Leona's Spirit Lives (in Room 1708)
The Out-of-Towners Dec 2, 2009
Starting with the positive - The Park Lane is in a great location, directly across from Central Park South. The doorman & ... concierge were very helpful in arranging transportation for you. The lobby area is well-staffed and has attractive decor. Moving up to Room 1708 ("city" view). Clearly a costly upgrade to a park view would have provided a better view, but this room looked out on the backs of unattractive buildings with no street to be seen below. Imagine our surprise when upon arrival in our room, the following is what we saw and experienced: Trash on the floor (in an unused guest room??) A broken glass in the bathroom and only 1 wine glass in a double room A blown bulb on the main dresser lamp that we requested be fixed but never was Room service order for breakfast placed the night before but not received; a re-order the following morning yielded results, and the room service meal was delicious. Horrible bed - lumpy with bad springs Furniture (French provincial) with bashed in side of dresser and badly scarred legs on everything Our bill had >$80 of minibar charges for items we had not used and posted on a day we had requested no housekeeping services Housekeeping seemed to remove items you might need so you could call for them to be delivered later and thus obligate you to tipping them. We had the opportunity to visit friends on the 22nd floor and found their accommodations to be clean, bright, having an actual city view, etc. We were paying the same rate (double room/city view). As much as we would have like to, we cannot in good conscience recommend this hotel based on our experiences.

It's a medium walk to the Tavern on the Green, which is a spectacular sight at night in the northwest section of Central Park. It will be closing for good on 12/31/09 so be sure and get there if you can.

Awesome first time trip to NYC
steffie Nov 23, 2009
We took a cab to the hotel at 8 am and were hoping to check in early which thankfully we were able to do! That was really ... nice. Great location, friendly staff, but we did have an unfortunate experience with room service. I orderd pancakes for breakfast and when my boyfriend had a bite he bit into glass that was inside our pancakes! It was horrible but thankfully he wasn't hurt. The room service staff was rude to us when we let them know what happened. We didn't let the bad experience bother us and made no fuss but when we checked out I let them know what happened and they apologized and said they were not aware of the incident. There is a subway stop right outside the hotel which was very convenient. All the wonderful high end stores are very close to the hotel. The hotel feels old but it is nice and clean, I wouldn't recommend it for a young couple like us.

We liked the hotel fine. We loved the location right on Central Park. The lobby is nice, but the room we stayed in was very ... old and dingy. The housekeeping staff did a great job, it was just the carpets and the tiles in the bathrooms. Everything just needed remodeling. There was plenty of room and the view of Central Park was great, so no complaints other than the rooms need work.

Unless you have a thing against subways, forget about trying to get a taxi, which can be impossible at times. The subway, to my surprise, was clean, easy to understand, and very reliable. We were able to go from midtown to Chinatown and all places in between with no problem. We felt very safe. The city is much prettier and safe than when I last visited. Mayors Koch and Bloomberg have done a great job of cleaning it up.

- Location is PERFECT - Travel Package was excellent - Clean Rooms - Very Friendly staff - To charge for the Internet $15 ... sounds "cheap" in an hotel of this name and quality - Business Centre has terrible software. I couldn´t print my document - No photo copy machine I would definitively come back to this hotel. It would be nicer once the renovation takes place, but still great value for money

Hotel was not anywhere near what we expected. Older hotel, outdated bathrooms, internet and TV never worked properly despite ... complaining several times. The most amazing thing was having to order ice from room service whenever we needed it $$$!! We were charged for snacks that we never took. It all made for a very unhappy week-end. We had a King Bed with the Park (Central) view. Very Very nice. Refrigerator in the room was great for leftovers. The decor ... was dated, but everything worked fine. The staff was prompt and we didn't wait for any service. The location is convenient to subway stops. The only thing I would caution a traveler on is "Harry's" the hotel bar. It has the great look of a classic hotel bar and we enjoyed it; however, the drink prices, even by New York standards, were too high (i.e. $22 martini), unless you were at a super swanky trendy place, which Harry's was not. One other note: a few doors down is Mickey Mantel's restaurant. Great memorabilia, but just stop in for a drink. its over priced bar food. ($19 bowl of chili). We walked around the corner to Angelo's. A great sit down Italian pizzeria. Got a large pizza for about the cost of a bowl of chili (pasta was superb too). Overall, a great trip and a great deal!
