Pros * Nice view if your room faces the ocean. If you have a marina view, do not expect any "views" * Mostly friendly staff * ... Romantic settings * Many chain restaurants around (if this is a plus for you) Cons * Expensive rate for what it is * $20/night parking, and then you would still have to walk quite a bit from the car to the hotel. Because of the reataurant, it is very difficult to get a spot that is semi close to enterance. * Thinnest walls on the earth! * Far from highways * can't use the fridge unless you are purchasing an over priced item in it. I appreciated the housekeepers, and as long as I could see, they did a good job. However, the first thing I found as I walked into the room was a huge spider. Room is not very big at all if you get a standard room. During night, I could hear coughing from the next door. At 5 30 in the morning, I could hear his phone conversation very cleary- word to word. I almost felt bad going to a bathroom at night thniking that it would bother other guests. It may be a good hotel for couples' romantic getaways if you are ready to spend some bucks on nicer rooms, their restaurant, and parking. I would not recommend this hotel to business travelers. Whenever I used their "business room", the printers were out of paper. When they were told about it, instead of feeding the paper themselves, they simply handed the paper to me. This is not the kind of service I was expecting from where they charge 250 bucks for the cheapest room they have.

The hotel staff was incredibly courteous and helpful. And the location was perfect for everything we needed to do during a ... busy Halloween weekend. It also offered us a great walk to nearby eateries and sight seeing when we actually had some downtime. The hotel restaurant, Baleen, served some of the best fish & chips and chowder we've had. We were even given a $25 dining voucher along with our room, so it was a great deal, too!

My wife and I have spent our last 2 wedding anniversaries (30th and 31st) here. We love the beach but the hotel is nestled ... between Redondo Beach Pier and Hermosa Beach with Manhattan Beach a short bike ride to the north. We have a very romantic weekend watching the sunsets and walking the beaches.

OK hotel not worth the price!
Ordinary Traveler Sep 12, 2009
This was my first time at this hotel so I didn't really know what to expect. First, the hotel is at the end of a pier with a ... marina on one side and a harbor facing the ocean with sea lions on the other. I would highly recommend a room on the harbor side. Our reservations were made with the cheaper marina view room however, the pool was closed that day (and of course we were not informed of that at check in) so, they gave us an upgrade to a harbor side room on the 3rd floor after we complained. The room was nicer and was more roomy then the first one. There were just a lot of little things that added up to make this hotel experience not that great. The hotel demagnitized our room keys and we had to get them replaced, some of the towels were not replaced in our room by housekeeping, and the hotel in general just smelled bad. They have humidity issues and it just smelled bad in the hallways, the rooms, and elevator. The elevator looked very old and scary we used the stairs mostly. It looked like the hotel was remodeled within the past 5 years or so but other than the lobby (the lobbly looked just like the pictures on their website) the remodel looked very superficial and incomplete. If you looked really close at the paint on the walls or the tile jobs in the bathrooms you could easily see that some more work needed to be done. Also, the food at the restaurant was very delicious and the service was wonderful. So, overall it is a nice hotel but not worth the price or the 4 star rating. I would stay there only if I absolutely had to stay on the water as the beach is a good 15 minute walk away.

Just Ok
Luv2Travel Sep 5, 2009
This hotel was just okay. It was definitely overpriced for what it was. The location was pretty good and the views as ... well. They were like a 3 star hotel trying to act like a 5 star one though. For example, they had a mini bar in the room with extremely overpriced food & drink but no vending machine to buy things at a normal price. Every time you wanted a towel, you had to call the front desk and then it took quite a while for them to bring one. Also, there were prices on almost everything in the room saying, for example, that if the towel wasn't there when you left, you would be charged $25. The rooms were impractical with virtually no drawers to store your clothes and just set up weird. Service was not that great either. Hot tub was not warm and didn't work while we were there for 8 days. Beds were VERY comfortable though.

We were visiting for a wedding on the beach. The staff, facility, location, rooms, service at the Portofino were all great! ... The location was within walking distance to our wedding, many restaurants, shops, beach and pier. Complimentary beach cruiser bicycles were also provided by the hotel. Room was very clean and comfortable for the 3 people traveling in our party. In fact, we liked our room so much, that when we heard the couple getting married was simply going back to there own place in Torrance after the wedding, we decided to treat them to a night at the Portofino as a wedding gift! They too were quite pleased! Only downside was a very large power plant close by, which emitted a really load noise for about 15 minutes one morning, but understandably this was out of the hotel's control.

Get a taste of the good life while staying at The Portofino Hotel. Minutes away from the strand and popular Hermosa Pier, ... the Portofino is our favorite place to stay. Will NOT reserve here again....
Teresa K Jun 22, 2009
I made the reservation at the Portofino for my daughter in-law and two grandchildren because, She wanted to get the whole ... vacation experience during her visit to california. I called the hotel the day before her arrival to confirm her late check in and to assure the crib was in their room upon arrival. The lady that checked us in, was extremly rude to my us. The "crib" was not in the room and the bell guy didn't have a clue where to find one. BTW, the bellguy was very sweet. So he finds the "crib" which was a portable playpen. When it came time to check out they tried to charge my DIL, $24.00 a day plus tax for parking even when she didn't have a car the entire trip. Once again, the woman checking us out was extremly rude as well. I offered to talk to her manager and she changed her toned quickly. She finally adjusted the parking bill to $8.00 per day for three nights as stated during our check in. BTW, the rooms are really really small, however the beds were comfy according to my DIL. I live very close to this hotel and it's really beautiful but if you can't afford or don't want to pay for an ocean view room and go through directly through the hotel to reserve don't bother. Other than the bell guy's and valet the rest of the staff are extremmly rude, even the housekeepers (They saw us walking down the hall with two small children and boatload of luggage but still left cleaning two carts in the hallway then walked away themselves. All in all very inconsiderate.

we were looking for a hotel on (or near) the ocean, so we booked an ocean-view room in this hotel for 3 nights. the hotel's ... location was perfect and within walking distance to many local attractions; its interior/exterior decor simply beautiful; and its staff was very professional & friendly. our room was a lot larger than standard, beautifully decorated, very comfortable, & clean. valet parking was provided (at the same cost of self-parking), as well as free bicycle rentals (which we took advantage of -- riding 22 scenic miles from Redondo Beach to Venice Beach and back!). we would HIGHLY recommend this hotel to family & friends, and will DEFINITELY stay there again! Wonderful Getaway
World Traveler May 30, 2009
Traveled to California for an event and decided to stay in the L.A. Beach community to change things up a little. The hotel ... was fabulous as far as scenery, room rate, dining, etc.. The name of the hotel was The Portofino Hotel & Yacht Club, however, each yacht is privately owned and guests are not allowed to go on excursions, which was a little teasing b/c the yachts are such an attraction that anyone would ask to go out for a light sail. Overall, I have no complaints. In comparison to other hotels occupied, it is great for individuals traveling on business, couples & friends. It would be a nice feature for the hotel being on the marina if they could make previsions available for guests that would like to go out into the water for canoeing, sailing, etc., I know I would have loved it.

Everyone here was very friendly, I was greeted by name every time I returned for the day. The rooms were very clean and comfortable and very relaxing.
