Check out the beach at the end of Nautilaus St. It's a local hangout. But, arrive early in the day for parking.

Great hospitality, great location
Happy traveler May 26, 2009
The hotel provided great service in a beautiful location. Close to shopping, the beach and easy access to near by ... locations. The only bad spot was the rooms location which was above the kitchen and was somtimes noisy with the sounds of glass being thrown out. Otherwise I have no complaints.

Too pricey for what they offer
Kate Aug 7, 2008
The only elevator is ancient and very slow so we always took the stairs. The pool is 3-4 feet deep and there was no fitness ... center or business center. The staff at the front desk were very young and literally did not know their left from right - they repeatedly gave bad directions. There is no public parking in the area, and they hit you with $18 per day parking. On the plus, its a pretty old art deco building, very clean and well kept (but they need a new elevator) and the location is prime. Room decor is tasteful and the bathroom is big and nice.

Great place to stay
Bradley Jul 27, 2008
The Grande Colonial was a great place to stay in La Jolla. The staff were friendly and parking was a pretty easy. We valet ... (which we normally do not like to do) but for $18 a day we were able to get the car whenever we wanted and fast. Our room was huge with a great view of the ocean. A family could have easily stayed in that room with room to spare! Air conditioner was not as efficient as we would have liked but the windows all opened and there was a great breeze. Bathroom was tiny but that was to be expected in such an older building. Great place to stay!

Not a Grand Colonial
Timothy Aug 21, 2007
This was our first visit to the Grand Colonial. Based on recommendations and reviews, we were expecting a Four STAR ... experience for Four Star price we paid. It fell far short of expectations. The good: a beautiful large 2 room suite, looking out to the Pacific Ocean ~ 2 long blocks from the main La Jolla beach - though it was not as completely unobstructed view. The room was very clean and the bed/furniture were very comfortable. Linens, towels and robes were all first class. The staff was very friendly. The bad: The room was not ready for us at check in time. After an hour walk around the neighborhood, it was still not available. Final, a manager got the staff to clean the room. There was a window in the tub/shower area that refused to close! It stayed 4 open at all times. A little disturbing to say the least. The air condition in the room was very tempermental. It took 3-4 minutes of button pushing to get it to turn on - though it maintained temperature fine once it did finally turn on. While there was wireless internet, there were no other business services available - we walked down the block to use a FedEx Kinkos store to print our return boarding passes. The Concierge service was below average. We were able to get some maps but most directions were not very good. Young ladies staffing it seemed to be very new to this type of work. Finally, I was presented a charge of $18 per day for valet parking services - something that we were not told about at all. A little miffed - especially since I tipped liberally each day the valet retrieved/parked our car. Would we go back? Maybe. My wife did love the old world charm and it is in a great location. But honestly, I thought it was a very poor value and would investigate other options along Prospect Blvd before committing to another state at the Grand Colonial.
