Expect Low Service, Bad Food, and Slow

Upon arrival at JFK area for hotel shuttles, we had to wait over 30 minutes - every other local hotel's shuttle passed twice ... during this time. The driver did not greet us on the way in or out. The check-in was awful - the lady was cursing and yelling at another employee. Overall it was awful - even for an airport hotel.

I wanted to buy souvenirs for several friends and co-workers, but also needed to control my spending. HINT: Be on the lookout for low-cost street- and store-vendor T-shirt sellers. Found a variety of quality NYC-themed T-shirts for as little as $ 2.50 a piece (8 for $20). You can also spend up to $30 or more for more elaborate designs---but BEWARE. At "Billy Elliott", they wanted this kind of money for a T-shirt, but I decided that these shirts were actually quite plain and NOT worth the cost. Felt the same way about the pictorial program for "Next to Normal". I won't pay a lot of money for "average" merchandise.

Unhappy stay at Ramada Plaza Hotel JFK
Ann Nov 16, 2009
This hotel had pretty bad service. The water was always cold so I could not get a warm bath and had to take cold showers ... three days in a row. The vending machine was out of order and the ice machine didn't work properly. Unable to order room service for lunch and not many options for breakfast menu. The hotel advertised coffee maker in the room, but there was none. The bed was old and worn looking, carpet not clean, no hangers for clothes, took me forever to get a taxi by phone as the lobby service would not answer the phone, I finally had to call the reception desk in order to get a cab. The bus driver for the shuttle was rude. Check out time is ridiculous.

Bad experience in Jamaica
Henry Nov 11, 2009
This hotel needs to be closed for a complete overhaul or it needs to be torn down. the rooms and hallways were dingy, the air ... conditioning did not work, the bathrooms were small with leaking faucets. On both occasions that I stayed there I got a call from the front desk in the middle of the night asking me to keep the phone of the hook so they could do repairs to the phone lines. The restaurant food was virtually inedible and overpriced. The staff though was friendly and efficient. Alltogether I am amazed that Ramada allows this hotel to operate under their name.

My stay at Ramada JFK
Dr. Scott, PharmD Nov 8, 2009
The airport location, while requiring a subway commute to Manhattan, was VERY convenient for arrival and departure. I didn't ... get a chance to try the hotel dinner buffet (6p to midnight!!!), but my two friends both enjoyed it, for a cost of $25. However, the hotel is in a relatively remote location on JFK property and to eat anywhere else requires a car, cab, AIRTRAIN and/or subway ride. Enjoyed the experience of being a commuter into Manhattan. Also GREATLY enjoyed the chance to explore other boro's (or buroughs--I saw BOTH spellings while there.), including Queens and Brooklyn. Also ventured into the Bronx to attend a church service (after meeting a subway preacher at the Time Square station). Ran out of time to visit Staten Island, but the Brooklyn Museum was QUITE impressive. Enjoyed their headliner rock and roll photography exhibit as well as their dedicated feminist art section, including the famous "Dinner Party" by artist Judy Chicago. Didn't make it to the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens, nor the Queens and Bronx zoos--I've put these back on my list for next time. Enjoyed several broadway shows, including "A Steady Rain", "Next to Normal", and "Billy Elliott", as well as "Aida" at the Metropolitan Opera (fantastic!!!).

i have not stayed in any other hotels around jfk so i cannot compare, but for the price ($100 per night) i expected more. the ... room was shabby at best, part of the welcome guide was ripped up, the bed blanket had to be decades old and shower temperature fluctuated between cold and lukewarm (this was the worst thing for me, a hot shower is critical). at first i thought it was cool you could order pizza hut to your room, but it turns out after order charge, tax and mandatory service charge the cheapest small pizza you can get still comes to $20+, and the hotel restaurant is of a similar price range. i arrived around 9pm and the staff were not welcoming, nobody was behind me in the queue but it seemed like they wanted to get rid of me asap. free wifi was ok, but not super fast, and i had to phone front desk to get the password. it also boasts of being the only hotel on jfk grounds or something but i don't see what the big deal is, the shuttle bus went past many other hotels on the way from jfk to this one. there was a cool looking place inside called the millennium cafe 2000 but sadly this was closed. i wish i paid rock bottom for the worst, cheapest hotel because it wouldn't have made much difference.

Convenient location and not much else
Fatima Oct 27, 2009
The staff was friendly and efficient, and my check in was smooth. The shuttle arrived in a timely manner, and the hotel ... location is ideal for connecting flights. The rooms could use cleaning and remodeling. The drapes and carpets were stained, furniture quite old, and the bedding strained from use. The blankets were rough and really old, and there was barely any soap or shampoo in the bathroom (one shampoo bottle and one bar of facial soap). I'd only recommend this hotel if you absolutely had nowhere else to stay, and you really needed the convenience of quick access to the hotel.

Tired Business Traveler Oct 21, 2009
We had to check in late and there was a party going on. Busy, loud lobby- but check-in was good. UNTIL we got to the room ... and the keys didn't work. Pizza Hut food (from room service) was horrible and we did not sleep as next door neighbors were with the party and loud all night. We checked out at 3am with no sleep. Recommend it because it is close to airport, free shuttle and parking was included for the week..

Hotel check-in was easy and the staff was friendly, but the facilities and rooms are a bit run down. Still, it's so ... convenient to JFK and the price was reasonable, I'd probably stay there again if I had an early AM flight out of JFK.

When we first arrived at the hotel, it was fairly late at night, and we were hungry. We didn't want to eat at the hotel, so we went out in search of food. To make a long story short, even though New York is the "city that never sleeps" all of the decent restaurants in JFK and the surrounding area apparently do sleep. If you want a dining experience after 9-10pm that is worth the price, you need to go to Manhattan.
