a gem on Jeweler's row
Art and Opera Lover Jan 31, 2010
I had a great time while staying here, attending two performances at the Lyric Opera and visiting the Art Institute. My room ... was very comfortable - a comfy bed with plenty of soft pillows. I especially liked the light from the almost floor-to-ceiling windows (light-blocking draperies for restful sleep) and the granite bathroom. I missed in-room coffee, but Starbuck's is very close.

Very easy to get to and from Midway Airport! The Orange Line is within steps of this lovely, quiet hotel. Located one short block from State and Madison, countless shopping, dining, and theatre opportunities are a brief stroll away -- the Art Institute and Lyric Opera well within walking distance.

Wonderful hotel. Historical building, spotless rooms, friendly staff. The location couldn't be better. Right in the middle of ... the Loop, near lots of food, bars, the train. Nice and quiet inside, but step out of the building and you're in the heart of the city. Felt very secure and safe. The lobby is very peaceful with a nice fireplace and piano. Loved every minute of being there. It was an excellent value.

The location was perfect with the "El" train station right out front. We were on the 9th floor and you do hear the trains go ... by but then again it is an experience of the city that makes it unique. The front desk personnel and concierre were superior. They were friendly, polite, helpful and caring. I would definately stay at that hotel again.

I liked the quality. Everything looked renovated and clean. It's an old-fashioned hotel with high ceiling and big wooden ... furniture. The location is just great! There was some noise because of the metro going just outside of the building (and at night time too). But it was not that bad. Overall experience is good! I would recommend this hotel to my friends.

Location and service seal the deal
Awfly Wee Eli Dec 23, 2009
The Silversmith is a lovely historic hotel, classy but not pretentious. The staff is wonderfully friendly and helpful, ... especially the bellmen. Rooms are large, clean, and tastefully decorated. If you're on the El side of the building, you get a roaring wind sound every time the train passes, but you get used to it. The attached restaurant, Ada's, is only so-so, but it's the Loop; plenty of other options are in easy walking distance. There's only wired internet in the rooms, and the WiFi in the lobby is weak, but the 24-hour business center has internet if you need to look something up. Fitness room is small; get your exercise by walking this amazing city; Silversmith is convenient to Millennium Park, the Art Institute, and the Museum Campus. Add the close El station, and there's really nowhere you can't get from here.

This hotel is at a very good location, very close to Millennium Park and The Magnificent Mile. Easy to get to either by car ... or train/metro. Staff was very friendly. The room was great (good climate control system), the bed good. Only thing is that you can hear the metro going by sometimes, but that was not bothering us.

The room itself was of about average size, but with unusually tall ceilings (well over 12 ft). No view to speak of, but one ... doesn't stay right by Millenium park and the east side of the loop to stay in a hotel room. Of note, the L was barely audible and the room pleasantly quiet for sleeping.

[...] saved the day
Family Traveler Nov 25, 2009
[...]. So after a restless night, the next morning I again attempted to get an explanation as to why the room I received was ... of a lesser type than that which I reserved (and already paid for). This time, thanks to [...] who was working most mornings/days that we were there got us into a great room across from our other party. It was so easy and completely opposite of my experience the night before with the other desk employee. I wish I had gotten his name and brought attention to him to the hotel manager (maybe that was [...].) But after having the problem so easily fixed I didn't worry about it. So, the hotel turned out to be absolutely fantastic. The rooms were clean, quiet, spacious, and very comfortable.

The pizza places such as Giordano's and Uno's make you order your pizza when you walk in so it's about ready by the time you're seated at a table. If you want to avoid a long wait, go early. If you go after 7:30 be prepared to wait up to an hour for a table. From what I saw take out was also available. These are both walking distance from most of the major hotels downtown.
