San Francisco Thanksgiving Visit 2009
TPA Nov 30, 2009
The front desk staff were very nice and helpful - especially [...]. Nice location within walking distance of alot of sights. ... The rooms were small but enjoyable and comfortable. The interior is in need of some cosmetic maintenance. No fan in the bathroom resulted in some humidity after showering. Windows can be opened but do not lock in place - watch your fingers! The continental breakfast was good (coffee, juice, milk, cereal, danish, bagels and bread) with a small variation each day. Location was small dining room (capacity of 20?) that offers what seems to be a very nice lunch and dinner menu. Small lobby with extremely limited lounge area. Nothing but Horrible
FS Nov 11, 2009
It was a horrible experience. The sink was clogged. Worst hotel I have ever stayed. No air ventilation. Extremely small ... room. No extra power outlets. I have long hair and the hair dryer in the room was totally lousy, did not work properly and switching on the hair dryer would dim the lights (power fluctuation). We felt miserable to return to the room at night to get sleep. The European look is hardly worth mentioning. You can get better option for the same price. Long walk to the closest cable car station.

Get close to the Heart of San Francisco
Andy and family Nov 3, 2009
The hotel is located approx 10 mins walk from Union square, however note some of the hills are steep in san francisco. The ... price is very good for the location compared with the bigger chains. The hotel is clean but a little tired in its appearence with bathrooms (the usual grouting and tile type issue)and carpets etc needing a refresh Being in a centre it can be noisy with the sound of city life, there is no secondary glazing or air con so windows need to be open and hence the noise is noticable. The staff were mainly very helpful, although the reception on arrival was slow and suggested we were unexpected, however we ended up with an extra room for the same price to accomodate the family group. the breakfast is simple but helps to save a few dollars during the trip.
Traveler type: Family
Eat on the top floor at Macys department store in Union Square. I would not usually recommend a chain but the cheesecake factory is a great location and reasonably priced. You will need to walk back afterwards to use some of the calories if you have the cheesecake!

Nob Hill Hotel is a great place to stay. Close to everything, safe, staff is friendly and helpful. The room was cute, the ... amenities great and the atmosphere wonderful. The only think I would change would be the free "continental" breakfast, it was more like danishes and bagels, not even cereal or fruit! I would definitely go back though.

The first day we arrived we went to see our daughter who lives in the area. On the way back we heard and saw a lot of fire ... engines and police going somewhere. This turned out to be the Hotel. A fire had started on the roof and the top floor of the hotel building. It was cold but we couldn't get back into the hotel for several hours. The fire turned out to be minor. However, the hotel did smell of smoke for several days, the television didn't work at all becasue of the fire and the windows, into common areas, were kept open to get rid of the smell. People who booked directly with the hotel were given credit or other things. The hotel did offer to make accomodations somewhere else if we wanted. We decided to stay. Since we had prepaid through [...] the hotel was not able to give us what was offered to others. They did allow us to stay one day for free, over our original booking. The Hotel was in a good location for us and we walked just about everywhere while staying there. The room we had was on the smaller side, though it had everything we needed.

NO ROOM AT THE INN
Frequent SF Traveler Oct 6, 2009
I arrived in San Francisco at 11pm did not get to the Nob Hill Hotel until 12 midnite, and was told that they had no record ... of my booking. Instead of immediately finding me a room I was asked to wait until 1 30am to see if another guest was going to arrive, if Not I could have that room. Mind you I am from the east coast so to me this is like 3am. I had to walk the streets of SF till 1 am and was told at that time, I could have the room, so I go up to the room, then get a call immediately, that the guest arrived and I will have to go to their sister hotel. So the hotel did pay for my cab fare which was nice but was shipped to a very small room at their sister hotel. The best thing about this hotel was the location which was better for me. The initial room for the first nite was like a closet, but I was then moved to a bigger room, which was clean and on a busy steet so noise level was loud at times. They did offer breakfast which was nice, however, the room where we ate was often full of fruit flies all over the food not a pleasant thing to see. The health facility offer is non existent, so not sure why that is even mentioned in their ad.. Other than these concerns the trip was nice, and the hotel was fine considering the evening I arrived, the rooms were cleaned everyday, and I did like the location.

No free newspaper as stated above, it would have been handy to read. Walking distance to buses, or you could walk if you're ... younger than me. The blocks are twice as long as my home town's, so $2 bus rides were a necessity, but they ran often & late at night & the transfers were usually for several hours. Near downtown. 2 grocery stores nearby to keep soft drinks & snacks (had frig & microwave in my room). The Italian restaurant attached, Columbini, was fabulous, ate there 3 nights in a row, some of the best pasta I've ever had. The cont. breakfast (held in the restaurant) had cereal only once during the 4 mornings I ate there, but plenty of toast, bagels & pastries, milk, OJ, coffee. Front desk person on my 1st day gave me incorrect directions to the Walt Disney Family Museum (there's a Montgomery St downtown, as well as in the Presidio, where the museum is), but thanks to a friendly bus driver I managed to get there on time anyway. Room & decor is bordering on the cheesey, but I thought it was nice they tried & at least it wasn't boring! Very clean room. TV only had about a dozen channels, including HBO at least, so I saw a film I'd missed one night. If I get to return to SF, will definitely stay here again.

You really need to take buses in huge downtown area to give you the time to look at all the shops, restaurants, etc. Only $2 w/transfer for at least 2 hrs, usually more (they may give more time on weekdays presuming you are going to work). I checked the map & walked over 80 blocks my 2nd day, so it was buses after that!

about 5 blocks from cable car; and 6-7 to the sighting hop- on off pick up point. European Flavor in San Francisco
ARF Sep 10, 2009
Our encountering many European and student guests confirmed for us the European flavor of this quaint hotel. We enjoyed ... meeting guests at morning coffee, evening wine tasting, and waiting for the old-world style elevator. We didn't mind our small room since we spent almost no time there. Who would linger in a hotel room in fantastic San Francisco, particularly when the California Cable Car Line is only 2 blocks away on level easily walked streets. The hotel restaurant will not disappoint you either; an intimate personal atmosphere, wide choice of very well prepared food, and personally friendly service.
Traveler type: Couples
Ride the Cable Cars during the week because the weekend lines for getting back on Cable Cars can be daunting. Also think about buying a three day pass for $18 rather than buying one-day passes for $11 each. You can get almost anywhere in NE San Fran via Cable.

This was my 2nd stay ... it was as lovely as the 1st. This hotel is a little-known gem. I come to S.F. 2-3 times a year and ... have stayed in many hotels (a few considerably more expensive)and the Nob Hill, is by far, my best experience. The location is fabulous (esp. if you like to walk) as is the staff. The rooms combine elegance w/modern necessity and a high standard of cleanliness. On my next trip, the Nob Hill will be my FIRST HOTEL CHOICE.

One block up and several over (to your right) take you to Powell and a Cable Car that will take you down to Market. From Market the F trolly will take you to the Wharf (BTW - there's much more to see than just Pier 39). However, I've walked this route (I'm 58) and enjoy it a lot. If you skip the Cable car for a moment and walk past Powell a few more blocks you'll come to China Town (look for the Gates). From there, you walk down and, again, you hit Market and can get transportation to anywhere in the City. I suggest getting the Cable car UP Powell from Market to the top of Nob. The views and architecture are among the best in the City and, that way you can walk DOWN to the hotel.

I had a prepaid vacation pkg & when I arrived the hotel didn't have me registered & said they didn't have an account with ... Orbitz. Also they said I had to pay for the hotel....so it took 2 days to straighten out. I had to call Orbitz & they talked w/ hotel & everything was fine after. The hotel did put a $300 hold on my debit card which put a little damper on spending due to lack of back up funds. The last day it was credited so I was glad to see that...because I wasn't sure exactly what the hotel was really doing. Other than that the stay was nice, my only other complaint would be that 2+ blocks south is addict/homeless central some would wonder up by hotel but were harmless. Do not venture south walking though...it's pretty disturbing to see the despair. The hotel has a nice Italian bistro & the continental breakfast isn't too bad. On Sutter one block down there seems to be some nice breakfast places & Saint Raphaels thrift shop was nice too, all $ goes to homeless. Also Glide Memorial Church is awesome! Best Gospel choir ever they also help all the one's on the street too. You may want to take a taxi there because it's on the edge of Tenderloin also.
