Rising from water's edge on the quaint island of Coronado in San Diego, the Hotel del Coronado is considered one of America's most beautiful beach resorts.

A classic historic hotel, The Del was built in 1888 and designated a National Historic Landmark in 1977. Today, The Del offers travelers contemporary luxury in an enchanting Victorian atmosphere. Add the resort's beachfront location, and it's no wonder USA Today calls The Del one of the top ten resorts in the world. The Del offers a quintessential San Diego resort vacation experience. For those seeking a romantic retreat, the resort's magical architecture and island setting are perfect. In fact, the Travel Channel rated The Del the number-one wedding destination in America. The Del is also a wonderful family vacation destination, featuring abundant recreation, as well as seasonal teen and children's programs. And, for getting down to business, meeting and incentive planners can work with over 65,000 feet of indoor and outdoor meeting and exhibition space.

Hotel del Coronado, situated along 28 oceanfront acres, is an elegant example of Victorian architecture and is considered one of America's most beautiful resorts. The Del has become a living legend with visits by celebrities, U.S. presidents and dignitaries from around the world. In fact, publisher Rand McNally credits the Hotel del Coronado as enjoying more fame and historical significance than perhaps any hotel in North America.

With almost 365 days of sunshine and an award- wining beachfront location, The Del is the premier West Coast leisure destination for family adventures or romantic getaways. The resort offers a variety of casual and fine dining restaurants overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Guests can enjoy year-round recreation activities including surfing, boating, biking or relaxing poolside or on the beach. There are two swimming pools, spa services, fitness center and over 20 shops and boutiques. The charming island village of Coronado is just outside The Del's front door and exciting downtown San Diego is only ten minutes away.

The Hotel del Coronado's Self Parking is now $23 & Valet Parking is $30, per vehicle, per night.

The hotel staff was very friendly and helpful. We received excellent and helpful information as a response to our questions. ... Our room was very clean, the only exception being water rings on the furniture. They should provide coasters that prevent it. I liked our stay very much , but the price was pretty high for the size room we recieved. I know the price was high because I ... scheduled the stay a little late or close to the check in day. Also, I thought paying for the parking ( $25.00 ) at the hotel you are staying at was kind of a drag. All in all the stay was great and the view was great in a great old hotel. Thanks

The Hotel is only equal to the Grand Lodges of some of the National Parks. It is a true experience to stay here and fine ... dining is available at the Hotel or within walking distance. We had a lovely room on the 1st floor Garden view. Sure its not cheap, but our 2 day stay made our vacation memorable. The staff was helpful and friendly, the concierge was the best I ever had in recent memory. Very knowledgeable regarding the Hotel and willing to share information.

Expensive, but probably worth it

Wish I was still on the beach Aug 17, 2009

Would recommend to a friend!

Despite my phone calls ahead of time to both Orbitz and to the hotel to confirm that there would be space for our children, ... when I arrived I was told that the room we booked was too small for the children. Fortunately, after some discussion with the desk, we were given a larger room with a foldout couch; however, the view was of the adjoining red-shingled roof! We couldn't even see the sky. The pool was a zoo and needs a bigger jacuzzi. It was mobbed the day we were there (a Tuesday afternoon). Given these issues, this was a very expensive hotel even with a three nights for price of two special. The beach was incredible, the food excellent and affordable once the "kids eat free" specials were incorporated into the price. These significant positives outweighed the issues with the room and pool, and account for my rating of four stars.

Money savers tip, Short Walk

Rather than rent boogie boards from the hotel, you can purchase them from a surf shop on Orange Avenue for less than the price of an afternoon rental. This will save money if you are there for several days and like to enjoy the waves the way we did. Also, if you travel with kids, the morning brunch special kids eat free ends up being a good deal and cheaper than feeding everyone from the coffee bar in the lobby. Even cheaper is the Panera Bread place on Ocean Avenue next to Starbucks. Panera has better baked goods than Starbucks.

The Hotel del Coranado has all the luxury and amenities that are expected from a top-notch hotel. My wife and I were there ... in July '08 and were delighted with the personal service and attention. There was perfect follow-thru and completion of all expected services and convenience items. Nobody forgot to call back and all of the staff were prompt with their service. The friendly and non-formal atmosphere was great. The rooms were modern and even had 50 flat-panel LCD TV's. In thinking of a down-side, I would have to say the the place is somewhat crowded. Many guests and people on various tours. We loved our stay and will return some day.

Take the ferry from Coronado to the Seaport Village area. I is just as fast as a taxi, but $3.50 each, one way, and is more fun. The dinner criuse in the marina area is great. Tour the USS Midway. Balboa park is just great. The the zoo, while nice, is not any much different that other city zoos, and time is better spent seeing other things.

Great family vacation hotel...but hold on to your wallet!

Elizabeth Jul 10, 2008

Would recommend to a friend!

We visited this hotel on a vacation trip in mid July 2008 (family of 3; 2 adults, 1 toddler). The Hotel Del Coronado is a ... historic landmark and a BEAUTIFUL hotel. The staff, from check-in to room service to the valet parkers, was excellent. They also have plenty of great recommendations, including baby-sitting services if you have kids with you. However, they nickel & dime you EVERYWHERE. We had a basic room in the Ocean Tower (the newer part of the building and, hence, least expensive); it was a little on the pricey side. They charge $20+/day to self-park and just a few dollars more for valet so we just valeted our car during the entire 3-night trip. The window-service restaurant out on the boardwalk with basic beach fare (salads, sandwiches, etc.) was exhorbitant (over $40 for a salad, a burger with fries & a hot dog plus 1 soda)! And after a tough workout in their fitness center, you have to pay $3+ if you want a bottle of water. I was surprised because I've stayed at nice hotels before and small things like this are less expensive or complimentary. Other than these annoyances, the area is great with lots of cafes, art galleries and restaurants within walking distance and they offer TONS of kids' activities on site. One caveat: there's a naval air base just seconds from the beach outside the hotel so flights are constantly landing/taking off overhead and it can be a bit noisey or cool, depending on your persepctive! I would stay there again, though ;)

Eat all your meals outside the hotel property. There are plenty inexpensive-moderately priced bagel/coffee shops for breakfast and, of course, a Starbucks. For lunch or dinner, there are also a variety of full-service restaurants to choose from just a long walk or short drive away.

Quick tip

rooms much overpriced

Wanda Jun 10, 2008

Our room was extremely small one straight chair and only room to walk around the bed. Was in a back corner and not worth ... the money in any way. Would not go there again. Old hotel

Very Pricey

Lori Jan 4, 2008

Would recommend to a friend!

The hotel is very well kept and an awesome historical property. There are many restaurants and shopping within walking ... distance. The room was clean and comfortable. A $25 fee for using the internet, fitness center, and in room coffee pot is automatically added to the bill at check in. I did not agree with this, as it should only be added if you plan on using these facilities. The hotel staff later removed the fee at my request. We did not eat at the hotel as the food and beverages are very pricey. $7 for a glass of beer! We were also disappointed to find the jacuzzi was out of service.

Best Hotel We've Ever Been At

Sadhu Sep 4, 2007

Would recommend to a friend!

We enjoyed a large room with a partial ocean view and balcony in the towers. It was right on the beach. Impressive was ... the view, the 46 plasma TV, the high speed internet, lots of space, great desk, and two sink vanity in the large bathroom. We have been at hundreds of hotels - and Hotel Del was the best of them all.

Shopping tip, Long Walk

Coronado is a very cute town. It seems like you are on another planet from San Diego after going across the bridge.

Dining tip, Short Walk

Eat at the Chez Loma. It's a charming french restaurant about a block from the hotel. The early bird special is resonable and the food was fabulous.

Nightlife tip, In Hotel

It would have been nice that there was a club in the hotel or near the hotel.

Dining tip, Short Walk

It was built in 1887.

Hotel has bikes you can rent. Fun and scenic.

Dining tip, Short Walk

Ask about dining options. We were very disappointed with the food, either too expensive or just lousy.

Recreation/Attractions tip, Long Walk

Take the ferry from Coronado to the Seaport Village area. I is just as fast as a taxi, but $3.50 each, one way, and is more fun. The dinner criuse in the marina area is great. Tour the USS Midway. Balboa park is just great. The the zoo, while nice, is not any much different that other city zoos, and time is better spent seeing other things.
