Great hotel
World Traveller Dec 2, 2009
Perfectly located for walking to the sites such as The White House & The National Mall. Also only 5 minutes from nearest ... metro station, so easy to visit such places as Arlington & also Pentagon City for the shopping mall. Well appointed rooms, our room was at the front on 11th floor, so good views.

The restaurant in the hotel is very good, but not cheap. We found the Capital City Brewery which is located on the corner of H & 11th, good food & really good beer, also shows the football, but if you want to watch this make sure you are seated in the bar area. Didn't try breakfast in the hotel as had read it is overpriced, there is a Au Bon Pain on 14th, which does good pastries, perfect to start the day.

The in-room food and mini bar are pricey. We brought our own champagne and Coke and put it in the room's fridge...cold and refreshing when we returned from our metro trip to the museums! Make sure you know the most direct way to the metro...not too long of a walk (maybe three blocks?) but longer and confusing if you go the wrong way.

Urbanite artist foodies on a budget

We are young professionals who are newly wed. Exceeded our expectations. Great atmosphere. Don't forget to bring your ipod to ... use in the docking station. Other reviewer who mentioned dirty shower was correct, however, they simply need re-chalking and the cleanliness was superior in all other aspects. Wonderful toiletries provided. Fabulous if you have Alexander Wang taste but are traveling on a Forever21 budget. Take the Red Line up to Woodley Park/ Adams Morgen and walk across the Duke Ellington bridge for fabulous food scene and nightclubs if you like eclectic/good design/hole in the wall local favorites. Ate Nepalese food and had amazing bread pudding at The Diner (very budget friendly as well)...just be street smart, urban area.

Nice hotel but poor service
X&P Nov 24, 2009
The hotel is very well located, close to the White House and to Dupont Circle's restaurants. The design is very modern and ... funky and the staff friendly. Rooms are spacious and very clean, beds are very comfortable. However, we were disturbed twice (in three days) by staff mistaking our room for another one, and room service wasn't professional : a breakfast ordered for 7am arrived at 7:30 after calling twice. Showers are very good looking and original, but the water flow is unconveniently low making hair washing difficult for ladies.

Housekeeping did not come until late at night(8:30 p.m.). We had to request towels, garbage pickup, etc. or watch them clean ... after we were settled in. The requests were answered swiftly but we felt like pests. They did the room once in 4 days while we were gone.

Great but only for single person
Capitol Traveler Nov 20, 2009
My husband and I selected this hotel because for us it is within walking distance (less than 2 miles) to many D.C. ... attractions. We seek out boutique hotels and enjoyed the Donovan House's stylish, modern interior. Our room was extremely quiet and very clean. The room was well designed for a single person but did not accommodate two comfortably. There is only one difficult to move chair and it is at a desk from which it is impossible to see the TV. One rather unwelcoming detail is that there is a fee for using the in-room coffee or tea.

Very trendy hotel. But not very high end features. Bathroom was more looks than functionality. Nice helpful staff. Good ... location between Dupont Circle and the monuments. Good price. Would still stay here before the Marriott across the street. Supposed to have a great pool on the roof, but we were there when it was too cold to try it out.

We went on a last minute romantic getaway and the hotel was the icing on the cake! Super easy to find, reasonable room rate, ... super friendly and helpful staff and the room was unbelievable! Very unique yet ergonomic-plus the platform bed was SUPER comfortable! The service was fast and friendly and the only kind of downer was that they charged for the coffee in the mini bar...otherwise I would definitely recommend it for a couple's weekend!

Everything is in walking distance from the hotel-every kind of restaurant, museum, monument and attraction possible...but I would recommend checking out the Old Town Trolley tours. We went on the monuments by moonlight and it was worth every penny!

I traveled to DC for a conference held at the convention center and Renaissance Hotel. The room decor, cleanliness, and ... comfort level were excellent. This hotel had been a Holiday Inn but extensive renovations were apparent. My room was somewhat small and did not have a desk, which was inconvenient. The convention center and National Mall are both 15 minutes away when walking.

They gave me ... directions and tips to start my day and always greated me with a smile and a "well how did it go?" When I got back. The room was very clean and comfortable. It was pretty well located to get around DC. Close to the Metro and really walking distance to most places you'd like to go. I would stay there again.

As a business traveler I loathe corporate hotels and always look for a boutique hotel that balances my work needs with ... personalized service. The Donovan is in an excellent location, is perfectly appointed, and has the warmest and most professional staff I have encountered in years. From my arrival at midnight to my hurried departure in the late afternoon, they treated me as if I was their highest priority. The gentleman that maintained my room made me feel like he took personal interest in my comfort. I will return to the Donovan each time I am in DC.

unsatisfied couple Sep 14, 2009
The initial check in went ok, but the staff could have been a lot friendlier. The building was far smaller than expected, ... but cute and trendy. The room was smaller as well, but entirely doable. The bad part was the poor quality of the entire place. There were tons of places where paint was splattered, lights were in the wrong place and had wires or wood showing. It felt as though the contractor had the entire building completed in the 1/2 the time it should have taken. This hotel could have been great, but instead it was just cheap. The bathroom is a whole other issue... the sink didn't drain, the shelves are completely in the way and I managed to hit my head about 5 times and i'm not a big person. The shower is also made of plastic, so it is very slippery and also does not drain well. The last complaint is that we had two people in the room and only one robe was given to us. This is a completely simple aspect of the room, but it made us feel like our satisfaction was not their number one concern. Would not stay here again unless it was the only hotel open in the area because location is all it had going for it other than the comphy pool-side furniture.

We enjoyed: Posto on 14th street north of P street (reasonably priced Italian the brick oven pizza was to die for), 14K Bar and Grill on the corner of 14th street and K street (expensive but the taste and quality was 1st class), and Logan Tavern on P street west of 14th street (reasonably priced and the menu was very diverse).
