Disappointed
Chicago Vacationer Sep 22, 2009
As we walked into the hotel, we could tell it was nice. The entrance and lobby look wonderful. As we got into our rooms we ... were at first happy with our choice of hotel. Upon further inspection there were many little things that bothered us. There wasn't a fan in the bathroom. Above the shower there was rust/mold problem. The fridge was non functional and had old smelly water on the bottom of it. We needed a nice car for a day so we decided to leave it to concierge to obtain one for us. They told us that they only dealt with Hertz. In the end they were able to get us a Kia. That may be a "nice" car to some people, but I was specific in what I expected. Other than Chintaksu, the concierge did try to be helpful. The front desk however was generally employed with pompous bunch. I expect that they are used to business people wearing suits and not the vacationing couple that we were.

Really nice. The staff are great. Everything is catered for the customer. Example: The pool closes at 10pm, but they don't ... kick you out. Not really a big deal, but it's a symptom of their philosophy. Historic building. No wireless in rooms though.

Although you're close to nightlife and food, you need to take the bus or rent a car to get to some of the touristy things. The bus service is really good and costs $2. Electric buses too!

My daughter and I stayed 4 nights feeling like royalty. The concierge was helpful with directions, dinning suggestions and ... making travel arrangements. The Palace needs a lot of help.
Ron May 31, 2009
Tried to check in early with my handicapped father. They put us in a King Bed and mentioned they would be able to move to ... another room after 4. I kept calling inidicating the bed configuration was not acceptable. The were not able to change our room to two double beds. Requested a rollaway, but was told due to the fire hazard rules, none were available in our king bed room. Due to the over promise and underdelivery of our needed room type, I ended up sleeping (any paying for another room at the Westin)They were able to give us a double bed on our second night but with a slight attitude. We checked out the next day, and found out they double billed me for the 2 night room. For the past 10 years, My family and I have stay at the palace. We don't even look at other hotels. However after this trip, It's time to start checking out other Hotels for a smoother stay.

We were attending a private party at a local restaurant/bar around the corner from the palace. The two days we were there the spa staff was not present and we had to keep making phone calls for more towels. Also, confirmed that the pool and jaquzzi was working but on May 23rd, it was closed.

The staff was very friendly and helpful. The location is great especially if you want to be near union square and in the ... heart of the city. I have stayed at the palace before and enjoyed my stay very much. I highly recommend that if you are looking to stay in a luxurious hotel but still have the being at home comfort feel. Pick the palace. The pool is nice for swimming laps in the evening. The palace is a great place to unwind and relax. They have many accomodations to fit everyones need. The beds are extremely soft and comfortable. You almost feel like you melt right into them.

Adventure in Paradise
TeamPete Apr 22, 2009
We were greeted by a very friendly staff and were taken aback with how beautiful the hotel is. However, after a walk, we got ... back to our room to take a nap and the valence had fallen on the bed. It is a large box that weighs approx 40 lbs. We took pictures and showed the manager. He was very nice about changing our room, but never followed up with us or made sure that the rest of our stay was ok. It frightened us to think about what would have happened if we were in the bed when the valence had fallen. It was only being held up by two small screws. We don't think the appology was enough, but the rest of the stay was great.

Great Lobby...so so room. Cracked basin in Bathroom. Room needed re-painting. Comfortable king size bed..With down ... comforter. Lousy cellphone reception and you pay $20 for WI-FI access. Concierge nowhere to be found on most days. Great location for shopping and close to public transportation. Might have been top-notch in it's day... But present day more a business meeting destination.

Grand Old Property
Marc Nov 16, 2008
This is a very elegant old hotel. They have done a decent job of keeping it in beautiful condition. There were a few details ... that needed attention (i.e. broken light fixture in clothing cabinet and hot tub had been out of service for a while)but overall quite nice. The rooms are not as big as a more contemporary hotel, however still sufficient for two guests. Plenty of entertainment/dining nearby and easy walking to the cable car line if you want to take a trip to Fisherman's Wharf.
