Great location, top of Nob Hill, at the crossing of 2 cable cars lines. Very comfortable hotel. One downside : fire alarm at ... 1 pm , hotel evacuated completely in the middle of the night, and no "compensation" or at least a little note in the morning to apologize for the inconvenience...A free drink at the bar would have been nice!!

Well Appointed Home Away-From Home
Cybermom1944 Oct 20, 2009
Our experience was outstanding over all. The hotel was located just 4 blocks from Union Square where all the "action" ... happened for us since we were there supporting a run/walker in the Nike, LLC Women's Marathon. Those 4 blocks were all downhill, thankfully, since the hills are at about an 85 degree slope. The room was comfy, cozy, quiet, clean and well appointed. The beds were quite comfy...leaving no morning aches and pains. All our needs were cheerfully met. In the quiet, subtly elegant restaurant, we enjoyed coctails, a dinner, a breakfast and ambiance. We never felt rushed and were graciously attended. Getting a beverage "to go" was never a problem. Only one problem existed: The evening of our arrival, the check-in clerk gave us some hassle. We were mother and daughter together and when we specified the room type my husband had reserved through [...], the clerk said it wasn't available and they had the right to give us any of the types listed on the confirmation sheet since it had been booked through a third party. She acted like it was my fault for specifying a certain room type at reservation time. I was tired and hot and I stood my ground and expressed just what was reserved and was countered with the fact that that particular type of room was not available unless there had been a cancellation. I countered saying the specific alternate type of room we would accept and then the clerk "found" the kind of room we had reserved. She was not friendly, was brusk and curt, so I answered her with an "in kind voice tone"--not angry, just curt. I then felt badly, and graciously thanked her for her time and attempts to solve our problem...even though I feel it was really the hotel's problem. After that night, she was pleasant to me and remembered my name...imagine! All the other hotel employees were most helpful and friendly. As I said, the overall experience was wonderful...just be mentally prepared, that's all. I would definitely return there with my husband...it's close to downtown...8 blocks downhill. Cab it back.

If you decided to use public transportation for your sight-seeing, be prepared to see less as transportation takes a long time of waiting. You get to see a good cross-section of the people who live in SF and that is good, but the places you want to visit may not all fit into your time schedule.

GREAT except for sleeping snafu
Mom Aug 31, 2009
The hotel couldn't have been nicer and the staff was most polite. The problem was that our reservation/confirmation clearly ... stated it was for 4 people and we only had sleeping accomodations for 3 (one queen bed plus the single air mattress added when we pointed out the problem). Our 4th person had to sleep on the floor. I know about booking thru Orbitz and not having a specific TYPE of bed guaranteed. But we've never had to sleep WITHOUT a bed of some sort. The staff said they were all out of inventory, both of bigger rooms and of air mattresses. Our ratings assume what the hotel experience WOULD HAVE BEEN without this BIG sleeping SNAFU - something totally new to us in the world of Orbitz.

We found the ambience and food in the hotel dining area EXCELLENT! They've set up the coziest tables, booths and eating bars and were MOST accommodating when a large number of people needed/wanted to grab a late bite (after the Giants' game).

Fantastic value & location
Jana Clark Jul 26, 2009
We enjoyed our stay at the Stanford. We asked for a room facing the courtyard so we were not bothered by the noise of the ... trolleys. This was a great hotel in a fabulous location. The concierge service was helpful. The only that would have made our stay any better is if there had been a swimming pool.
Traveler type: Family
We bought the three day trolley passport. We got our money's worth by the end of the first day. It was a huge benefit since we did not rent a car. It would have been a huge inconvenience to rent a car and the price of parking is very expensive. DON'T rent a car until you are leaving the city. The transportation system is easy to use.

thankful to not be sleepless in SF Jul 5, 2009
When we first arrived, the hotel staff didn't have our room reserved correctly. They blamed the internet reservation sites. ... we were put in a small room with one bed (there were 4 of us) with no view, nor, as we found out later, coffee mugs, a workable TV or enough towels or blankets. No rollaways were available either. We were not the only ones this had happened to that day. My daughter ended up spending the night on the floor. Thankfully, the next day, we were able to move to another, larger room with a view which was very pleasant. This was due to the hard work and diligence of one hotel staff person, who made sure that we were able to move to a much better room. Overall, the location and restaurant were excellent and our 2nd night was spent very comfortably. However, there are a lot of kinks that this hotel needs to work out if it wants to remain competitive with its high-tone neighbors.

Great hotel at a great price
Anniversary Couple May 28, 2009
The hotel is on top of Nob Hill, close to Union Square. Therefore, the rooms with views do not disappoint. Because the ... hotel is on a hill, to get to a lot of shops or restaurants, you will have to walk up and down steep San Franscisco hills. However, there are always cabs parked outside and the hotel is at the intersection of two San Fran Trolley lines. Overall, this was a great hotel for the price and we would definately stay here again.

Stayed 7 days to celebrate my sister's birthday. Hotel staff are professional and helpful, in particular the Concierge, who ... suggested very good places to eat. The location is terrific. The hotel is on the corner of 2 cable car lines (one going to Union Square and the other one to the Fisherman's Warf). The beds are comfortable and plush with feather duvets and feather mattress covers. The best beds of any hotel I've ever been in! The room and bathroom were spotless.

Breakfast at the Cento Coffee Shop across the street from the hotel is great. Coffee is delicious and pastries very good. For dinner, try the Nob Hill Cafe on Taylor Street, a short walk from the hotel. They serve excellent Italian food. Try to get there early for dinner--the place is packed and they don't take reservations. Hunan's Home in Chinatown is also very good.
