Friendly and Comfortable Hotel!
AJ Oct 12, 2009
4.5 stars! For a boutique hotel, the Tudor's Deluxe Queen room with a balcony was very nice, dare I say exceptional. The ... bathroom was surprisingly large. My room on the 16th floor had a very large wrap around balcony complete with a table and (one) chair. One can sit out in the morning sun and have a cup of coffee or in the evening enjoy a moonlit night cap. The eastern and southern exposures on the balcony overlook the neighborhood, river and UN. The beds do seem to be more a full size than an actual queen, but still was very comfortable. If you are a walker and like to explore a city, the Tudor is a great place to call home. You are walking distance from the Theatre District, 15-20 minutes tops once you navigate through Time Square where it is very crowded. The Tudor is tucked away so it does not have the crazy crowds that you find in the Time Square area. The Tudor is also conveniently located to Grand Central Station. If you like to have a subway line right outside the door of your hotel, then the Tudor is not for you. You have to walk about a block and a half to the nearest metro station. Taxis are plentiful and again, if you are a walker and explorer it is perfect. As in most of the larger hotels in NY, many of the services are extra money. the WiFi hook up is extra in the room. HINT:if you go in the lobby, you can pick up a free connection. There is also a 24hr business center with 6 terminals and one printer that are an additional cost ( 35cents a min. $5 minimum and 20cents a prited page). Though I did not use the service, it was nice to see that they offered free toiletries that you may have forgotten to pack. there is also a gym, suana and massage room that I did not have the opportunity to explore. I did not eat at the restaurant, so I have no opinion. They have a concierge that I did not use as I already had my theatre tickets and other plans arranged prior to arriving. I did use the bell captain to store my luggage as I waited for my room to be ready ( I arrived at 9:30am and check in is at 3pm) and upon leaving so I could do a few more things before my flight which was later than check out. I did not ask for an exteded check out time. There are limited number of double bed rooms at this hotel, so if you are traveling with friends or children and don't want to share a bed, then you should make those requests early. Take the time to go to up the stairs on 42nd St. to the park that is just up the street towards 1st ave. I have stayed at the bigger, flashier hotels (Hilton, Hyatt and The W) as well as other boutiques (The Paramount, Affinia etc.) and I found my stay at the Tudor to be up there with one of my favorite stays in NYC. Note: I spent two nights and was very busy seeing plays non-stop. . .

We went to the "Top of the Rock" (Rockefeller center) for a great view of the city. You can get a $3 discount with AAA card off tickets at the ticket booth at Rockefeller Cntr. There is a lot to see there at the center. Fairly long walk (30 mins) or a short taxi ride.

We enjoyed our stay at the Tudor. Very clean room. Quiet location away from the real noisy part of the city, yet convenient ... to it. We walked to Time Square...approx 20 min walk. The staff provided great service. The hotel restaurant has a nice breakfast buffet or you can order from the menu, though high in price, the food and service were excellent. We only ate there at breakfast, once. There is a nice shaded park nearby, towards the river. There are several deli, markets, drug stores and diners nearby if you need anything. We walked down to the Borders Bookstore (open til 10pm) a few blocks south on 42nd, and had an icecream on the way back on the same street. You can catch the subway a few blocks up 2nd Ave. at the Grand Central, or the staff will get you a cab or give you directions. They were friendly and helpful. We went to Liberty and Ellis Islands & Rockefeller center this visit. This was our third trip to the city to see family, but a short visit. My favorite is St. Paul's Chapel across from the Twin Towers site has alot of interesting history of 911, and back to the 1700's...this visit we didn't get there until 7pm and it was closed.

My boyfriend and I took a quick trip into the city to see Wicked and visit a friend from school. The hotel was a easy walk to ... the theatre district but there was no friendly staff at the hotel at all. We tried to sit at the bar on a Tuesday evening at 10:15 in their lobby after the show to have a drink and chat about the show and were abruptly told that they were closed. The next morning, we slept in and went down to try and get breakfast at 10:25 and were told breakfast was closed. The info said serving til 10:30 from 7 AM. I certainly wouldn't stay there again.

MY wife and I arrived at the hotel 4 hours before check-in time and the manager graciously checked us in which allowed us a ... little time to explore the city before a scheduled Dinner cruise that evening. He gave use excellent directions via subway to places all over the city. On our way to the dinner cruise the bell-hop went above and beyond to secure us a taxi to the ship. The next morning the manager gave us an excellent tip for a New York style breakfast at a local diner and more excellent directions to some great shopping. An added bonus the hotel offered us was the convience of storing our luggage after check-out some we could have some more time shopping and exploring the city. That was very well appreciated. My thanks to a well run and friendly establishment.

The staff at the front desk was very friendly. When we walked into our room, however, the staff had not finished making up ... the bed. Our neighbors sounded like a number of families with children who enjoyed hanging out in the hallway, slamming doors, and making noise. I would think you would group different types of guests in different areas of the hotel. The room seemed very small and not worth the price I paid.

Public transportation within the city is relatively inexpensive, convenient and efficient, particularly since the implementation of the MetroCard system. The present fare for a subway or bus ride is $2.00. Riders may purchase a MetroCard at subway booths and self-serve kiosks that can be used interchangeably on both subways and buses. Take advantage of the unlimited ride MetroCards a one-day Fun Pass costs $7.50, while a seven-day one is $25.00. More than one person (up to 4) can use a standard Metrocard at once, (not the day/weekly pass). One person holding the card can just swipe 4 times and then four people can pass through. Additional information on the cards and public transportation in general can be found at the Metropolitan Transit Authority's website http://www.mta.info/.

a Gem!

This hotel is a gem. I love the location and I encourage future patrons to take a stroll down 1st avenue. Just go towards 1st ... avenue and take a left. I did -- and discovered some great restaurants/ cafees and bars. Just fabulous! The staff at the hotel was friendly and efficient. The lobby feels upscale and sleek. And I loved the historical photos on the walls which offered a glimpse to the way NYC streets looked in the past. Very neat! The only thing I would have truly enjoyed -- is a view out of my hotel window. Ours faced a brick wall...which was a little depressing. But it encouraged me to just walk out and enjoy New York on foot. Rather than stare out of my window. Overall, I would definitely return to this hotel on my next trip to the city. I would just request a room with a view :)

Front Desk not very accomodating. We did not have a bottle opener and they charge $3.75 just to use the opener! We plainly stated that we did not want to keep it.
