim-up bar which seemed to disappoint a lot of people. As for as swimwear, most was standard US beach stuff, though you did see a few women sunning topless and the occasional speedo. Food: The breakfast/lunch meals didn't have a lot of variety but were good quality each day and we were satisfied with each. 3 of the resort's 4 dinner restaurants are open each night. While we were there, we ate at the Shangri-La, the Barn, and Pier 12 and all were very good. The Shangri-La is the only one with a dress code but is definitely worth it. Check the schedule for which restaurants are open and I'd eat there often. The Barn was good, though they overcook the steaks a bit so order your steak more rare than you normally would. Drinks: Plenty of bars all over the hotel. Great service. Not top shelf booze but it's still good. Beer selection is basically Dos Equis or Corona. Good mixed drinks. ***BRING YOUR OWN WATER BOTTLE*** the glasses they serve you in are about 8 oz but they're happy to fill up something bigger if you bring it.

I really enjoyed the variety of food available at the hotel. The five restaurants located in the hotel, each have a unique ... taste. These restaurants made it fun to dine in at the hotel. The best part is it was all inclusive! Most of my time in Cancun, I spent it out doing excursions and activities outside the hotel. However the time I was there at the hotel I spent it out at the beach, swimming, and soaking up the sunrays. In the evenings I spent it either by the bar or in the yacussi/pool drinking pina coladas. I really didn't feel that anything was missing because I went with friends. So we had each other to entertain ourselves, not to mention all the friendly people I met from different parts of the world. This was an enjoyable trip for me. I had never been to Cancun but I could say for sure that it was one of the best trips I have taken. I would definetly return to Cancun and bring my kids next time.

If you stay at the Golden Parnassus then you also have access to the Great Parnassus, the sister hotel of the Golden Parnassus. This will open up more options to your dining experience. Unfortunately I did not take advantage of this detail because of time. There is a free shuttle that will take you from the Golden Parnassus to the Great Parnassus and back. Another hint: You can also use their facilities. If you are into working out, the Great Parnassus has a much better workout room, by far, than the Golden Parnassus!

This was a nice opportunity for us to relax at the beach. The hotel has an actual beach with lots of sand and no rocks - ... something that other hotels in the hotel zone actually lack! You can go to the sister hotel - Great Parnassus - using the free hotel shuttle and enjoy their amenities for free. The pool-side bar is lively at night and the bartender ([...]) is simply awesome. Not the most modern hotel in the area, but it's not too shabby either. If you absolutely require freezing AC, then the rooms will probably not be for you. The AC did a good enough job for us though.

Not A Happy Camper Aug 21, 2009
In the hotel there was not much to do. I thought they would have more activities going on. I was told they did not do much in ... the lobby because of the noise level. There was not much excitement at night. It seemed that by 10pm everything, including the light in the lobby were turned. The lights in the hallway were also turned off. I could not believe it. The air was not working the first night. There were no fans they could give us. We were changed rooms. That one was little better. They are very clean. We had so many issues as well as other people staying there. I will not stay there again. I believe share the same opinions with others. The bar does not have a big selection. So the variety of drinks you can make limited. We should have stayed at the Riu Caribe again. I do have to say that what made up for the bad was that you are able to go to the sister hotel and eat over there. They also have several nice bars. They have a bar where its only for adults and that was great. Sorry but we were not happy campers here. We really tried our best to try like something. The majority of the employees are nice and helpful. Even though they don't have a huge selection of food, the food there is pretty good.

[...] was a perfect housekeeper and we just loved her little towel animals. The activities staff were always getting the guest involved in games and fun. The food was awesome! the Japanese restaurant was great. The Old Barn had great steaks and the buffet had a great breakfast with a chef taking orders for omelets. I would strongly recommend the Jungle Tour. It was awesome. You take a jet ski through the marina and then you drive through a crocodile infested channel out to the ocean for snorkeling. It was a blast! We met so many great people and cant wait to get back to Mexico. We will always stay at an adult-only resort from now on. There was a great mixture of ages in the couples. There were 20 year old's and there were 70 year old's. I can't forget [...] and the rest of the staff at the breakfast buffet. They were so nice. Room service was just as good. AAAAAA+++++++++++ T

Great Staff but lousy pool & room A/C
Greased from pool and hot from no A/C Jul 25, 2009
Great staff. Great all-inclusive food @ 4 in-hotel restaurants. Great location. Good, clean beach. Warm water. Beyond ... that, hotel should be imploded right now and start over but keep the staff please!!! A/C in rooms will not work - can't keep up - sweat running off of us at 1 am because rooms facing west at sundown don't have a chance at having the A/C keep up. We were told it was the sensors to turn controls down not up but that did not help. A/C would prevent us from going back. Now to the pool. Great activities but small 3' pool full of nice but drunk people and mainly full of a sheen of grease from the sunscreen/oil that comes off of the people's bodies - it was gross. We felt dirty every time we got out of the pool - a coat of grease. Pool & A/C are the big downer on this hotel, plus it is OLD. Night-time activities are enjoyable only if completely drunk - but daytime activities are great and the female pool activity director is a first-class, customer-oriented, involve anyone kind of host you would want at a 5 star resort or cruise liner she is great!!!! Food too is great and service too. Steak, Japanese, Seafood, or the fancy Shangri-la which is world-class but small portions. Also watch out for promotions of a variation on timeshare where if you go to another hotel they try to sell you a book of discount tickets for hotels around the world for the small price of - get this - $ 59,000+ USD (yes fifty nine thousand dollars!). I got so angry when they finally got to the price I told the salesman what a waste of my precious vacation time. If a person could afford $ 59,000+ on future vacations, why couldn't they afford the full price at the hotels of choice, not pay that for discounts at only member/select hotels you only see a picture of in a sales book? That was biggest waste of our time was going to that but there was high pressure in lobby of Golden Parnassus to go on that sales trip and receive a 500 peso coupon so we mistakenly went. Topless at pool - one per day - I wonder if she was paid to be there. Topless at beach - yes on 1 day out of 6. Overall about 1/2 European and 1/2 USA and a few from SA or Spain but many loud UK folks a little drunk by 11 am in pool. I would never go back...unless miraculously they implode this dump & place the staff at a NICE hotel and tell me so, then will go for sure. If keep the existing pool use it to grease a pig in that pool because it is unclean for humans until/unless they are so drunk they don't know any better.......
Traveler type: Couples
Beach is much, much better than pool. Go to beach for water & sun at the beginning - avoid pool. Go to pool for recreational activities EARLY, but more drunks as the day progresses and a grease job from the residual sunscreens/oils in the pool. 10 AM volleyball is good - try to make that at pool - 3 PM volleyball not as good and pool is greasier by then (the sheen on it). Pool is small, unclean and too shallow (3' only) and overcrowded. But the pool activities director and staff are great so it is a shame they don't have a better facility to work with. At night find your own recreation as what they offer is a joke unless you are really, really drunk by then. I hope they implode this hotel, build a decent one with pool and A/C that work, and keep the staff. But blow away the timeshare-type offer $ 59,000+ for a discount on future hotel stays yes in US dollars not pesos - what a joke that sales offer/trip was and waste of time. STAY ON THE BEACH THAT IS THE BEST. GO THERE FIRST AND YOU WON'T BE DISAPPOINTED. There is a bar right on the beach. And nice clean water there (as opposed to the greasy pool).

Spend the money and take a taxi if you want to go to the clubs or markets. The bus is cheap but very crowded and hot.

Bring your own big cup or buy one at the hotel gifts shop ($6us) With the all-inclusive package drinking glasses were really small so to keep from have to get a new one so often just take your own to the bar they will fill it up no problem

Playa de Carmen is a must see. You can shop endlessly, then eat at Ocean front and relax in the beach. Awsome place.

Instead of paying for a catamaran to snorkel in Isla Mujeras simply take the ferry across. Just as beautiful and you can eat where you want (instead of the luke warm buffet they have waiting outside for you) and shop where you want and take your time. Rent you a scooter when you get there and ask for snorkeling or just go shopping or sightseeing. Whatever you want to do. The catamaran takes you into deep water where it is hard to enough to enjoy the snorkeling and they only stay about 20 minutes. After that you are on a tight schedule to eat and leave again to go somewhere else to shop which also is very limited due to the schedule. The scooter rental is all day and you can snorkel, eat and shop as much or as long as you want for a fraction of the cost.

We wanted to do some shopping for gifts, so we wnet to Market 28.Turns out, the gifts in the hotel shops were cheaper, and we di not have to deal with the agressive sales people at the market.
