Enjoyable stay in the heart of the loop
green3q Dec 6, 2009
The room itself was of about average size, but with unusually tall ceilings (well over 12 ft). No view to speak of, but one ... doesn't stay right by Millenium park and the east side of the loop to stay in a hotel room. Of note, the L was barely audible and the room pleasantly quiet for sleeping.

[...] saved the day
Family Traveler Nov 25, 2009
[...]. So after a restless night, the next morning I again attempted to get an explanation as to why the room I received was ... of a lesser type than that which I reserved (and already paid for). This time, thanks to [...] who was working most mornings/days that we were there got us into a great room across from our other party. It was so easy and completely opposite of my experience the night before with the other desk employee. I wish I had gotten his name and brought attention to him to the hotel manager (maybe that was [...].) But after having the problem so easily fixed I didn't worry about it. So, the hotel turned out to be absolutely fantastic. The rooms were clean, quiet, spacious, and very comfortable.

total bargain
family traveler Nov 22, 2009
I took my 4 & 6 year olds to see the Holiday Light Parade on Michigan Avenue on Saturday, the 21st of November. After ... deciding to do this on Friday, I checked hotel prices on a whim- we live in the suburbs, and I thought it would be easier to stay overnight downtown after the fireworks. With tax & fees, the price was $135- the location was incredibly easy to get to from the whole Michigan Ave. hooplah. Since we'd come downtown early in the day, we were able to use the room to rest after our daytime fun, before the evening parade. The room was pretty big, with 2 double beds and a huge, very clean bathroom. I'd read that some people had el noise, but our room was internal and quiet. For a clean, quiet, very comfortable place to stay, it was awesome. Highly recommended!

Not Pleased at All
Schmick79 Nov 13, 2009
The first thing I didn't like about the hotel was that the elevated train outside was right by my window. So every 10-15 ... minutes..well..you get the idea. I don't think switching to the other side of the hall would have helped much. The TV was an old Magnavox 27" and the cable had very few channels and some looked like the old days of using rabbit ears. No WiFi was a huge disappointment and even when plugged in, it was extremely slow. The only thing I did like about the hotel was that the bathroom was nice, clean and had great water pressure.

The Silversmith- a wonderful experience!
Garnet92 Nov 11, 2009
The Silversmith Hotel is beautifully preserved and restored, earning them a spot on the National Historic Register. The hotel ... is located in the heart of Jeweler's Row in The Loop, just steps from the 'L'. Michigan Avenue and Millennium Park are a block away. We stayed in a roomy one-bedroom suite, with a king bed, 2 closets, a separate sitting area and a good-sized bathroom. Our room was on the 5th floor and although the room faced the train side, the noise was minimal thanks to thick double windows. The staff at the Silversmith is especially friendly and accommodating. They always had a smile for us and made great recommendations on eateries and entertainment. The Silversmith played a big part in making my first trip to Chicago unforgettable. I would most definitely stay at the Silversmith again!

This hotel rocks! It was in a great location just a couple of blocks from Millennium Park and the Art Institute. It was an ... upscale hotel with an affordable price. Some of the staff (front desk) was stuck up but the other staff (bell boys) were nice. I defiantly recommend this hotel if you want to stay in a good location, with first class service, and an affordable price.

Great location, bad room
Minnegal Sep 14, 2009
The staff who greet you are very friendly, the location is awesome! But I booked a room with two double beds and the hotel ... oversold, so I got a queen bed. Something that made my stay uncomfortable with the person I was with. My other friends got upgraded to a suite but the woman who helped me was really rude since I "booked through a third party". My room was dark, looked directly over the alley into a brick wall. I didn't hear the L, but if i had I suppose I'd never stay here again. Next time I will stay with them, but make a bigger deal about the awful room I was stuck with. Really can't beat the location though!

Driver Sep 14, 2009
We were in for a family wedding and wanted to sight see in Chicago. The hotel was a little hard to find but it was in a good ... location so that we could walk everywhere. Unfortunately it was about a third of the cost extra to valet park with the hotel after paying for the room. Either that or drive aimlessly around Chicago looking for a parking garage. The room was tiny for 4 people. We could barely walk passed each other when going across the room. The bathroom was a nice size. Everything was very clean and the staff was really friendly but for we were expecting something better than just a good location.

EB Sep 8, 2009
The location is perfect. Easy walking and train access to everything. Trains right outside the hotel. The room was amazing ... as was the rest of the hotel. It has a very classic/vintage chicago feel to it. The only thing I would change (and this is certainly not a reason to make me not come back here) is that the lighting in the rooms is pretty dim unless you turn on most of the lamps; but honestly, if you are spending enough time inside your hotel room to where lighting is a real issue, you might as well not be in Chicago. I will definitely stay here again

blr Aug 22, 2009
We went to Chicago to do some sight-seeing and explore the city. The Silversmith was a great location, minutes from Millenium ... park/Michigan Ave, and the room we had was spacious. We only had one problem with one of the receptionists who was not very nice/helpful and our room was not cleaned the second day of our stay. Other than that no problems. We enjoyed Chicago very much, the best restaurants are on the Northern end of the city, and the bar on the 95th floor of the Hancock building is a must.

The pizza places such as Giordano's and Uno's make you order your pizza when you walk in so it's about ready by the time you're seated at a table. If you want to avoid a long wait, go early. If you go after 7:30 be prepared to wait up to an hour for a table. From what I saw take out was also available. These are both walking distance from most of the major hotels downtown.
