The good, the bad, the ugly
Disappointed Oct 1, 2009
We went to San Fransisco purely to go to Alcatraz. Alcatraz itself was a fantastic experience. The tour is very affordable ... and I would highly recommend it to everyone that goes to San Fransisco. As for the hotel we stayed in, I was not impressed at all. Firstly, I feel it was extremely overpriced for what you get. The room was very small, the parking lot was small and cars needed to be moved around constantly. Upon arrival, you are made to sign a form agreeing to pay for the valet parking. The receptionist expected me to sign without reading the form as she kept pointing to the form and telling me to sign, while I was trying to read what it was I was signing. She had not explained what the form was prior. You must leave your car keys in order for the valet staff to do this. The fine print (which you don't get to read before they take your keys and car) states that if there is anything missing from your vehicle or any damage done to it, you must fill out a written report prior to moving the vehicle from the lot. therefore you must take the time to inspect your vehicle TOTALLY before you go off to enjoy your planned activities(providing there is nothing to report). If there is an issue, you will more than likely miss out on your day's activities I found this to be rather annoying. I found that the manager of the hotel was extremely rude and unprofessional, after he rode in on a motorbike, waited for me to park my car ( staff had prearranged a spot for me), then approached me and told me to move my car. I had no idea who this person was as he did not introduce himself. He did not give me a chance to explain that the supervisor had arranged for me to park in that spot. He just insisted that I moved the car. Eventually he heard that it had been prearranged and he allowed me to park where I was. But that was only after I asked for a refund/cancellation of the booking. I have travelled all around Australia and this was my second visit to The States and I have never felt this disappointed in a hotel and the way in which it operates.

Mediterranean Style?
Dave Sep 30, 2009
Mediterranean Style rooms, might be a stretch, but a beautifully re-done older "motor-lodge" style Motel. I'd call "50's ... chic! Would have given four stars if rooms had been equipt with REAL coffee makers (came with instant coffee, YUCK!) and air-conditioning (an unusually hot Sept. weekend). Very clean and well kept. I would stay again. THanks.

A block away at 7th and Howard is a great deli/restaurant called Tony Baloney's. It has incredible sandwiches, salads and breakfast sandwiches for about $5-6. They also have tasty coffee, smoothies, fresh fruit and cookies. You can get a delicious and healthy lunch for two for about $15. A real bargain.

Our Honeymoon
Blushing Bride Aug 11, 2009
We spent 4 days in SF on our honeymoon. We went to several museums, to Chinatown, to the Wharf, and even to an Oakland A's ... baseball game. The hotel is a block or so away from Market street, which makes making Muni connections a breeze. We took a cab a few times (tired feet!, but the fare wasn't ever more than $8 since the Americania was close to everything we wanted to do.

Creature of the Night Jun 18, 2009
This place is awesome. Just a short walk from F Line, BART and train stations. Chinatown, Financial District and other points ... of interest are just a short walk away. No need to rent a car. The cost of the best thing! It was not expensive at all and the art-deco room included free wireless internet. Some people complain on here about the homeless... Reality check: "Downtown, Anywhere, CA" = wandering homeless people. Even downtown Santa Monica has its share. They are harmless. It's a cool little place at a safe, convenient area. I love SF and I can't wait to visit again!

Not far from Castro's nightlife! Just hop on the F Line on the corner of Market/7th. For just $1.50 it takes you str8 to all the Castro has to offer. No need to rent a car, since the area has subways, trains, cable cars and buses that take you anywhere. Make sure you carry change at all times so you won't over pay. Cab rides are inexpensive due to the short distance to most points of interest.

Hotel room, double beds, was spotless clean. Staff were courteous and not nosey. Good place to eat burgers and milkshakes ... were addicting. Don't need a car, just pay 20.00 for parking. Sounds expensive but it was cheapest deal in comparison to other hotel parking arrangments.

Easy walk to Market Street to F streetcase and to vistor center. Vistors must go to Theatro Zandini on Pier 39 by F Steet Car. We bought the citypass and it was worth its price , it far exceeded its price tag. We rode the cable cars everyday and saved $$$ with the city pass. the WHARF is a mess of nothingness, dont waste your time there. Go to the beach or the museums instead. Dont eat at the downstairs food court in the fancy mall on Market Street. It costs too much and is just boring. Take your time and go to Mamas or Universal Cafe Mission Districts. I will return to San Francisco for another vacation.

Fun and Funky
Lauren Jan 1, 2009
The Best Western Americana is very hip. There is a 1950s retro theme throughout the hotel. The best part about the hotel was ... the room itself. We had a queen bed, and a seperate living room area with a TV. The decor is so fun, and little touches, such as board games on the walls, as well as dice with dice games on the coffee table, make this a fun place to stay. I would consider this hotel for an extended stay, because they have laundry facilities in the lobby area. It is not really walking distance to union square, etc. But for anything in SOMA, this hotel is in a great location! We will return!

If you value quiet
Edward Dec 19, 2008
This hotel has undergone a complete renovation inside and out-- Renovation is very stylish, and housekeeping seemingly ... upgraded to keep up. Also, rooms are very large. Here's the thing about the Americania: it has the old motor-hotel layout, with all the rooms in a ring facing inward, except that the inside is a courtyard instead of a parking lot, AND the ring is closed (four sides). This means no windows facing the street, and no street noise penetrating at all. If you've ever staid in San Francisco, you know how valuable this is. Prices went up with the renovation, and they no longer offer free parking, which was a big perk. But with the higher prices, they are now competing with a better class of hotels than before. Certainly don't pay more to stay here than you would for one of the fancy high-rises.

Other than us, all the guests in the hotel were large tour groups, and even an Elderhostel week which used a room for their ... buffet dining spread, with the guests wandering around that room eating dinner. The pool would go from empty to 20 kids in it, when the bus got back. The lobby and restaurant was under construction. Check-in was done in a large closet in the parking garage!
