Great location

Business traveler on a budget. Nov 10, 2009

Would recommend to a friend!

Great location. Small rooms, but only slept there, so it was not a problem. Sound between the door and the hallway was a bit ... loud, but in an older building, sound transmission is to be expected. Staff was very helpful and allowed us to check in early and check backs at the front desk after we had checked out. Front door was supposed to be locked after 9pm, but wasn't, which actually made it easier to get into the lobby where staff was at the front desk. Did not feel unsafe, though I might have felt more safe if they had made me show my key to verify I was actually staying at the hotel. Great place, great location, great staff. I'd definitely stay there again.

The rooms are small but comfortable. The Baldwin gives you the feeling of living in the city decades before with modern ... upgrades. Doesn't have the cookie-cutter feeling of chain hotels. Very close to china town and easy assess to public buses and cable cars for quick transportation to other districts of interest within the city.

The location is fine, and the staff is truly welcoming and helpful. The fact that the rooms were small is not important, but ... they were filled with dark furnishings and fixtures. Lightbulbs of about 15 watts. Need to lighten up! The bathroom was marginal: a freestanding tub with a shower pipe extending from it, surrounded by shower curtains on all sides. Really difficult to use without washing the floor. No glass in room to drink water from!!! Would improve with a hair dryer

great location for access to Union square and China town. The room was great but unfortunately was also right next to the ... elevator which was REALLY noisy and was still going even at 4:ooin the morning. OK for the money

Andrei Dec 18, 2008

I have been on a trip to SF at a scientific meeting and this hotel near Moscone Center mostly because it is inexpensive. The ... hotel is located in 10-15 minutes walk from Moscone, near Chinatown. The area has plenty of shops and food places and seems safe at night. This hotel is probably OK for the money, however there are issues: 1. Not very responsive stuff. When I checked in, no one was at the front deck and the sign said will be back in 5 minutes. In fact, I waited 12 or so minutes until the clerk was back; 2. VERY old and noisy elevator. I used earplugs (fortunately, I had them) so slept moderately well. However, I have heard the elevator even through the earplugs! 3. No cafeteria or restaurant was on premises. 4. No coffee maker in the room. So if you need a place just to sleep (as I did), eat outside and bring earplugs with you, this hotel is fine.

I stayed at the Baldwin Hotel on a Friday and Saturday night. I was very pleased with the value for the room. I stayed in a ... two Queen bed room, which although small, had a spacious bathroom. For the location, which is right in the center of Union Square, the value is great. I am looking to stay here for my future stays in San Francisco. It is not fancy, but clean and very close to nearly everything in Union Square.

Bigger Than Most Rooms in SF

Kevin Scott Nov 22, 2008

Would recommend to a friend!

The Baldwin has a nice sized room, walk in closet and an ample bathroom. It had a desk area and a safe in the closet. Having ... the remote for the TV Velcroed to the nightstand was super annoying but can be managed. For an older hotel, this place is in great shape. We were on the 11th floor and had a good view of downtown and Chinatown. If you want a great value and something right next to Chinatown, this is your hotel. The hotel had mediocre coffee and donuts out in the morning, that I would suggest avoiding. The French Cafe across the street is amazing. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. They helped us with an early check in request, recommending restaurants and calling cabs for us,

I enjoy ?Old Hotels? with character - this was just perfect closed to the conference, the Bart and right around the corner ... from a great restaurant on 3rd Avenue and Sutter Street, called E&O Trading Company. The restaurant ambiance, service, Pan Asian food, and the Mojitos were excellent. Room was just right for one person, with ample space, clean and quite. Very nice for the money

Kristen Jul 5, 2008

Would recommend to a friend!

We checked in a little early and the hotel staff was very accomodating. We were given old fashioned keys to our room, yes ... actual keys, and were a little worried to what sort of an old mess of a hotel room we would walk into upstairs. Needless to say we were very surprised! The room was freshly painted and besides the antique television set, newly updated. The bathroom was very small but very cute. The view was nice, we could see the entrance to China Town. The windows opened up completely though, so do keep an eye on the little ones! The staff was helpful especially when it came to bus routes. They also lock the front door after nine which is good for safety. The computer in the lobby does have a fee for the internet and of course there is no wi-fi. It turns out the old fashined keys were a great representation of The Baldwin- it is an older hotel but nonetheless had a great feel and was very charming. I would definitely recommend it if you are looking for a good deal in a great area of the City.
