Not so special
M + J Enterprises LLC Aug 14, 2009
Unfortunately the staff at this hotel is not trained on how to take care of guests. First, the described scenic mountain view ... was a noisy parking lot, and our balcony was located directly above the valet drop off. The King bed we had requested was also not available, which was disappointing, but not guaranteed so we were fine with that. However, our room was also located next to the check in station and between that and the valet drop off, the noise level was unbearable. We called the front desk and their solution was that we pay for an upgrade since no other rooms were available. When the noise level did not subside after 10PM we asked again to please be moved and this time a manager called us back. He argued with us about the noise level, and said the only room available for us to get moved into was a suite that was pricier that our room and again said we had to pay an upgrade to sleep there. It was after 10PM, I doubt anyone would have checked in for that room, and all we wanted was a quite place to sleep as we had a day of driving ahead of us. After some more back and forth, he found us another room to move into. We moved that night into the same type of room we had, but on the other side of the hotel. It was quite and we slept great! Why could this not have happened earlier in the evening when we asked for a different room and why was the only solution offered by two different employees the upgrade, when there was obviously a room identical to ours available after all. The staff was a group of young kids with zero problem solving skills and no knowledge of customer service. The first room was a joke for the price we paid. The place was also outdated and lacked your basic hotel comforts like a mini bar and an up-to-date bathroom. Between that and the staff it was the worst hotel experience we ever had.

Pleasantly surprised
Hard to Please Donna Jul 18, 2009
Was surprised. Partial ocean view was better than we expected.Lookedto left from patio to see ocean. To right and straight ... ahead to see mountains. Staff was always helpful and responsive. Had shuttle available for Thur evening San Luis Obispo street fair/farmers market. Shuttle to airport. Forget the restaurant-overpriced and not that good. Eat elsewhere. Forget McLintocks. Way overrated. Room was clean. Had turndown service if you want it. We would definitely stay there again. Water and fruit available no charge and newspaper in lobby. Seaside cafe has the best pancakes ever. A little pricey but worth it!Refrigerator in room. The pillows and mattress the most comfortable we've found in a hotel.

We stayed over the 4th of July weekend and it was 100% booked. The pool area was too packed to sit down and it was very ... noisy. That said we would go back at another time when it was not such a party weekend. A great place if you have a pet.

Great dog-friendly resort
hi Jun 5, 2009
This resort/hotel is great if you want quiet stay compared to staying in downtown Pismo Beach. We also wanted a nice hotel ... that allowed dogs. Dogs are allowed on the patio of the restaurant and bar and in common areas. There's a nice path along the top of the bluff with poop bag stations.

disappointing stay
beach lover May 11, 2009
The hotel is in a great location! Beautiful views and right next to beach access. However, the benefits stop there. Although ... the front desk staff were very friendly, they were unable to solve the issues we had with our room. The room...fist, it was much smaller than expected. The bathroom was tiny and outdated. The chair in the room worn and faded. There was an unidentifiable splatter on one wall and even a shoeprint on the ceiling. Not what we expected when planning a romantic weekend. On top of that, the AC wasn't working, the vent fan in the bathroom was broken, and the toilet was running. Upon mentioning to the front desk, the maitenance crew fixed the AC and fiddled with the toilet (which worked for a short time, then kept running). The restaurant staff was consistently rude. Happy hour was lovely and we enjoyed some tasty treats while sitting on the patio. However, dining in the restaurant was only fair and the most friendly person we encountered was the bus boy. By far, the most disappointing thing was the reaction of the hotel managaer. When bringing our concerns to his attention, he merely asked what room we were in and said "thanks". Not what I would call good customer service. At the prices, I expect service with at least a smile. Not recommended. We won't be back...

Tucked away from the downtown area, so a few restaurants close by, but probably need a car to enjoy all the area has to offer. That's what we like about it!
--Larry, Simi Valley, CA Aug 1, 2008
The food at the Cliffs was excellent. We also drove to a town called Avila, a few miles north. You can drive to the end of the pier in your car - park and look at the water, have dinner and/or a drink. Very nice.

Del's Pizzaria & Italian restaurant is about a mile down the street from The Cliffs, and was a great place for dinner. It's been there for 25+ years, and after eating there, it was obvious why. Great food, great service, highly recommended.
