Reasonable rates & great location
Vronni Dec 2, 2009
Our suite had two queen beds - great for a family of four - a kitchen with a full-size fridge & dishes & silverware, a ... bathroom with a great showerhead, plus another room with a vanity table, chair & mirror. Excellent suite for a very reasonable price. The Lincoln Memorial is 3 blocks away, the White House 4, and the Smithsonian complex 6 blocks away. Near enough to walk, though we were tired at the end of the day. We could see the Capitol a bit farther than the Smithsonian, but didn't make the trek. Also within walking distance was the Ford Theater, in an area with shops and restaurants. Subway & Starbucks were a block away, and a 24-hour CVS right next door, with enough groceries to make the kitchen useful. Federal buildings are nearby as well. The State Department is across the street, and the Justice Department and others not far away. Staying at the State Plaza made our first family trip to DC an enjoyable time. We'll be back!

The State Plaza is at the edge of the George Washington University campus where I was attending a conference. It's ideal for ... GWU but it's also close to the Foggy Bottom (orange and blue) Metro station. If you find a good price at the State Plaza, I'd recommend it for DC tourists or business travelers. The hotel is fairly easy walking distance to the White House and minutes by Metro to all the attractions. Other writers have differed on proximity to restaurants and I think I know why. If you walk east toward the White House you're in a sea of giant federal and other admin buildings with no commerce to speak of. But if you walk north from the hotel's F Street entry along 21st Street, you're a scant three blocks from the 2000 Pennsylvania complex with a bakery breakfast/lunch place, plus two dinner houses, the Italian more reasonably priced than the seafood, and more. Nearby are a good number of options, local and chain. The GWU campus offers the requisite coffee house branches and, if your kids want fast food, the GWU Marvin Center, two blocks away, has a food court with a several options, though the hours vary from usual. The GWU website also has a list for visitors of many restaurants close to its campus. I grew fond of the State Plaza while staying there. Many critics point to it as badly in need of an update yet I think it all depends on your viewpoint. I hope much is left as is--charmingly '50s. The kitchen was a great plus. The bellman mentioned that the hotel had once been efficiency apartments and, except for the microwave, the kitchens are much the same, including a cook top and full-size fridge. There are some dishes and cups in the cupboards and the hotel promises pots and pans upon request. This would be especially helpful for a longer stay. There's a chain drug store for groceries right next door as well as a large branch with a larger grocery section at the 2000 Pennsylvania. The bathroom was mostly original vintage, too, smaller than those at most hotels but with a good sized adjacent dressing room with big vintage vanity, great lighting, and a wall size mirror. There's plenty of light and mirrors in the bathroom as well, a big help to those near-sighted like me. In the closet is a special safe for laptops you program electronically with a PIN. I had to tilt my 15" laptop to fit but I was able to lock it away every time I left. Internet access is free and via ethernet cable. There's also a small office for guest use on the first floor. Elsewhere is the café which seems European-like in its scale and intimacy. Good food and a full bar, though the menu and hours are limited. I don't believe there is breakfast room service, which would have been a plus. Had two pleasant dinners there but Sunday brunch was a dud. Built in 18% tip for shabby buffet and lethargic service. The room itself was well equipped and immaculate. It was clear the room was well-cleaned and vacuumed daily, something I'm not sure happens at all hotels with multi-night guests. Good bedding and bed. Good towels and toiletries. Except for the brunch issue, I have no complaints at all about the staff. On the way to my room, the bellman showed me where common services were. And when I checked out, the desk staff helped me deal with a discrepancy in my Super Shuttle reservation. They weren't successful, but not for want of trying. I would be likely to choose the State Plaza for a future DC stay, even if GWU were not a factor. (I would NOT pre-book the Super Shuttle again...Super Dud!)

The trick to finding restaurants nearby is to walk up one of the numbered streets perpendicular to E and F. There's a quite good, reasonably priced Italian restaurant, Bertucci's, about three blocks north at 2000 Pennsylvania Ave.

I spent the weekend there with my mother. This was her first visit to DC, so short distance to attractions was important. The ... hotel is only a few minutes away from the Lincoln Memorial and the White House. The room we had was HUGE. Just for comparison - a room in a much more expensive hotel and much further away from DC downtown, was much smaller. The staff was extremely friendly and attentive. I loved the area, and already recommended the hotel to friends.

You can cook and eat in your room if you want or there is dining in house. There were plates, cups and a really dull knife. Could have used spoons and forks. Had a nice 32 inch tv with lots of stations and HBO. High speed internet via ethernet cable, nice! Well maintained and clean. Breakfast and changing room.Paper in morning. Excellent Value for Money
Hard To Please Experienced Hotel Junkie Nov 5, 2009
From moment we arrived the staff was excellent. I asked the lady at the front desk where we could park and she told me that ... the hotel had parking but I would be better off parking it in the street over the weekend as it was free unlimited parking on Saturdays and Sundays. The rooms were great size, the mini kitchen would have been useful had we been staying longer. The bathroom is excellent, the tiles could have been updated but nether the less it was well lit clean and modern looking. The hotel is located about 4 blocks from the white house and the National Mall... no need to pay for taxi to get there unless its raining and then your cost will be around 8 dollars (4 ppl in the cab) to get to the Washington monument. All of the main sightseeing locations are free to see from the outside and are all walking distance to the hotel. If you wish to get out on the town then a $11 dollar cab ride will take you to nearby Georgetown or Adams Morgan where the nightlife is crazy on a Saturday night( the bus stop out the front of the hotel also goes to these locations for around 2.50 per person) There is no where worth eating at near the hotel however there is a CVS and a liquor store next door to the hotel and the CVS has milk, cereal, pastries and other snacks if you need. The staff was excellent in assisting us with all the questions we asked of them. There is a bus stop outside of the hotel. Arlington National Cemetery is a 5 minute drive from the hotel as is the Pentagon. There is train/bus routes that go there also. I beleive you can see the main attractions from the outside in 2 full days if thats all you want to see like we did. Dupont Circle has nice restaurants and cafes to hang out at. We found all our details of where to go and when from the hotel staff. The hotel was excellent value for money considering it was clean, decent size, modern and the staff were excellent..most importantly the location !!! 4 blocks from the white house!! i would definetly stay here again!

We picked the State Plaza from other reviews. It's a great location for the sites, but a bit of a hike to the nearest Metro. ... After that mile trip twice a day for 4 days we were happy to pay for cabs rather than the hike to the Metro. Hotel is clean and the suit design is a great idea for families. The rooms were clean and modern looking, my son loved the LCD tv in front of his bed Staff are friendly and very professional. We only ate in the restaurant once for breakfast, pretty average and usual hotel price. Worst thing about our stay was the A/C. There was none. The rooms were in the 80's the first night. Windows only open 2'' so not much ventilation. Second day were were given a fan, with this propped into the window area were could get some cooling effect. Downside of this arrangement was the dump trucks reversing under our windows at 2 , 3 , and 4 am so no sleep for the next 3 days. Would we stay there again? Maybe, but would request a room on the 'odd' number side of the hotel to stay away from the dump trucks ect. They would have to do something with the A/C too. It was good value for money but you get what you pay for.

State plaza was a good value for the money. It's an older building which used to be apartments,I believe. That's probably ... why they bill it as "apartment style living"...it is. Our suite had a complete kitchen with a full compliment of accoutrements. The place is clean. It's a pleasant 4 block walk thru George Washington University to the Foggy Bottom Metro Station. From there it was an easy connect to all the sights of the city.

Always sees things half full. Oct 21, 2009
Staff were very, very responsive when problems arose - internet connection, no hot water, no heater, safe malfunction, etc. ... They solved all problems quickly. Having a kitchen and being able to prepare "home-cooked" meals was great. Good location near the White House, and in the George Washington U neighborhood. It was quiet. I slept well. There was always some food odor in the hallways. Perhaps they can improve on the ventilation. The place could use a change in carpets - will do a lot to improve the cleanliness and ambience. Lobby and elevator access not facilitated for the disabled or for just anyone with heavy bags on wheels. Need to control infestation: I got insect bites! So, just like any place, there were plusses and minuses. Just want to give an objective review.
