Great hotel, bring some snacks
Silent Bald Oct 25, 2009
Can't beat this hotel for access to great beaches, including Fairmont's own private beach. This is a sprawling resort with ... great amenities, all tied together with a complimentary trolly service, which connects you to the beach, restaurants and free Hamilton ferry. We were given a free room upgrade upon check in, which bumped us up to a room with an ocean view, as well as a view of the neighboring Gibb's Lighthouse. Room was clean, well equiped and well maintained. Service was generally very good. The only problem with this hotel was that you really needed to travel at length to avoid falling into the rut of buying ALL of your meals and drinks on site, which could lead to a painful bill at the end of your stay. Fairmont restaurants are very good but a little pricey (Bacci was excellent though). I'd really recommend bringing snacks (and booze!) with you. Request a free refrigerator for your room, mix a few of your own drinks, and enjoy the view from your balcony . . . at least every OTHER day. Found it funny that the mini bar prices matched those of the bar downstairs, both very high. Hotel would benefit from a coffee bar in the lobby and wider access to the spa pool and gym. A cheaper, family style, breakfast restaurant would go a long way too. $40 for breakfast can get old quickly. Rent a scooter, do some of your own shopping and you'll be very happy at this place!

[...] our total price was $200/night including all fees and taxes, so for the price we paid it was a GREAT deal (otherwise ... we would not rate as high a score, but we got such a good value). We went for the harbor view upgrade room on the 5th floor and it was worth the extra $. The pool and shuttle systems were great. Take the ferry into Hamilton and you can get anywhere from there. Taxi rides cost about $25 to get into town. The ferry was easy and cost nothing and took 25 minutes.
Traveler type: Friends
two pieces of advice: first, if you go to the beach, try horseshoe beach which is just next door to the hotel beach. Drinks, food, etc are much less and the beach is larger. you can still take the shuttle. Second, take the shuttle down to waterlot and walk east about 10 minutes to a grocery store where you can buy wine, beer, and food items

great hotel, lovely location
K-and-A Oct 19, 2009
We stayed here for three nights and it was fabulous. The room was lovely, great view of the harbor. (Only complaint: the tv ... is tiny, with a lousy picture.) We signed up for the meal plan which was a good deal - very good buffet breakfast and then a choice of any of the seven restaurants for dinner. The Waterlot and Bacci's were delicious. We walked along the coastal path to Warwick Long Bay, went up the lighthouse near the hotel (an easy walk to get there), and snorkeled down the road at Church Bay (we took a taxi). Our whole experience was terrific!
Traveler type: Couples
The meal plan through the hotel turned out to be a good deal, even though we were skeptical at first. The breakfast buffet is very good, and the restaurants are excellent. We took fruit, bagels, yogurt, etc along with us from the breakfast buffet, and ate that for a light lunch. Saved us lots of money and meant that we were really hungry for our delicious dinner!

Great and close escape
Ted Oct 14, 2009
What I did @ hotel: - Went to the beach, spa, and restaurants. The beach is extraordinary and the amenities at the beach ... complement the natural beauty. The spa is respected and the service was competent. The ambiance of the is incredibly peaceful and ideal way to relieve stress. The restaurant was very good and pricing competitive for the country. I did not think anything was missing except the check-in process was long. Unfortunately we arrived as a convention was convening but arrival times of flights are clustered and additional staff could be recurited for those moments. Other than the check-in we thoroughly enjoyed the trip.

The country has an extensive rails-to-trails National Park. I was passed by a few folks using it as a exercise track but my wife and I enjoyed just walking on it. It was unique simply because it was the only place on the island that we encountered litter. Frankly, I got tired of pristine and this was a relief.

Overall the hotel was exceptional in every respect. The locational is very good with good access to the best areas of ... Bermuda. Their free shuttle service was very convenient and well run.Food at the resort restaurants was good , but probably not worth the high price. For example, I was charged twelve dollars for bottled water that could be purchased at my local supermarket for less than two dollars. This is my fourth trip to Bermuda and one of my reasons for returning is the fact that people there are extremely friendly and helpful to visitors. The staff at the Southampton reinforced this feeling at every opportunity.

If you like the island of Bermuda, and I do, the Fairmont Southampton is an excellent choice. Even though I booked a moderte ... room, I could find no fault with this spotless, large room with a view and all the amenities, incuding a large bathroom. Overall the hotel lives up to its luxury reputation. As for location, the free trolley service will get you to all the bus lines to tour around the island, and runs all the time. And you have the benefits of their beautiful beach, which by the way, is right next to one of the best beaches on the island, Horseshoe Beach. The restaurants on the grounds are very good, but to eat out anywhere else, especially at dinner, does require taxi to and from, which can get expensive, which is worth noting. But the quiet and beauty of the location was worth this minor inconvenience.

Other reviews noted that the beach at the hotel had a ton of seaweed in the water; this was true for us one day. A good way around this was walking to the public beach at Horseshoe Bay, just a 3 minute walk from the hotel's beach, which had a protected cove, and clear blue water.

SJ Sep 28, 2009
Before we booked this hotel I read the reviews and was a little concerned about service - but it was very good. No problems ... in the hotel or in any of the restaurants - and we ate in 5 of them. Only issues that we had were with noise in the hallway on Saturday night - it didn't quiet until about 5:00. Make sure that your room is as far away from the elevators as possible, the hotel is definitely not soundproof. Other issue that we had (well, not just us) - the hotel lost water for some 8-12 hours from Sunday afternoon into Monday morning. Can't describe how happy we were to get up and find the water working. We enjoyed the hotel and its facilities, would stay again - just at the end of the hall!
