At first, they give me a cave room with not outside light just a window, but not sunlight was coming in at any time of the ... day, so i requested a nother room. I was given another room, not much better, but did have some sunlight, not much but ok,the rooms are very plain, with no decoration, very plain and ugly rooms, the only thing good about this Hotel was the Pool, and free Internet.

great location, old facilities

This hotel is walking distance to the main street in Del Mar and and minutes in the car to the beach area. Because it is set ... back from the street there is very little traffic noise which was great. The staff was very helpful and the wireless internet very handy. There are two parts of the hotel, one is much older and that is where we stayed. This was the biggest problem with our stay. The carpet was horribly dirty, I did not want to walk on it with bare feet, and I am not usually very particular about this type of thing. The mattresses were old and not very comfortable and the linens were flimsy. The room also had a musty odor. We did not go into any of the rooms in the other portion of the hotel so I can not comment on them. The room was good size with room for the kids to play. The bathroom had shower only, no tub. Continental breakfast was convenient and sufficient for us, but minimal - breads, cereal, hard boiled eggs, juice and coffee. This hotel worked out for us since we were looking for something affordable and close to the beach, but if I stayed again, I would ask for an updated or newer room.

Nice hotel once problems were resolved
Fred & Ginger Sep 27, 2009
Upon arrival, the clerk on duty tried to give us a standard room rather than what we'd paid for. Although she relented on ... that point, she put us in a room where nothing seemed to work. When we went for a swim in the evening, problems with the door lock kept us from getting back into the room, even when we were given replacement cards. The gentleman on duty that evening was SO much more professional. When he heard about all the difficulties with the room we'd been given, he immediately assigned us to a lovely room and the rest of our stay was quite pleasant. In fact, except for the clerk we encountered on arrival, all of the staff members were most courteous and professional.

Comfortable and in excellent location
former Del Mar resident Sep 23, 2009
This was our first time staying at the Stratford Inn and we will definitely return. In fact, we have already made a ... reservation for our next trip. The location is excellent and the staff friendly and helpful. The rooms are spacious and while not luxurious are certainly comfortable and clean. Free wireless internet and the complimentary breakfast plus easy access to the beach and downtown Del Mar make this hotel a perfect choice. In the past, we have stayed in much more expensive options in Del Mar, but found the Stratford a more than satisfactory alternative.

Look before you Leap...
Wife & Mom Sep 14, 2009
My husband and I went to San Diego for our Anniversay. I looked at many hotels online, but needed to find a reasonable price. ... Stratford in Del Mar seemed like a good fit. The location was great and easy to find. When we walked into our room, I was very disappointed. Apparently there two buildings...one remodeled and one not remodeled. We were put into the not remodeled one. The room was SMALL. The lighting was poor. There was a ramp outside our room so we heard rolling luggage at all hours. The room had a musty smell, maybe due to the large(about 3 ft)stain on carpet in the corner. The bedding was old...stitching coming undone and pillows that were way too small for the case. Bathroom was so small, no room for a tub...shower only. We had asked for a bigger or just nicer room and they were going to charge us $30 more per night. We decided to deal with it. We asked for 2 more pillows so we could prop up and watch TV...this took 2 requests and 24 hrs to get. I had to think twice before getting into hot tub which was 1/3 covered black. Makes you think you are going to sit in some nice warm mold! Needs paint! The continental breakfast was okay...cereal, bagels, pastry, coffee, juices...just what you would expect. So, With my experience, I will not stay there, nor will I recommend it. It would have been nice had Orbit told about the remodel at the time of booking! The best thing about this hotel was the cookies in the lobby!

Stratford In @ Del Mar
WhoMe? Aug 22, 2009
The Stratford Inn at Del Mar was good experience. Its rooms were good as would be expected of a Best Western, understanding ... that this is not the Marriott 4Star hotel. The room initially had a odor which was dispelled when we turned on the air conditioner. The Inn is about 1/2 mile walk from the Del Mar main tourista area. Its a easy drive south to La Jolla from the inn.

Poseidon Restaurant in Del Mar was a treat. It is located right on the beach. We had lunch there. The food was excellent. Surprisingly, the Poseidon is not exclusively a seafood market. It is actually more continental. Prices for breakfast and lunch plates are in the 12-20 range and dinner in the 30-60 range. You can eat out on the veranda (outside) or inside. There really is only token parking in the area and you should expect to pay the valet parking which is a nominal $3.

Very Dirty & Very Misleading Pictures!
Mike F. Aug 7, 2009
The website pictures are very misleading, only showing the new condo type places & rooms. We got put in the old apartment ... type section & room which we didn't see any pictures on their website. Plus we had three people with one bed! We needed 2 beds as requested. So, we all had to sleep in one bed... very cramped! They offered us a rollaway bed for $10.00 per day though. Why should we pay for a rollaway bed when it was their mistake? Watch out for the maids cleaning the rooms, it's not just that, they don't clean the rooms. They just tidy up and put your old used towels that were thrown onto the floors, fluffed and fold them back onto the towel racks. We had stains and other gross things that were dried on the towels; and they expect us to use those towels again? They didn't even vacuum the floors either. And finally, the bed spread & mattress had stains on it, and that wasn't from us. Very, very dirty hotel! They had lots of problems with their Wi-Fi internet too. Did not get my money's worth. We've got ripped off!

We stayed in the older part of the hotel. It was a little noisy because the walkway on 2nd floor was wood. Overall, the ... location was great, the room was spacious and clean. The shower stall needs something to hang wash rags on to dry, and a towel rack is needed by the sink. Breakfast area and 2 pools were very nice.

Disappointing Place To Stay
kewlbreezes Jul 30, 2009
The room was satisfactory in size but the decor looked like it hadn't been changed since the 1940's. It didn't look retro; ... just "yard sale" furnished. The plumbing in the next room made so much noise when anyone used it that it sounded like a major waterfall. The bedding was yellow and looked unclean. I left the room for six hours and came back and still no housekeeping service. I called the front desk and they were indifferent about it. I paid about $117 a night and this place was highly overpriced. The pools were okay, as was the breakfast, but that's about the only positives.

the hotel was very nice, very reasonable, and the staff was nice enough. The oceanview was a bit distracted with ... construction that is taking place right behind the hotel and our room. Friday morning was a bit loud waking up to the sounds of construction equipment, not to mention that they were so close that if the curtains were open the crews would have had a full view of our sleeping attire! I hope that whatever they are building does not obstruct the view. Besides the construction, the hotel was fine.

not a bad place to stay
Homer Jun 21, 2009
I arrived late in the evening from a long flight (and a journey from the airport to the hotel that seemed nearly as long), ... but the clerk at the front desk was very efficient and I was in my room within a matter of minutes. The staff was also extremely helpful when I needed access to a printer...and when I misplaced my room key. The complimentary breakfast wasn't extravagant, but was more than I needed (bagels, muffins, danish, milk, juice, coffee, cereal...the basics). My only complaint would be that the hotel is located right on Camino del Mar, and the traffic noise was quite noticeable...I had to keep the window closed (and the A/C on) during the nights. For anyone who's sensitive to noise when sleeping, this could be a problem, and you might want to request a room further away from the street. Also, the hotel is located conveniently for my purposes (house-hunting in the La Jolla-to-Carlsbad area), but there didn't appear to be much in the immediate vicinity (i.e., dining within walking distance), so prospective guests should be prepared to walk about a mile or more (or drive) to find restaurants for lunch/dinner. I had a rental car, so this wasn't a big issue. Overall, though, I was quite satisfied with my four-day stay at the Stratford Inn.

We stayed there recently while visiting family in the Del Mar area. The location of the hotel was great as it was an easy ... walk to the shops and restaurants of "downtown" Del Mar. The hotel is what you would expect at this price point; nothing fancy, but nothing bad about it either. My biggest issue was the fluctuating hot/cold water in the shower. Would stay there again.
