The only other Swissotel I have stayed in is the one in Lima, Peru, and it was beautiful. This one in Amsterdam, not so ... much.I'll echo all the comments you read here about the location - it's excellent. Trams 4, 9, 16, 24, and 25 stop right in front of the hotel, and a bunch of others one block behind the hotel. It's a 10 minute walk to Central Station, or the next stop on any of the trams headed north. The staff has been nice, no complaints there. The gym is adequate (open 24/7); actually that was one of the reasons I chose the Swissotel was so that I could use the treadmill and not many hotels in Amsterdam seem to have a gym. The three computers with free internet access 24/7 was very nice as well.[...]. This was a great rate, and would have been even more disappointed if I would have spent more money than this. The hotel has ZERO character. The hallways looks like a cheap cruiseship. The first room I was given had stains on the toilet, used soap by the sink, and an almost empty water bottle. It was an ugly room, very uninviting and sterile.I returned to the lobby and was provided a different room right away. This room was clearly a newer, more updated room. It actually had wood, so some contrast in the room and exactly as is shown in the previous reviewer's pictures. Clearly some rooms are much nicer than others decor-wise, however the room was still pretty skimpy. So if you want some character in your room, don't stay here. Otherwise it was adequate, but did not meet the expectations I had of Swissotel. The last hotel I stayed at in Amsterdam was a modern B&B called The Weber and I loved it, very cool minimalist place by the Leidseplein. I would stay there again, while I would not at the Swissotel.

Swissotel Amsterdam - a good choice

Amsterdam business traveler Dec 8, 2009

Would recommend to a friend!

Location of the hotel is ideal. We especially noticed that when exploring different areas - where we were was perfect. You ... can walk to anywhere of interest - we never used public transportation. Came from the airport into town with the train, and you can easily walk to hotel from Amsterdam Centraal Station (main train station). Hotel rooms are pleasant and clean, comfortable beds, super clean bathroom with granite tile flooring and granits sink surround. Conveniences we're used from the U.S. that you often don't find in European hotels. Some nice added touches like warmed towels as the towel rack is a towel heater at the same time. Grohe shower fixtures where you actually set the desired temperature (yes, its in Celcius, not Fahrenheit). Nespresso machines is great. Small fridge in every room - intended as minibar but you can use it for a few items yourself. Safe is big enough to hold even larger size laptops - that was important. 1st floor (which would be called 2nd floor in the U.S.) has a convenient room with 3 PCs for free internet access (if you want wireless from your room, it's 15 Euros per day). Didn't take their breakfast as 20 Euros per person is overpriced. Couple of bakeries are a good option as they sell good coffee as well and have a few tables where you can sit down. I've read reviews where people complained about the water pressure in the shower: that's not due to the hotel, but it's the European way to conserve water. Showers are more like a 'soft rain' rather than a water massage :-) The hotel staff was extremely friendly - you don't see that much in many hotels.

Across the street is a upscale department store called Bijenkorf - comparable to Harrods in London, or Bloomingdales in the U.S. On 5th floor is also a restaurant that's convenient with high quality food items and all fresh made juices (Jamba-Juice "like").

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly!!!

PFT Oct 26, 2009

Front Desk Staff was GREAT and had excellent Knowledge of the city. Unfortunate for us,construction crews are working on the ... building not 15 feet from our room and no one warned us!! Construction started at 0700 with air hammers breaking concrete and lasted until 1830 on some evenings (you could set your watch to their schedule). We tried to change rooms, but the house was full. We paid for a "Premium" room, and received what we considered a smaller than average size room. There was nothing special about the accomidations except that they were clean. We were disappointed

Great, centralized location; American-Style Hotel with relatively spacious and very clean rooms; Comfortable walking distance ... to everything that Amsterdam has to offer, but bicycle rental and public transport are very close by for those who don't want to walk the city; Restaurant was beautifully decorated, but we did not dine there so are unable to comment on food or service; Staff was friendly & helpful; Free internet access on several desktop computers (with printer) available in the business center; Hotel also had free workout facilities that we did not use so we cannot comment

The staff was very courteous and worked hard at delivering a sense of intimacy. The room was simple and classic. The hotel ... felt small without the multiple restaurant selections and meeting spaces of a typical American downtown hotel. The neighborhood offers a variety of restaurants and shopping experiences. The hotel's Damrack street location is active and "touristy".

Unless you're in the market for diamond jewelery, avoid the red school bus city tour offered up the street near the train station. It's billed as 1 hr/45 minute adventure of which 1 hr. is consumed by a mandatory tour of a diamond factory.

Swissotel Amsterdam

Would recommend to a friend!

All around terrific experience at the Swissotel Amsterdam. It is in the center of everything and a convenient 10-15 minute ... walk from the main Central Train Station. Service was efficient from start to finish and upon checking in we were upgraded to a nicer room (Ask for #435) when we mentioned to the manager ([...]great man BTW) that we were on our honeymoon. We didn't eat at the restaurant so you are on your own there. You can't go wrong staying here!

Loved this Hotel

nicole Jul 5, 2009

Would recommend to a friend!

Location was fantastic. Hotel staff were simply the best. Had a quiet room on the 6th floor which was to be a 'business ... class' room. It had everything I needed but only wish the Television had been a little bigger. But so many good things about this hotel. Free internet, fast, VERY fast elevators. Clean and comfortable rooms with comfy beds. I will not hesitate to book again and think it was wonderful hotel for the price. We shopped locally, a blue and white store with good salads and sandwiches, drinks, etc just a few doors from the McDonalds just next door to hotel. We had a fridge so we put store bought goods for breakfast and snacks. Probably more good about this hotel but can't think at the moment. just really really nice time. Loved Anne Frank house and Van Gogh museum. Book online in advance so no wait in the long lines. Oh, Aircon was perfect, worked really well and I had no trouble staying very cool during a hot spell in A/dam.

When in amsterdam, rent a bike. The city is very bike friendly, and you will see so much more, especially when visiting for a short time. Also, do go on one of the boat tours, which start just down Damrack street, a few minutes from the hotel.

Location! Location! Location!

Swissotel Amsteram was perfect for our short stay in Amsterdam. It is on the same street as Central Station, Dam Square and ... numerous restaurants. The rooms are small but VERY clean and modern. There is a business center for you to check your email and a workout room for those who feel inclined. Staff was friendly and accommodating. We would definitely stay there again!

The Swissotel Amsterdam was great. The location is perfect as it is maybe 4 steps to Dam square. As Amsterdam is a walking ... city, the hotel is perfectly situated. The rooms were very clean and bigger than i had expected. The staff at the front desk were very helpful and friendly when i had to deal with them. Overall i would give this property a 9/10 and would deff stay here the next time i am in Amsterdam!

Friendly, helpful staff

Staff were very friendly and helpful. One called an canal boat co. and located a canal boat cruise that was w'chair ... accessible. Another offered to help my spouse see if he could get on a tram in his w'chair. In addition, the variety and quality of breakfast food were fabulous. The location is convenient, esp. if you use the trams. Having complimentary use of Internet in business center was wonderful.

Shopping tip, Short Walk

An shopping center in a beautiful former post office building and a supermarket are within a few blocks. These are interesting to visit just to see what is for sale even if you do not need or want to purchase anything. Also a department store is across the street.

Shopping tip, Short Walk

Across the street is a upscale department store called Bijenkorf - comparable to Harrods in London, or Bloomingdales in the U.S. On 5th floor is also a restaurant that's convenient with high quality food items and all fresh made juices (Jamba-Juice "like").

Dining tip, Short Walk

There is a great place for a breakfast buffet just down the street on the way to Central Station

--Silverfox ABQ, Albuquerque Oct 26, 2009

Entertainment tip, Short Walk

Dam Square, the Red Light District and a dense population of great coffeeshops are within short walking distance of this hotel.

Money savers tip, Short Walk

Unless you're in the market for diamond jewelery, avoid the red school bus city tour offered up the street near the train station. It's billed as 1 hr/45 minute adventure of which 1 hr. is consumed by a mandatory tour of a diamond factory.

Recreation/Attractions tip, Short Walk

Bike rental shop is about a 5 minute walk from the hotel and so worth it while in Amsterdam....you'll thank yourself!

--SF Traveller, San Francisco, CA Sep 19, 2009

Recreation/Attractions tip, Long Walk

Get tickets to Anne Frank house before you arrive. We needed to wait for an hour

Entertainment tip

About 3 blocks North of the Hotel, across from the water in front of the Goverment Bldgs is a resturant called "Wok", this is a great place to have Dinner (It's a little expensive) but the great atmosphere makes up for the expense.

Time savers tip

When in amsterdam, rent a bike. The city is very bike friendly, and you will see so much more, especially when visiting for a short time. Also, do go on one of the boat tours, which start just down Damrack street, a few minutes from the hotel.
