Monaco - San Francisco
Anthony Lambert Oct 1, 2009
Choose hotel for location, design and dining rooms. Was pleased on most accounts but found the housekeeping of design ... elements--beds, sofas, tables off center from mirrors and pictures in rooms and lobbies--very disconcerting to an interior designer (me). Need a designer to go through and freshen up the placement of furniture and design elements--cleaning staff and guests are pushing furniture and lighting around and upsetting the design balance the hotel has tried to hard to achieve. Dining rooms were appreciated and one of the reasons we chose The Monaco. Wait staff was very good but food quality was quite mediocre.

The location allows you to go into the heart of downtown and enjoy all the beautiful shops and restaurants. It is also in the right area to go west to get to other parts of the city and Bay Area without encountering the heavy traffic of downtown.

Look around for over nite parking garages. They are much more reasonable. I would suggest just using public transportation, or walking.

Lots of restaurants within walking distance (1-3 blocks) for all types of food. Dinner, I'd recommend Scoma's by the Wharf, somewhat pricey, but excellent seafood (caught daily)!

"Unbeatable location for the price"
LPD Sep 28, 2009
I love Hotel Monaco, have stayed here many times on business and with family. This is the first time I booked with Orbitz ... which offered the best value, and had the round trip shuttle option on it, which was great. I asked for a late checkout because my flight to Sydney Australia is at 10pm and I was given a 2pm checkout, The rooms are wonderful, the staff is very helpful, the restaurant is one of the best. One of the best hotels to stay in San Francisco.

I have tried many of the small hotels in the area and I thought this one was the best. The room was attractive and clean and ... everyone was very nice and helpful.

Not anything outstanding
cfit54 May 12, 2009
The best feature was the friendly staff which was always ready to help you. For the area the hotel was just average. The ... parking fee was outrageous, but then all the hotels in the area are running up to $50.00 a day if you want to valet. There are several over nite parking garages at a lower price. I would never recommend renting a car, no parking anywhere you want to go and meters are good for an hour or two.

Very nice stay
Larry May 8, 2009
We had a very enjoyable stay. All of the staff were very helpful and friendly. The service was more personal than in many ... larger hotels where I have stayed. When we checked in, the lady at the front desk asked what brought us to San Francisco. We are a gay couple, and told her that we were celebrating our anniversary. She congratulated us, and made us feel completely welcome. We really appreciated that. The room was a little smaller than I expected, but nicely decorated, very clean, and comfortable. We had an interior room, with the window facing an air shaft. No view, but there was no street noise, so it was quiet, which is important to us. The location just two blocks from Union Square is very convenient if you want to stay in the shopping, theater, and convention districts.

Great location, best kept secret!
Richard Jul 10, 2008
Overall, I'd gladly stay at this hotel again. Right from the start, the door attendants and check in staff were polite, ... professional and efficient. The room was somewhat small but provided all the amenities: very comfortable bed, adequate dresser (lots of room for hanging clothes)working desk with computer access and I-Pod hook up (also an I-Pod accessible clock radio), good size TV, stocked refridgerator, and even a mini stereo (with CD player). Bathroom was reasonably sized and provided all amenities. Forgotten items (i.e. mouthwash, deodorant, etc..) were readily available and delivered promptly. Room was quiet, peaceful (recommend getting a corner room)and clean, clean, clean. Location was ideal for walking (approx. 1.5 blocks) to Union Square (shopping), boarding the trolley (approx. 3 blocks) for Fisherman's wharf, or catching the subway or bus. Also, hotel is just around the corner from one of the best (expect a wait), small breakfast restaurants, Dottie's. Hotel also is linked to a private car rental agency, which offered better rates than the Big name car rental companies, plus you could pick up and return the car at the main entrance of the hotel! Parking is too expensive, recommend this option if travel is required or just walk. Hotel offered a wine (pop for kids), cheese, and crackers social daily around 5pm which was terrific for socializing. Exercise room was clean and complete, hot tub room appeared to look like a living room (nicely decorated and very peaceful),with available towels.

This hotel would be well located and that the rooms would be small. This proved to be true - but the hotel is well placed - ... staff are very helpful and this was a welcome change to the impersonal chains. Monarch Maverick Director of Pet Relations is a lovely chocolate lab who wears a brown robe and greets pets (and other guests) in the lobby with a worldly yawn - since the theme of the hotel is to be international and cosmopolitan. The Grand Cafe is a wonderful restaurant which we enjoyed so much that we ate three meals there during a 2 day stay.

Old time charm Perfect location
Jimmy Sep 22, 2007
The Monaco prides itself on customer service and it shows. The entire staff was very friendly and couldn't do enough for ... you. From finding phone numbers to booking tours and arranging transfers, just ask and it will happen. The room was uniqely decorated; plush and comfortable. The poster bed was dressed up like a tent in royal colors and was very inviting. We enjoyed returning to the room in the evening. The hotel is located just two blocks from the trolley and was right in the middle of everything. The spa in the basement is also a very pleasant surprise. Be sure to get a massage while you are there.

Walk two blocks downhill to Powell St and catch the Hyde Park trolley down to Fisherman's Warf. Very touristy but definitely fun and worth the trip. Go to the end of Pier 39 and have a great seafood lunh while watching the sea lions or looking out over the bay and Alcatraz. Pick up some souvenirs on the way back. Don't forget your camera.

Charming Hotel

This hotel was very charming with excellent service. They have a happy hour every day at 5:00 with wine and cheese, neck ... massage and tarot card reading - great fun! I do recommend avoiding the canopy bed size room - it's too small but otherwise, it was a great hotel.

Great boutique hotel
jeffrey Jun 25, 2007
My girlfriend and I stayed at the Monaco for the first time and will be coming back. Very attentive staff, great ... sauna/fitness center and spa. Our room was on the small side but no complaints, it was quiet, clean and very comfortable. Their 5:00 wine happy hour is a bit overrated, we discovered a great wine shop next just around the corner on Taylor called The Napa Valley Wine Exchange. Picked up a few bottles of excellent reds, bought some cheese and crackers at the market across the street and had our own happy hour. We had an excellent dinner at The Monaco and really like the warm, easy going atmosphere of their bar. Just 2 blocks from Union Square and all the great shopping.
