No coffee makers in the room. The hotel did not put out coffee until 6 am. Although it was out early for the marathon, it was ... unavailable other mornings. Only two front desk people were nice, the rest were rude. Cleaning people were awesome and friendly. The hotel is clean, rooms are a nice size for San Fran, and it had in room heat and air conditioning. Great location if you love to shop.

A great hotel in Union Square
Teachers on a getaway Oct 19, 2009
I really liked this hotel. Loved the decor and it looked just like the picture from the Website. Our room was was quite ... spacious for a San Francisco hotel room. The best thing about this hotel is the location. My friend and I wanted to see Wicked and shop. We were able to walk to the theater and Union Square is a short block away. Everything you need is within a block of the hotel. The down side is that there were fewer amenities than I am used to at the rate we paid. For example one bar of soap and very limited in room dining. Plus we had to park the car ourselves- the first time I've ever done that at a SF hotel. I know that's really petty but it's the small details that make a hotel stay memorable and satisfying. This is probably the best SF hotel you're going to get at this level.

Great Location!
Steph Oct 13, 2009
I will say that I received excellent service, everyone was very, very nice. When I first arrived, I walked into my room and ... was hit with a very strong odor of "wet dog" (the hotel advertises being pet friendly). I immediately called downstairs and they exchanged my room within minutes, with no questions asked. The hotel itself is pretty old, probably built shortly after the reconstruction of the city after the fire in the 1900s. Thus, there was a bit of a musty odor to the room in general, especially in the bathroom. The room was clean, but I would not say spotless. It was very, very quiet, the only noise I heard was doors closing, not a single voice through a wall. The decor of the rooms was really neat, sort of a modern trendy with antiques thrown in. There were very few channels to watch on the TV, and the pay per view was SUPER expensive, so I didn't bother. Room service is SUPER expensive as well, lots of fees and gratuities required. There was no coffee pot in the room, either. For the price, I think overall I was expecting more luxury. I have since found out through family that live in the San Fran metro area, that they suspect prices were hiked up due to it being "Fleet Week", which had started the day I arrived. They were quite surprised when I told them how much I had spent.

1. When reserving a room in this hotel, be aware of any special events in town...they hike up their prices! 2. Ask for the shuttle to the airport instead of a cab or limo, it's only $15 one way, and they were great!

Wouldn't go Back
SF Native Aug 3, 2009
The room was tiny, you could barley walk around the bed. The room smelled like paint, so strong they probably shouldn't have ... put a guest in it because of the fumes. Our room was next to the elevator and you could hear it all day & night non-stop. It was just kind of gross a little, the pictures make it look a lot nicer than it really is. We were going to shop and see the city as I grew up there and my boyfriend had never been. I was disappointed, especially for the price. It just wasn't nice, they were trying, but it was gross.

The rooms were pretty cool & hip. The location was awesome. So close to everything that you need within a block. I became ... really irritated with the nose. You can hear everything at this hotel. I also ran into a problem with a random stranger knocking on my door several times. The lady at the front desk was not much help at all. She said there was nothing she could so about it. But after a bit of complaining i got a hold of a manager and the problem was finally resolved.

Nice hotel, strange neighborhood
Trade show attendee May 11, 2009
Hotel Frank is tucked in a busy, odd part of SF. It's less than two blocks to Union Square, 1 block from ACT Theatre, and ... close to Market street. The staff are helpful and professional, rooms are clean and new. Just be prepared for the neighborhood. No free parking is available, and runs around $35 a day. You also will see all types walking the street. It's not scary as much as strange and sad.

The Review you want to read.
Ms. Diva May 11, 2009
This is the review you'll want to read before booking at any hotel. I am 20 years old who is what people could say ... "diva/spoiled". But I just have high expectations especially when I am going on vacation and am willing to put down any amount of money for a memorable trip. I went to San Francisco with my cousin/best friend, we vacation a lot, spend a lot and expected to treated fairly. Hotel Frank has one of the best Bell Men's you could possibly ask for, his name is [...]. He's an older gentlemen could possibly be my grandpa but has a soul of a young man at heart. He greeted us at the door, took our luggage and asked us right away what we were here for and what we wanted to do. Like I said, I spend of a lot of money & I wanted my trip to be memorable. [...]made it happen. We went on one of those double decker buses and it was AMAZING, it was the funniest 3 1/2hr ride of my life there. If you get lucky, you'll be on a buss full of older people who don't mind if you are giggling with your best friend and snapping pictures whenever you feel like it. We went to the fishermen's dwarf, it was "ok" not much to do once you finished eating street food & shopping at the little gift shops. About the hotel: The bathroom sink is outside of the bathroom, which sucked because it was inconvenient to walk out of the bathroom than wash your hands. There is only one mirror and no body mirror if you are traveling with girlfriends expect to share the mirror or take turns getting ready in the morning. Some of the front desk agents, did not talk to us while waiting in the lobby, and all the other bell men EXCEPT for Jack were rude to us as well. Now another reason why I noticed all of these things is because I have a degree in Travel & Hospitality, I interned at the Crowne Plaza - River Front in St. Paul, MN for 2 months so I know how a hotel works. But like I said, Jack made things happen, when things did go right like, when we booked the Bay Cruise thru the hotel and the bus never came and got us and the bell men or the front desk agent on shift did not do anything to try to make us happy when [...] came into work at 3pm and we walked in with our 20 different shopping bags, [...] made sure we got our refund and tried to make things right. The hotel is in the BEST LOCATION, it is not even a block away from stores. All the best designer stores you could ever imagine was only a block or two away from your hotel room, I was in shopping heaven! The Cable Cars is only two blocks away from the hotel, it takes you to the end of Union Square to the end of the Bay, great way to go back and forth (smart move to buy a all day pass if you plan on taking it back and forth for the day) if you dont want to walk down two blocks to the cable car you can walk a block up and wait for one to come pick you up they run by every 15 minutes. China town is only about 3 blocks away its nice and big but I have to say there is no China Town better than NYC's China town. If you manage/make it to the end of China town you will find yourself in Little Italy, full of nothing but great restauarnts. Overall the hotel was nice, if you don't plan on being there until night time (like us) you will enjoy the stay there because your room is cleaned every day and they there are so many options to choose from if you want to really explore San Francisco.

We enjoyed our stay at the Hotel Frank (Maxwell Hotel) very much. My granddaughter and I were there to look at the Academy ... of Art University, downtown S.F. My son (her dad) flew in to join us and had a beautifully decorated, larger room with a very nice view. Our room was small but very clean and newly decorated. The beds and pillows were wonderful. The location of the hotel was fantastic, right in the middle of the city with easy access to everything. The Staff was very helpful and friendly. The hotel is still in the process of remodeling but when they are finished, it will be a first class small hotel. I look forward to staying there again. We enjoyed our short stay there very much.

Happy Traveler Mar 3, 2009
We booked a room here over President's Day/Valentine's Day weekend. I had been a little nervous about the room what with the ... renovations and all, but it was fantastic! The decor was hip and modern in our junior suite, which was a good size room, with a big TV, closet, and comfy bed. We were on the ninth floor away from the street, so noise was not an issue. We saw some of the renovations on the lower floors, but it did not impact our stay. The location of the hotel is great! Just a few blocks from the Powell St. station, shopping, restaurants on every corner, and there is a great little dueling piano bar only a block away (next to the Irish bar...not sure of the name.) The hotel staff was friendly, and they held our bags all day for us while we wandered the city before our return flight. I would stay at this hotel again, and would also recommend it to other travelers.

My review of Maxwell Hotel
James Dec 7, 2008
On arrival with a group of friends, the hotel staff greeted us with smiles. We were checked in very quickly, and our rooms ... were ready before check in time. I asked if upgrades were available, and the front desk clerk put us in a wonderful room with a view of the city. No extra charge! The room was very comfortable, clean and quiet. The linens were lovely and very nice quality. The small lobby is reminiscent of a European hotel, and was festive and cheery. We were always greeted with a smile and the staff were very pleasant. A great find and very reasonable in the heart of the city.
