Too Far Off the Main Road
Carolina Buckeye Jan 15, 2010
I have stayed in Gatlinburg several times and there are much better places to stay. I chose the Sydney James for the indoor ... pool, but the pool is not enough to make me stay here again. First of all, the room was described as 1 bedroom, 1 queen bed. Usually this means there is a separate bedroom again and implies a sitting area. So, I reserved this room believing there would be a sofa or something for my 14-yr.-old son to sleep on. It was just a standard motel room with 1 queen bed. They did have a roll-away bed brought in for no extra charge, but I feel the description was deceiving. The room furniture was outdated, but the rug and curtains appeared new. Although the room seemed clean there was a slight odor, but the bathroom was very clean. It was very noisy at night. Although I was not surprised on New Year's Eve that there were people outside in the parking lot screaming until 2 a.m., it happened the night before as well. The biggest downfall for the inn was that it was too far from the main street in Gatlinburg. After wondering around the main part of Gatlinburg, the half mile walk back to the motel was too far. Plus, there was no place to eat close by. We had already been walking most of the day and were walking down again that night for the New Year's fireworks, but needed dinner in between and didn't want to walk down and back again just to eat. The cafe was suppose to be open, but it wasn't. I went to the front desk to ask about a place to order pizza, the man started searching through his files just to find a phone number. It was like no one had ever asked him that before. Finally another man came up and gave us a coupon with a phone number on it so we could order delivery.

The room was comfortable, however, as all we did was use it for a place to sleep and shower. The resaurant was nice and the gal who workded it was friencly.

My stay with Sidney James Lodge was ok. I would recommend it to someone who just needs to use this hotel for a place to crash ... in night. Rooms were clean, however they have the worst restaurant onsite and the lady at the cafe is unbearable!!! However the hotel staff and reception people are versy courteous. I would give it a 5 on 10 scale.

Sapphire Mommie Oct 18, 2009
The stay was great even at this hotel. Price was too high for this type of hotel $81 per night. Location was great, close to ... everything but tucked in a quite location. Update pitures on the wall-I thought I saw mold on them. An iron and a microwave in the room would have been great. Although I did have a fridge that was unexpected and came in handy. I would stay at this hotel again for a lower price.

Use the trolley. I came right in front of the hotel and was only 50 cents. Parking your car in the downtown area is almost impossible and can be costly. Walking was great until the temp dropped and the rain came. Get a the room that backs up to the river- wonderful view.

It's a room, nothing special
L. Oct 17, 2009
The first room we were given reeked of cigarettes even though we had booked a non-smoking room. My husband requested a room ... change and we were given a non-smoking room quickly without a problem. Some rooms are across the street from the pool which is a little inconvenient when it is 50 degrees out. The room was dark, slightly musty and out dated though it did seem clean for the most part or from what I could see. I thought it was a bit tacky that the hotel had their name stamped on the sheets and pillow cases in an institutional fashion. It was about a 10-15 minute walk to the downtown area from the room. I wouldn't stay there again though I don't think I wound go to Gatlinberg again. It was a crowded over priced tacky tourist trap with little to offer. Every place you walk into costs a minimum of $10/person and every shop is a rip off though it was crowded so people must like it there it just wasn't for us. Also many places do not take Amex cards.

I liked the location, and my son loved the pool. The room was outdated, and the water temperature would change unexpectedly ... while taking a shower. And, the temperature of the water would get way too hot to be safe for children or anyone for that matter. The housekeeping didn't do a very good job of cleaning the room.

Calisto Sep 7, 2009
The hotel was right in the heart of Gatlinburg. It was great. We were in walking distance of the shops and the sights. The ... room was great, but there were mirrors everywhere and that was a little strange. The mirror right over the bed was a little off. Not my cup of tea. The two person hot tub was fantastic and very relaxing. All in all, I would recommend the hotel but I would make sure the person knew the rooms were a little outdated and that you should like your reflection a whole lot. Not good right after seeing a horror movie.

Manda Aug 11, 2009
The hotel location is not too bad, about a 10 - 15 min walk to downtown. There is a pancake house just down the street that ... has good food and friendly service. The staff at the hotel were vey friendly and helpful. We stayed in a single room with a queen bed. There wasn't alot of space in the room but overall wasn't too cramped. The bathroom and general appearance of the room is out dated, but was clean. Overall not a bad choice. Good for a couple looking for a weekend getaway and not planning on spending a lot of time at the resort.

There are 2 Lodges the courtside which we stayed at was little better than a hole in the wall with an air conditioner that ... worked only half the time and a pool that was big enough for two frogs. So be careful if you stay here and DO NOT STAY AT THE COURT SIDE. The location was great and because of that we tried to limit ourselves to only sleeping at the lodge.

Disappointed Jul 25, 2009
The hotel was within walking distance to downtown. I was extremely disappointed in the hotel for the money paid. The staff ... were not that friendly. The rooms were not clean. The coffee was not refilled in the room. One of the outside pools was very small and looked dirty. We did not spend anytime in the hotel due to the conditions.
