Great Trip
AKMS Jan 4, 2010
My sister and I stayed at this hotel over New Year's. We were very pleased with the room, it was comfortable and clean and we ... got it at a great price. We stayed on the 15th floor and had a great view of the Museum Campus (Field Museum, Shedd Aquarium, Adler Planeterium) and Lake Michigan. The location was great. It was a little far from North Michigan Ave, but we were able to walk (despite the extreme cold!) almost anywhere we wanted to go and in the spring or summer that walk to the shops along Magnificent Mall would be very pleasant! They were also close to an "el" train stop and so that was very convenient. The front desk staff were extremely helpful and were willing to answer any and all of our questions ranging from how to get somewhere to recommendations for a great restaurant. I definitely recommend this hotel for anyone looking for a nice place to stay at a very reasonable price.

Great Place to Stay on a Budget
Tee~Ecstatic Mom Dec 22, 2009
When I arrived I asked if my room had 2 beds. I was advised 1 king bed. I told desk manager that my daughter may come and ... stay and I prefer 2 beds. I told him that this is a mini vacation for me and if the room with 2 beds is not as nice as the room I have, don't change it. Well he did one better. He provided me with a king suite with a queen pull out. My daughter did stay and used the pull out and I stretched out in the king bed. The furnishings were beautiful and the view of Lake Michigan from my room was fabulous. I would definitely stay again. I found the accomodations to be more than worth the price I paid.

Decent Location Horrible Service
Chicagokate Dec 16, 2009
The website and reviews made this sound like a four star hotel- it wasn't. The lobby and check-in area was dingy and the ... staff was unhelpful and unfriendly. Parking cost almost as much as the hotel and it didn't mention it on their website. Wireless internet was expensive and there was no hub to plug in my internet cable. Our shower was broken and only would spray halfway and the rest of the water ran out of the bottom faucet and the temp control was broken as well- it was either scalding or cold. When we asked the desk for directions to the nearest train or bus they had no clue and weren't helpful. Upon checkout it was packed and they only had 2 luggage carts for the whole hotel so we had to wait a long time and the man was rude to us and also unhelpful and disappeared with our stuff. When we went to get our car they mixed up our tags so our car was sitting parked in the garage exit for twenty minutes. Their ATM was broken as well. I hope to never stay there again.

The Essex was a great value. The price was so good that I was a little worried that the place might be run-down or ... something, but it was very nice. The room was a tad small, but it was very clean and had everything necessary including a small refrigerator that we filled with our own drinks. There was a perfect little coffee maker in the room too. It was walking distance to the museums, parks and shopping too. There are several nearby casual eateries including Panera Bread, Corner Market, etc. within walking distance as well. I will definitely stay at the Essex again!

THE LOCATION IS FANTASTIC FOR FAMILY BASED ACTIVITY...BUT THERE WERE SOME ISSUES AS TO THE AIR QUALITY OF THE ROOMS ..WAS ... RATHER DUSTY...AND HAD A STALE SMELL...NOT OVER-POWERING..BUT PRESENT TO THE POINT OF TASTING IT. ONE POINT I FIND FRUSTRATING..IS THE COST FOR PARKING YOUR VEHICLE AT THE HOTEL...I UNDERSTAND THAT IS SOMEWHAT A NORM CONSIDERING INNER CITY LOCATION...NONE THE LESS..I THINK THE $37.00 A NIGHT IS EXCESSIVE.

Very nice. The staff was polite, and accommodating. We were able change the reservation, check-in early and stretch checkout ... thanks to the friendly front desk. We got special requests and answers to questions quickly. The local resraurant advice was perfect. The room was average size and the bathroom a little small. But the room and bath fixtures were new and nice.

There is a plethora to do in downtown Chicago. Essex Inn was a perfect central hub for my excursions. As their slogan goes, ... "Essex Inn, your key to the city." I was shocked by the tiny size of the room considering the cost of the room. Also, the a/c and heat are centrally controlled. No temperature adjustment. This proved to be no problem. I just added an extra blanket if I was cold and vice versa when I was warm. Amazing pool with atrium glass. Breathtaking view of Grant Park and downtown at night is picturesque when viewed from rooftop garden adjacent to pool. Despite the oddities of a tiny room and centrally controlled temp., the amenities were quite comfortable and more than adequate. For the price I don't think on can find a better location. Ask for a corner room.

Hot Doug's - World Renowned hot dog dive (or as it's lovingly known "encased meat emporium"). Just google it. You must make this trek. Take the Blue Line toward O'Hare. Get off at California. Exit the train platform and walk north (right) on California. Stop at the first bus stop for route 52. Take route 52 bus to Roscoe/California (Stop ID: 3204). Hot Doug's is on your left.

We asked the concierge about the distance to a particular destination. He did his best to tell us, not knowing our time constraints, as we were meeting friends. When I inquired about calling a cab, he informed us one is stationed outside 24 hours. This may be standard protocol in Chicago, but we found it to be hugely convenient!
