(from a blog I am writing about the experience) Brand Reinvention W Hotels Staying "Aloft" We recently spent a week in the ... new Aloft Hotel in Lexington, MA. This is one of a growing line-up of Starwood Hotel properties in the US that target hipster thirty-something business travelers whose budgets don't quite allow for the full "W Hotel" experience. The Lexington location is a recently renovated version of one of the multitudinous low-rise hotels that dot the exits of major highways in the US. But, the formerly bland eighties-style structure has been given a total makeover capitalizing on artfully designed brand experience to attract the younger, urban, trend-savvy business traveller. "Style at a steal" is their tagline and they don't disappoint! The first thing you see when you wind up the driveway to the hotel is the massive, colourfully striped, backlit overhang and an eight foot, 3-D version of the funky Aloft logotype. As soon as you get out of your car you hear the electronic beat of the house music that gets pumped throughout the hotel 24/7. (I would have preferred mellow jazz but then I am no longer a hipster thirty-something.) So, right away, it signals a different kind of experience. Described on their website as "a forward thinking alternative to the typical travel destination", they talk about things like loft-inspired design, free-flowing energy and a vibrant social scene. Sounds like a tall order for a mid-range hotel just off the Mass turnpike but, I was impressed at how well they deliver on their promise of something intuitive, playful and different. The lobby area is more like the giant, free-flowing rec-room of some young Hollywood A-lister complete with magenta pool table, designer chess boards, flat screen TVs, sleek lounge furniture (slung with tie-died decorator pillows) and the sexiest bar ever. At one end is an open kitchen where you can make your own Americano and grab a biscotti or trendy protein shake any time and just add it to your room tab. There is even a "re:stock" station where you can pick up anything you might have forgotten from toothbrushes to contraception. It feels more like visiting someone's very cool home than a hotel. The formula really works because no matter what time of day or night you enter the place, it's vibrating! Guests are playing pool, reading books, checking email or just generally hanging out. At night, the music gets turned up, the martinis start flowing and people are playing team trivia and even speed dating. And, long after you leave the hotel, you can continue to sync up with the social scene online via Aloft facebook, Twitter or even their online billiards game. From a business traveller's perspective, the Aloft concept is a refreshing alternative to the tired, predictable and very impersonal mid-budget hotel experience. From a brander's perspective, it is a great example of focussing narrowly on one customer group, getting to know them well and redefining the brand experience based on the needs and desires of that customer. It's gutsy and I think it really works.

Spent our anniversary here for a week and was blown away. We were visiting from out of country and had concert (u2) tickets ... sent there. Also hadsome bruins tickets sent there too. They were so accomadating. The room was brand new and having HD in the room was a nice treat. There was an iron and ample space for both my wife and I to hang clothes. New hotel smell was just great. Best part of the trip was that the front desk knew our names and were ALWAYS cheerful and willing to help. The bar has a really nice drink (x-rated passion) that we had each night before going to bed. A fridge to store leftovers and beer was also a great added touch. view on the fourth floor was really nice too. If I ever come back to Boston I'm going to call them again without hesitation. These guys know how to run a hotel!!

Great overall experience, a new hotel expected to be clean and crisp and they didn't disappoint, except...I would have liked ... to see complimentary coffee available in the lobby. The coffee from the in room machines is as we all know quite inadequate and at $2.50 for a small(12 ounce) cup, they should do better than that!

Not as advertised
Jackie Jun 16, 2009
From the pictures on the internet I thought this would be a very good stay. But nothing, the room, the pool, was up to what ... was advertised. It was all very small. In order to get ice or refreshments we had to go all the way downstairs. You couldnt enter through any door but the front which made for long trip due to limited parking.

Great hotel! Ultra modern. Clean. Friendly staff. Good location for sight-seeing. The only thing that would have made it ... better would be if it were accessible by passenger rail, with transportation from the hotel to local attractions.

Good Location for History Buffs
Bill Aug 23, 2008
Aloft Lexington is three miles from the town's Common, site of first skirmish of the Revolution. Also, the Minuteman National ... Park begins just west of the hotel. Rooms are spacious, decor is modern. On the other hand, the restaurant was basically a food kiosk, like a continental breakfast, but you had to pay for it. The hotel's site could mention the MBTA bus which passes near the hotel, going to the T Red Line Alewife station, or give driving directions to the station; you do NOT want to drive into Boston.

Hip Hotel/LARGE rooms
Emilyn Jul 23, 2008
Aloft turned out to be a fabulous find. The hotel is Hip with nice size rooms and extremely reasonable price point. I took 2 ... rooms, one for my teenage daughter and one for myself. We both loved the Bliss amenities and the excellent shower heads. The workout room was sufficient and the pool and outdoor seating areas were very zen. There were 2 computers in the lobby, open for hotel guests use, free of charge. Aloft had a friendly atmosphere with an unusual mix of hotel guests. It ranged from families with young children to business men to older vacation travelers not often seen in a Schraeger type setting. Most important was that I felt ok about allowing my teenage daughter to use the hotel facilities by herself. You do need a car.

It was a short drive into the lovely town of Lexington where they even had a Peets coffee shop. And the Burlington Mall was only 2 exits away on the HWY. Sophisticated shops and a Legal Seafood.
