Too Far Off the Main Road

Carolina Buckeye Jan 15, 2010

I have stayed in Gatlinburg several times and there are much better places to stay. I chose the Sydney James for the indoor ... pool, but the pool is not enough to make me stay here again. First of all, the room was described as 1 bedroom, 1 queen bed. Usually this means there is a separate bedroom again and implies a sitting area. So, I reserved this room believing there would be a sofa or something for my 14-yr.-old son to sleep on. It was just a standard motel room with 1 queen bed. They did have a roll-away bed brought in for no extra charge, but I feel the description was deceiving. The room furniture was outdated, but the rug and curtains appeared new. Although the room seemed clean there was a slight odor, but the bathroom was very clean. It was very noisy at night. Although I was not surprised on New Year's Eve that there were people outside in the parking lot screaming until 2 a.m., it happened the night before as well. The biggest downfall for the inn was that it was too far from the main street in Gatlinburg. After wondering around the main part of Gatlinburg, the half mile walk back to the motel was too far. Plus, there was no place to eat close by. We had already been walking most of the day and were walking down again that night for the New Year's fireworks, but needed dinner in between and didn't want to walk down and back again just to eat. The cafe was suppose to be open, but it wasn't. I went to the front desk to ask about a place to order pizza, the man started searching through his files just to find a phone number. It was like no one had ever asked him that before. Finally another man came up and gave us a coupon with a phone number on it so we could order delivery.

We enjoyed the location as it was within walking distance to the sights in Gatlinburg. The room was just ok. It did not ... have a very clean shower and the knobs were loose on the faucets. The room was comfortable, however, as all we did was use it for a place to sleep and shower. The resaurant was nice and the gal who workded it was friencly.

The stay was great even at this hotel. Price was too high for this type of hotel $81 per night. Location was great, close to ... everything but tucked in a quite location. Update pitures on the wall-I thought I saw mold on them. An iron and a microwave in the room would have been great. Although I did have a fridge that was unexpected and came in handy. I would stay at this hotel again for a lower price.

Use the trolley. I came right in front of the hotel and was only 50 cents. Parking your car in the downtown area is almost impossible and can be costly. Walking was great until the temp dropped and the rain came. Get a the room that backs up to the river- wonderful view.

It's a room, nothing special

L. Oct 17, 2009

The first room we were given reeked of cigarettes even though we had booked a non-smoking room. My husband requested a room ... change and we were given a non-smoking room quickly without a problem. Some rooms are across the street from the pool which is a little inconvenient when it is 50 degrees out. The room was dark, slightly musty and out dated though it did seem clean for the most part or from what I could see. I thought it was a bit tacky that the hotel had their name stamped on the sheets and pillow cases in an institutional fashion. It was about a 10-15 minute walk to the downtown area from the room. I wouldn't stay there again though I don't think I wound go to Gatlinberg again. It was a crowded over priced tacky tourist trap with little to offer. Every place you walk into costs a minimum of $10/person and every shop is a rip off though it was crowded so people must like it there it just wasn't for us. Also many places do not take Amex cards.

I liked the location, and my son loved the pool. The room was outdated, and the water temperature would change unexpectedly ... while taking a shower. The hotel was right in the heart of Gatlinburg. It was great. We were in walking distance of the shops and the sights. The ... room was great, but there were mirrors everywhere and that was a little strange. The mirror right over the bed was a little off. Not my cup of tea. The two person hot tub was fantastic and very relaxing. All in all, I would recommend the hotel but I would make sure the person knew the rooms were a little outdated and that you should like your reflection a whole lot. Not good right after seeing a horror movie.

The hotel location is not too bad, about a 10 - 15 min walk to downtown. There is a pancake house just down the street that ... has good food and friendly service. The staff at the hotel were vey friendly and helpful. We stayed in a single room with a queen bed. There wasn't alot of space in the room but overall wasn't too cramped. The bathroom and general appearance of the room is out dated, but was clean. Overall not a bad choice. Good for a couple looking for a weekend getaway and not planning on spending a lot of time at the resort.

The Tale of Two Lodges

Stephanie upset Aug 7, 2009

There are 2 Lodges the courtside which we stayed at was little better than a hole in the wall with an air conditioner that ... worked only half the time and a pool that was big enough for two frogs. So be careful if you stay here and DO NOT STAY AT THE COURT SIDE. The location was great and because of that we tried to limit ourselves to only sleeping at the lodge.

It was alright, It was good to stay in for the night, but the room was to small if I had to stay for a whole week. The pool ... and hot tub area was very nice to relax in after walking all day. Very disappointed

Disappointed Jul 25, 2009

The hotel was within walking distance to downtown. I was extremely disappointed in the hotel for the money paid. The staff ... were not that friendly. The rooms were not clean. The coffee was not refilled in the room. One of the outside pools was very small and looked dirty. We did not spend anytime in the hotel due to the conditions.

Recreation/Attractions tip, Long Walk

There is a lot to do in Gatlinburg. My son and I had a great time. Just stay somewhere else.

Dining tip, Short Drive

Stay away from the River Walk Pancake House. It's hard to mess up pancakes, but they found a way. Be sure to eat at Bennett's Pit Barbeque. Great ribs and salad bar. Legends by Max is a great value for the money in downtown dining.

--PMehta, Indianapolis IN Oct 19, 2009

Time savers tip, Short Walk

Use the trolley. I came right in front of the hotel and was only 50 cents. Parking your car in the downtown area is almost impossible and can be costly. Walking was great until the temp dropped and the rain came. Get a the room that backs up to the river- wonderful view.

Dining tip, Short Walk

The Smoky Mountain Brewery in town has good beer and on Sun.-Thur. after 9 p.m. they serve $1 drafts.

--L., Greenville, SC Oct 17, 2009

Recreation/Attractions tip, Short Drive

Visit the Chimney Tops and Clingman's Dome.

--vacationing mom, Nashville, TN Oct 16, 2009

Entertainment tip

It is best to walk or take the trolleys everywhere. Driving with all of those people walking across the streets is a little scary.

Time savers tip

There is a Trolli stop right outside the hotel. And you can get a all day pass at the front desk for $2. but we spent so much time waiting for the trolli that doesnt come in short enough intervals. it was quicker just to walk, but your feet hurt after a day of shopping downtown.

--Ashley Rae, Bethel, VT Jul 24, 2009

Money savers tip

Be sure to get the coupon books when you arrive and keep them on your person. There are several deals for kids to eat free and percentage deals at most of the restuarants.

--Mommy Susan, Florence, KY Jul 5, 2009

Dining tip, Long Walk

wear good walking shoes

--snow white, tennessee Jul 4, 2009

Recreation/Attractions tip, Short Walk

Almost all gatlinbirg attractions are within a short walking distance from the lodge and if you chose to venture further the trolley can take you as far as pigeon forge(for a small fee). It will pick you up and drop you off right in front of the lodge.

--trouble408, Shelbyville TN May 30, 2009

Shopping tip, Short Walk

There is lots to do within walking distance from the hotel.

--Michigan traveler, Michigan May 26, 2009

Shopping tip, Short Walk

Downtown Gatlinburg is a short walk but in order to get back to motel, you must climb a very long, very steep hill.

--kvaj, Atlanta, GA May 10, 2009
