Good hotel, bad service
steelers fan Oct 17, 2009
We stayed at this hotel for its location. As you can see from amenities, etc this is supposed to be a nice hotel. we arrived ... at the hotel around midnight. We had to wait 10 minutes even though there was no line at check in. then we were given a room key. When we opened the room's door, we were surprised to see that the room was still occupied. thankfully, the occupants were not in the room at the time. We went down and explained the situation. You would expect the staff to be apologetic and offer something to make up for their mistake but nothing... So it was a very disappointing start. Next room was good but they downgraded us from a king to a queen bed... If it were not for the location I would not recommend this place.

Maybe it was just bad timing!
Maureen says Sep 21, 2009
We planned our trip for the weekend prior to the G20 meeting in Pittsburgh, which we did not take in to consideration so some ... of the chaos that we experienced may have been bad timing on our part, but the Hotel was undergoing some lobby renovations and we got the impression this was being rushed to completion due to the upcoming events in the City. The check-in desk clerk did not ask me what type of bed I wanted and was on the whole rather unfriendly and did not make eye contact with me, she also sniffed and sneezed through the check in procedure, maybe she should have stayed home that day. The room was on the 4th floor and has a beautiful brick wall view from their large wall to wall windows! The bed was also a Queen bed for 2 people not a King size. I would hope I was not given a less than optimal room because I did not book directly with the hotel!Otherwise the room was spacious and clean and well equipped. Housekeeping were excellent as was room service personell and doormen, valet parking etc.

We had the most enjoyable weekend staying at this hotel. We were fortuate enough to get a room with a view of PNC Park and ... the river, spectacular. We walked to the Steeler game and also the casino, but could have taken a cab. The only negative was the lobby construction for remodeling, but these things happen. I highly recommend this hotel for anyone staying downtown. The theatres are around the corner.

Music and sports lovers rejoice!
catlady4 Aug 1, 2009
This is a great location for the music lover or sports fanatic. Heinz Hall is a block away to catch performances of the ... Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and Heinz Stadium and PNC park are within walking distance. You can also walk to Station Square but wear walking shoes since it is a good mile away. You can also call the front desk and they will arrange a taxi to pick you up. A couple of minor problems: Take a quick inventory of what you have in your mini-bar/fridge. They didn't stock the fridge fully before we got there and at check-out we had a larger bill then expected since they filled it up while we were sight-seeing one day (we stayed there 2 nights). They did take the charges off right away at the front desk. Housekeeping also took a long time to come clean our room. They didn't arrive till 3:30pm, which I thought was really late. Overall, the room was quiet and comfy. We had a room that had a perfect view of PNC Park. I loved the fact that we could walk to everywhere that we wanted to go, driving in downtown Pittsburgh is crazy during the week. We will definetely stay here again the next time we are in Pittsburgh for a concert or sporting event.

Nice hotel after a not so nice check-in
First time Pittsburgh travelers Jul 23, 2009
Overall we enjoyed our stay at the Renaissance. The hotel is located right across the bridge from PNC Park and many downtown ... attractions. Our main problem started at check-in. We had requested late check-in and arrived at the hotel after 10 pm. We were told at check in that they had "upgraded" our room. However, we got to our room to find only 1 bed for 2 adults and 2 kids-not the 2 queen beds we had requested. We returned to the front desk and were somewhat rudely told that The Renaissance and many hotels do not receive room "requests" from Orbitz or other travel websites. They also told us they had no rooms available with 2 beds. We showed the staff our confirmation from Orbitz and they responded that they did not show the 2 bed request in their computer. The computer did show our late check-in request, however. A male staff member called to see about getting a room at another Marriott and said they would pay for our cab ride. They told us maybe they would have a room with two beds for the next 2 nights. We were offered extra bedding as they had no more roll away beds either. We opted for the extra bedding option and headed back up to our room for the night. Again and again we were told by the 2 front desk staff people that this was a common problem. The next day we checked in with the front desk person we had dealt with the night before and were switched to a room with 2 beds for the remainder of our stay. Again the front desk was not so friendly about our situation. Other than our negative front desk experiences, our stay was nice. It is a quiet hotel and the restaurant was reasonable priced with good options especially for breakfast. We would definitely stay at the Renaissance again but would call the hotel directly to confirm our reservation.

Upscale, vintage hotel
Tiger Fan Jun 16, 2009
A great hotel. The location was perfect in regards to the baseball stadium. Staff was very nice and helpful. Just had to ... step out and walk across the bridge. Room was very clean and shower was good. I would have expected an HD TV in the room though. I also would have like to have a room with a view of the stadium / river. Breakfast was pricey, but many places are within walking distance. Also, don't expect to park at the hotel - you have to park a block or two away. No big deal, just would have liked to known that ahead of time.

Ups and downs
Frequent traveler Jun 4, 2009
The ups are the great location of the hotel and the beauty of the lobby and rooms. We could walk to most everything we wanted ... to see and do, and the river walks are just lovely. Lots of nice restaurants and bars are around. The room was comfy and inviting, and the bathroom was large and nicely appointed. The hotel is close to the football and baseball fields, which makes the area noisy and crowded if there is a game, which was OK with us. We were very satisfied with all this. We had a problem, however, with our reservation. We made the reservation two months beforehand, and when we got to the hotel, the staff said they couldn't find it. It took 30 minutes of phone calls with Orbitz to find out that our reservation was indeed confirmed, but the staff just couldn't seem to find it. It was very frustrating, but, fine, mistakes happen. However, our real frustration was with the staff's apparent lack of interest in helping us and welcoming us, even after it was clear the error was on their end. I felt like they were just hoping this cranky couple would go away. That started the trip off on a very bad foot, and it ended with another misstep. We got the bill when we were leaving, and it said we took stuff from the minibar. This was impossible, as we declined the minibar key when we were finally able to check in. The lady at the desk was most helpful in having this charge deleted, I must add. So the hotel itself is very nice, but we were definitely turned off by the apparent incompetence of the staff. I would not return to this hotel because of this. I wish other visitors better luck than we had.

I was one of 8 rooms for a family event. The staff was very helpful, especially with the family that kept kosher and had 2 ... small children. The bartender was very helpful, suggesting I change my order when I ordered a dish that others hadn't liked. The sheets were amazing. SOFT SOFT SOFT!! Several of us commented on them. While expensive, it is a great place to stay near local theaters, which is why we chose it. Many guests were there for the ... baseball which is a short walk across the bridge.
