The best Thrift/Junk shop in the world located between 5th & 6th St. on Howard @ 952 Howard St. The store is called Moving Sale, but they're not going anywhere [It's just the name]. It's better than a garage sale, it's the whole house!

If you get the urge to rent a bicycle to cross the Golden Gate Bridge, consider bypassing the excessively advertised bike rental shops near Fisherman's Wharf and make your way towards the entrance of Fort Mason. There you will find a small bicycle rental place that charges significantly less to rent a bicycle for the hour. Unfortunately you're not provided a map like you are on the others, but you'll be hard pressed to not find a group of bicyclists you can "follow" through Crissy Field, the Presidio, and towards the bridge.

Given the description of the hotel, I was disappointed. Most importantly, the hotel is on the edge of the Tenderloin, which ... as undesirable part of San Francisco. The overall experience was satisfactory, and the room rates were quite good. The valet parking was convenient, but the amount of time it takes to get the car can be anywhere from 5 minutes to 20 minutes.

The price is right in an outstanding location - convenient to Bart & Muni Metro - easy to get to the airport or from Amtrak; ... near the cable car line. Rooms are adequate & clean and continental breakfast is provided. The neighborhood can be a bit noisy at night, but no serious complaints.

Great find
traveler from Canada Aug 30, 2009
I stayed for 5 nights at the hotel Bijou to attend a conference at a nearby, more expensive, hotel. The Bijou (if the name ... did not give it already) is a movie theater-themed hotel that has a mini-cinema and rooms named/decorated after movies. Most of my fellow travelers seemed to be families - many of them European. The Bijou is located a short block from the BART Powell station, and very close to Union Square. The neighborhood is a downtown mix, which may get loud at night and some parts not far from the hotel may be a bit sketchy. However, I am a single woman, and did not get into any trouble when walking from the conference to the Bijou at night. The room was fairly small (only shower, no bath, small TV), but clean and comfortable. The bed was great. The personnel was friendly and useful - coffee/tea are available all day, and continental breakfast is served in the morning (nothing elaborate, but bagels were good). I did not have any problem connecting to the (free) wireless, which is a key thing for me. I travel to San Francisco fairly frequently, and always stay at boutique hotels - I will be back at the Bijou!

Location is perfet for San Francisco. Hotel is A ONE TO TWO BLOCK WALK TO: San Francisco Visitor Information Center, BART, ... Powell Street Station, beginning of Cable Car line, a variety of fast food places for pizza, burgers, subs, a food court in shopping mall, plenty of shopping and 2 small groceries stores. Nightly movies in hotel's mini theatre are a real treat. Loved it!

We were supposed to have a single Queen bed & we had two Full beds. Our room was directly next to the elevator & the motor ... vibrated all night. Would have complained had we stayed for more than one night. + there is a noisy bar next door & we were on the second floor, so it was loud until after it closed.

Opinion of Hotel Bijou
Demitra Aug 8, 2009
Our stay at the Hotel Bijou was ok overall. The rooms are small and ours overlooked a shady and very noisy street. On the up ... side it was not far from Union Square and just a short walk to Chinatown. The staff was good at giving directions and when asked told you which way not to walk. If it's the movie theater aspect of the hotel that attracts you, don't be sucked in based on that. When they say petit theater they mean it--eight seats and no popcorn!!:( I would recommend this hotel to a friend only if they were worried about cash flow.

A Diamond in the Rough!
letsgoblue2002 Jul 25, 2009
The Hotel Bijou is a genuine diamond in the rough! I had only a few "issues" with the hotel... 1) no refrigerator in the ... room 2) street noise from Eddy Street at night 3) slow elevator 4) proximity to the Tenderloin district (attitude changed after one night, though) Now for the positives... 1) courteous staff with a great knowledge of SF 2) clean sheets, bed, pillow, towels, room, etc. 3) shower was very good and hot water aplenty! 4) location/proximity to Powell Station (BART) - 1 block away (thus saving on trans to/from SFO) 5) 30 second walk to Powell Station cable car 5) location/proximity to shopping - 2 blocks away from the Westfield SF Centre Granted, the location of Hotel Bijou on the outskirts of the Tenderloin district may give some travelers an uneasy feeling about staying a few nights, rest assured, however, I was traveling alone and never had a problem, never felt unsafe or insecure. The doors do close at 7pm but you can use your room keycard to enter the front doors with ease. Additionally, the area is pretty well lit and there were always other tourists walking on Mason Street. In my opinion, you're more likely to lose your money to the vendors at Fisherman's Wharf than you are in front of the hotel. That being said, it's always a good idea to always be careful of your surroundings no matter where in San Francisco you're at. All in all, the Hotel Bijou was a pleasant hotel and I greatly enjoyed my stay. It is a great bargain in a good area of town, and I would highly recommend it to single/group travelers.

We extended our business vacation and downgraded to a more affordable place on our own dime. This hotel was one of the ... cheaper we could find. The place was clean and cute and cozy (our particular room was a little small, but it was the cheapest room). The night front desk guy was super nice and friendly, the woman during the day wasn't unfriendly, but not as welcoming. The hotel was nearby union square and loads of public transportation. The particular block it is situated on is not the greatest, expect loud drunks and such during the night (they provide earplugs). If your window is opposite of Eddy, it would probably be nice and quiet. That being said, you walk one block in 3 directions and its nicer areas. The hotel provides free wifi but I could never get it to work on my computer. The front desk guy offered to connect me with tech support though I never took him up on it. They also give a free continental breakfast which consists of decent coffee, tea, cereal, bagels. muffins and hard boiled eggs. Overall I'd stay there again, but I'd bring some sleeping pills and maybe even a super soaker to shoot at the loud drunks at 3am ;)

Baseball Fan Jun 1, 2009
We went to San Francisco to go to a couple of baseball games and enjoy the local restaurants. The hotel is located within a ... block of a BART station which made traveling around very easy. It was also close to Market Street so shopping and restaurants were all close by. The rooms were clean. The hotel staff was friendly and helpful. The only problem was the noise. We were on the 4th floor yet we could easily hear the voices from people on the street. There were some homeless individuals making a lot of noise during the night. It woke us up several times. It must be a continuous problem because the hotel provides ear plugs in the room.

My husband accompanied me while I attended a coffee roasting class in nearby Marin county. The Front desk staff was great! ... The breakfast in the morning was really bland. Fresh fruit- a flower arrangement, even a fake one would have helped. The old saying "the devil is in the details" when we first arrived I went into the bathroom and saw a sticky dust clob combined with black curly hair... I couldn't ignore it, and I didn't want to clean it myself, but I did. It isn't that big of a deal, but it started me off on a note of "eeeewwwwwhhh" apart from that, for the price, The aging hotel was kind of quaint. It seems like they need to put some $ in upgrades if they can. Compared to previous trips this is probabaly one of the worst hotels we have stayed in based on location, room size and cleanliness

you can find a parking spot on the street if you don't mind moving your car, or putting money in the meter by 6am. We were always up so it wasn't a big deal. Our car was safe. I would not have felt safe parking and walking if I had been a single woman alone, but with my husband it was fine.
