Very unique with a fantastic view

My coworkers and I stayed while attending an event at the Convention Center. I arrived around 9am and I was welcomed but two ... very friendly staff members and I was able to check in to my room straight away. Very hip and trendy indeed and almost retro. After the event and long day we spent the evening at one of the coolest spots in Downtown, on the ROOF! The lounge was amazing with the mixed atomosphere, fireplace and water beds next to the pool! We had an amazing time and for a reasonable price. I will recommend the Standard Downtown LA to all of my friends. Rooms were great, beds were incredibly comfortable and the bubble bath in the oversized tub similar to the size of a single bed, next to the window was quite memorable. The Mini Bar and supplies were fun to check out too! Thank you for a fabulous weekend.

Awake and Asleep Standard
Downtown Native Sep 28, 2009
I have known of The Standard for quite some time having lived across the street from it for 5 years. The hotel's attraction ... is its edge, atmosphere, unusual rooms and rooftop pool/bar which is used for filming in many TV commercials these days. One of these attractions is usually enough to make the experience worthwhile and it was this time. The hotel's negatives are lackadaisical and sometimes aloof staff (front desk these time), the slow bell/valet service/front desk at peak times, and noise in the hallways as post-bar disrespectful people go to their rooms and sometimes decide to hang out in the hall and post-party as they did during this stay. At checkout time the bell person never appeared to my room after 40 minutes (and 1 reminder call) so I carted my stuff downstairs to the check out desk. The line was prohibitively long with only two desk staff working at a peak time, so I had to bypass check out and call their accounting office two days later in order to get my bill faxed to me. (The first time I called, the person in accounting never called back so I called a second time the next day and got someone live). Valet car retrieval was slow. It took about 20 minutes with only 3 other people in line in front of me. This is the good and the bad with The Standard that I've known for quite a while. Perhaps some things just won't change there.

Fantastic Club Atmosphere
Dodger Fan Sep 19, 2009
I came to LA,California to treat my father to four baseball games to see the LA Dodgers play at Dodger Stadium. As soon as I ... walked in the Standard Hotel Room, I immediately felt uncomfortable because the shower, (which seemed to be the focal point of the room) was surrounded by glass and it had no curtain for privacy. One of us had to leave the room when the other one had to shower, which was ridiculous. The Hotel was gloomy and dark. This atmosphere is perfect for the younger crowd (college bound or young newlyweds). A plus was that the rooms were clean and the employees were friendly.

The Pantry, at 9th and something, an LA institution has very cheap, filling, great tasting breakfasts. Probably great for other meals too. $4.85 for pancakes and coffee w/refills. Breakfast for 4 at the Pantry = $32, Breakfast for 6 at the hotel = $120.

Very modern and great location!
Ms.Frequent Traveler Sep 14, 2009
Overall, it was a pretty good hotel, great location and friendly staff. The only thing I feel unsatisfied is that the person ... who clean our rooms did not give us brand new lotion, conditioner, soap etc. every night. I don't know if it is an individual problem or the hotel's policy. Personally, I prefer more than less, or just enough.

Fantastic service and great staff
Mom with 6 and 8 year old Sep 8, 2009
Even though it's a hip hotel, the staff are not full of themselves. Stayed four nights, in town for a wedding. We had five ... rooms and lots of service requests - concierge, housekeeping, pool bar, etc. Everyone was just fantastic - [...] the rooftop bar/pool manager, [...] at the front desk, the long-haired surfer dude at the valet station.

Had guest only access to the pool, a cool atmosphere, awesome valet service. Called for a towel late at night (noticed the ... cleaning staff didn't put out two) and it was brought up with no problem or delay! Would recommend strongly. I did not dine here and so rated it neutral.

Fancy and Fun
Mimi Aug 18, 2009
Not for children but great location, close to everything. The lobby is beautiful and they have live bands. The staff was very ... accommodating. The roof top is a wonderful idea. You can swim, chill, or party all on the roof. The bathroom is HUGE which is great for sharing a space. You can party in the hotel either on the roof of lobby and safely walk back to your room. Drinking and driving is a nonissue. One night we had a noise problem, however the hotel took care of it immediately with no questions asked. I would most certainly stay there again. I also would like to check out this hotel in other cities.

Snotty Staff
Disappointed Aug 1, 2009
I've stayed here many times. All too often, there are a number of people on the staff that are too snotty and elitist. And ... they have a bunch of rules, like you can't take your backpack to the pool. The location and the patrons are cool. The staff is composed of jerks. Stay at your own risk.

Great stay at the Standard
LA Traveler Jun 8, 2009
A friend and I were there to meet up with some friends who were staying at the Sheraton downtown. The Standard was a great ... surprise! The rooms were clean and nice. Our stay was very peaceful and quiet. It was in a good location making it fairly easy to get around to the places we needed.

Not so Standard
Eck Jun 2, 2009
While they didn't have the correct information about my stay (they thought it was for 5 nights, instead of the 6 I had ... booked), I was quickly upgraded to another room and booked for my entire stay. I was there for conference at Convention Center - the hotel is 2 minute walk to Metro station and about a 20 minute walk to Convention/Staples Center. Not a ton of dining/nightlife options in this part of town, though (although there is some very good sushi nearby). It has a small, but clean and functional gym (interesting photos, ahem), a restaurant and bars on site. There was an odor of cigarette smoke over the weekend (from the Friday/Saturday night crowd, I think), but there were no traces of it a couple of days later.

The vibe was cool at the Standard and the hosts were extremely friendly. The rooftop bar/pool is a hot scene and as a guest ... you get automatic entrance. I went for dinner and arrived at the hotel around 11:30 on a Thursday. There was a line to get in and they were not letting people into the bar to control the crowd. I showed my key and got myself and a couple friends in with no questions asked. They definitely take care of thier guests.

If you plan to see LA, rent a car. Downtown LA is a work in progress, but there is not too much to do unless you're going to an event at the Staples Center or visiting the rooftop bar of the Standard (or work related.) It is easy to get cabs downtown, but because of distances, a trip to the Hollywood area for exampe can cost $40 one way.

Excellent location, excellent service

We had business meetings in down town L.A. and went to a Lakers game in the evening. - The location of the hotel is ... excellent. We never used our car or a taxi. Everything is in walking distance. We liked their roof-top bar for afternoon drinks and enjoyed a late night dinner at the hotel's 24 hr restaurant.
