First, the good the facilities are beautiful, the room terrific and the staff could not have been more cheerful, although ... it turned out entirely helpless. Everything else was a stunning disaster. The first problem I discovered is that the buttons on the phone did not match the destination of the call. So to reach Room Service you had to hit the "Front Desk" button. It was impossible to reach the Front Desk, so I started dialing zero instead. When I informed the staff about this problem, they said "I'm sorry." They shrugged and didn't indicate that they intended to fix it or even if it was being fixed. "We are having problems with the phones," they said. As you can imagine, this would result in what I would normally consider a comedy of errors, but when you are on business and have a lot to complete every day, it's anything but amusing. Typical call: I call the front desk by dialing 0, since the Front Desk button takes me to Room Service. A cheery front-desk attendant answers. I request that she connect me to the Concierge because the Concierge button on my phone does not work at all. She says yes, puts me on hold. For a long time. After about 10 minutes, I take the elevator down to talk to the Concierge and she was "out." I needed help finding a store to purchase wine, but she was nowhere to be found. For my entire three-day stay, the concierge desk was either empty, or she was buried in a phone call. A long phone call. I actually stood at the desk waiting until she completed the phone call, but it just went on and on and I felt foolish just standing there. That night, the Internet connection went dead. To a businessman, this is pretty much worse than the toilet exploding. I called the front desk (by dialing zero) and they told me they had a technician looking into it and would call me back with an update. At the time I was working on a critical on-line RFP response that was on deadline and I was absolutely shut out from participating I could not just use a different computer because my computer contains special software to enable participation. The front desk calls me an hour later to tell me that the Internet would be out UNTIL TOMORROW MORNING. Apparently a part was broken and there was nothing they could do about it. Thankfully, the engineer was able to restore the connection after about two hours, but those were two critical hours I had lost. Oh, and my room key would lose magnetization once a day. Yes, I know it was "sensitive," and I kept it away from my wallet and credit cards. Didn't matter. I had to remember to get a new key each day or I would be stranded on the elevator because my key was dead and I couldn't get to my floor. Wouldn't you expect them to fix the systems so the keys weren't so sensitive? Honestly, this was one of the most frustrating and difficult stays I've ever had at ANY hotel, including 1-star hotels in the middle of nowhere. It was so frustrating and difficult and maddening for the staff to just keep apologizing for the most basic things the phone buttons are wrong, you never know where the call goes if you push a button, front desk leaves you on hold forever, the key fails daily, the Internet is unreliable, the concierge was never there, and when there, ignored you.

Great Anniversary Getaway
Jeff Aug 10, 2009
Great location for a fun weekend trip. No need to rent a car, since it is in the middle of the mass transit (MAX) "free ... zone" and everything is within walking distance. We were able to see the Saturday Market, eat Dim Sum in Chinatown, go to Powell's Bookstore, and see the Portland Art Museum. A friendly, helpful staff for folks who aren't familiar with Portland. I would recommend staying at Clubhouse level for the lounge privledges (snacks, cocktails, and a decent breakfast). I would happily stay at the Nines again!

Went shopping at Pioneer Place Went sight seeing My only complaint is that we had a room on the 14th floor & the restaurant ... was above us. The noise from above was a little disturbing. Other than that we had a very good experience. I would recommend the hotel to others.

Great service in the heart of Portland
Adriane Jul 20, 2009
We visit Portland every year for the Waterfront Blues Festival. With this year's soaring temps, it was imperative to stay at ... a nearby hotel we could get back to in between performances. At first we were a bit skeptical of the location--only a 10 minute walk from the Waterfront, but in a very busy area. However, after telling the management about my husband's insomnia, we were put in a very quiet room facing the river. The hotel itself was beautiful, and we found the fitness room to be quite efficient (never had to wait to get on a treadmill). The room was large and lovely (it was not a suite, but still a great size). My only complaint was that there wasn't very much storage space (I like to unpack my suitcases). Really, that's a very small complaint. I did get a great price on a Club Floor Room ($158 for 2 queen bed room), but I would probably stay even at the hotel's regular prices. If you are on the club floor, you have access to their club room, which provided very good snacks throughout the day and desserts in the evening. The rooms don't have coffeemakers, but there is always someone in the club room to get you coffee if it isn't out on the counter. The club room also provides complimentary spirits...mimosas in the morning, martinis in the evening, coffee nudge at night?--we didn't go that crazy, but it was nice to stop in from the heat for a beverage whether with or without alcohol. Other reviewers found the club room very busy. We were there on 4th of July weekend and never had to wait for a seat. The service wasn't super fast, but it is meant to be a place to relax, and the staff does a lovely job taking care of you. My husband notified the front desk that it was our anniversary. He ordered roses, which were in the room when we arrived (and were gorgeous!). They also added chocolate covered cherries for the occasion. I found the front desk to be very helpful both when I called before we arrived and with any questions we had during our stay. I did think the valet parking was expensive ($32/night)--this is really a complaint for all downtown hotels--I would like the option of valet parking w/o in and out privileges at a lower cost because once we arrive in Portland we use their fantastic public transit system. Waterfront Blues Festival is always a great weekend, but it was made into an incredible vacation because we stayed at the Nines!

Awesome hotel

I had stayed at the Nines a few months back and had a great experience. I had a reservation at another hotel and changed it ... to the Nines. I was VERY UNHAPPY to learn that you do not get hotel points toward a rewards night if you book on Orbitz.... don't pre-pay if you want to collect points for your stay. I didn't see any sort of warning on Orbitz and wasn't told this when I called the hotel. Also, I couldn't get a late checkout (even an hour would've helped!) so my last day was a bit rushed.

THIS WAS OUR FIRST STAY AT "THE NINES" IN PORTLAND. WE LOVED EVERYTHING ABOUT IT! OUR ROOM WAS FANTASTIC AND SUPER QUIET. ... HOWEVER, WE DID HEAR FROM OTHER GUESTS THAT WERE UNLUCKY ENOUGH TO BE BOOKED INTO ROOMS NEAR THE VERY POPULAR NIGHT CLUB ON THE 15th FLOOR. SO IF YOU'RE BOOKING HERE REMEMBER TO REQUEST A ROOM FAR AWAY FROM THE NIGHT CLUB. YOU WON'T BE DISAPPOINTED.

Nice, but sacrifice function for flair
Family Man traveling with the fam May 5, 2009
The hotel is very nice, very modern and a nice getaway for adults. Not really very kid friendly, generally more for business ... or adult travelers trying to get away. The amenities are pretty good. Very nice bathrooms made in marble tile, but a very narrow shower in a huge bathroom makes no sense. Also there is no bathroom fan. One of the lights in the room is burned out. The prices are also very very high for food in room and the restaurant, which if you stay at hotels like this all the time is no surprise. I have been at much less expensive hotels that are the same size and relative quality but food and amenities are much less expensive. Although I do think it is a bit pricey for what you get, it is a fun experience and the hotel is laid out quite nicely.

The Nines was beautiful and the service was terrific. We were missing hand soap, but it was brought right up. Nice restaurant ... on the premises. The menu doesn't cater to vegetarians, but we found plenty of really tasty side dishes to fill us up. I was particularly fond of the lobby (expansive, elegant and restful). The spa needs a pool or soaking tub otherwise even the fitness center was well appointed.

This hotel was very nice and spacious. During my stay, however, there were two nights that our room was not cleaned in spite ... of hanging a yes please notice on our door to have it cleaned. Otherwise, the service was nice and curteous, though almost to the point of being overbearing. Great location, and would recommend this hotel to a friend.
